Recently, leptin emerged as a pleiotropic cytokine. It plays a substantial role in a wide spectrum of other functions including immune regulation, bone formation and fertility. Leptin signalling is under tight control. Aberrations of this stringent control system may be implicated in a variety of pathologies. Here, we review the various mechanisms that control cellular leptin receptor signalling.
