First, a sub-synchronous oscillation model for virtual synchronous generator (VSG)-based energy storage in grid-connected energy storage systems is established using the equivalent energy model. Based on sub-synchronous modal energy, energy functions for each component of the VSG-based energy storage system are derived. Building on this, a sub-synchronous oscillation disturbance localization method based on energy function modes is proposed. By monitoring the trends in energy function changes across different control stages, the role of each control stage in sub-synchronous oscillations can be determined, and the disturbance source can be localized. Furthermore, the oscillation localization analysis method proposed in this paper enables the assessment of the oscillation participation of each equipment stage during sub-synchronous oscillations and the identification of critical stages. Finally, the proposed method is validated through scenarios involving disturbance sources in control loops of different grid configurations, and the simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.
