Dynamical Newton-Like Methods with Adaptive Stepsize for Solving Nonlinear Algebraic Equations

    Cheng-Yu Ku1,2,3, Weichung Yeih1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 173-200, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.173

Abstract In this paper, a dynamical Newton-like method with the adaptive stepsize based on the construction of a scalar homotopy function to transform a vector function of non-linear algebraic equations (NAEs) into a time-dependent scalar function by introducing a fictitious time-like variable is proposed. With the introduction of the fictitious time-like function, we derived the adaptive stepsize using the dynamics of the residual vector. Based on the proposed dynamical Newton-like method, we can also derive the dynamical Newton method (DNM) and the dynamical Jacobian-inverse free method (DJIFM) with the transformation matrix as the inverse of the… More >

Waste Tire Rubberized Concrete Plates for Airport Pavements: Stress and Strain Profiles in Time and Space Domains

    E. Ferretti1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.31, No.2, pp. 87-112, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.031.087

Abstract The present study follows a previous study on the stress and strain profiles along the cross-section of waste tire rubberized concrete plates for airport pavements, subjected to quasi-static loads [Ferretti and Bignozzi (2012)]. Further results on the in-situ performance of concrete plain and rubberized taxiways have been collected and presented here. The experimental program has been undertaken at the Guglielmo Marconi airport of Bologna (Italy). It concerns two portions of the taxiway, one built with plain concrete and one with rubberized concrete. Each portion has been fitted with strain gauges embedded in concrete for the More >

Shape-Effect in the Effective Laws of Plain and Rubberized Concrete

    E. Ferretti

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 237-284, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.030.237

Abstract The procedure of the effective law outlined in this paper [Ferretti (2001); Ferretti and Di Leo (2003); Ferretti (2004b)] is an experimental procedure for identifying the constitutive law in uniaxial compression of brittle heterogeneous materials, and is based on the physical, analytical and numerical discussions about the existence or otherwise of strain-softening [Ferretti (2004a); Ferretti (2005)]. This procedure allows us to correct several incongruities that characterize the average stress versus average strain diagrams: it produces evidence against strain-softening in uniaxial compression [Ferretti (2004b)], whose existence may be questioned from a physical point of view [Ferretti… More >

Dispersion of Axisymmetric Longtudinal Waves in a Pre-Strained Imperfectly Bonded Bi-Layered Hollow Cylinder

    S. D. Akbarov1,2, C. Ipek3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.30, No.2, pp. 99-144, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.030.099

Abstract This paper studies the dispersion of the axisymmetric longitudinal wave propagation in the pre-strained hollow cylinder consisting of two-layers under the shear-spring type imperfectness of the contact conditions between these layers. The investigations are made within the framework of the piecewise homogeneous body model by utilizing the 3D linearized theory of elastic waves in elastic bodies with initial stresses. It is assumed that the layers of the cylinder are made from compressible hyper-elastic materials and their elasticity relations are given through the harmonic potential. The degree of the mentioned imperfectness is estimated by the shear-spring More >

On the Some Particularities of the Torsional Wave Dispersion in a Finitely Pre-Deformed Hollow Sandwich Cylinder

    Surkay D. Akbarov1,2, Tamer Kepceler1, M. Mert Egilmez1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 83-98, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.030.083

Abstract This paper develops the investigations started in a work by Akbarov, Kepceler and Mert Egilmez (2011) and studies the some particularities of the torsional wave dispersion in a finitely pre-deformed sandwich hollow cylinder. The mentioned particularities relate to the influence of the stiffness ratio of the core and face layers' materials and the influence of the thickness ratio of these layers on the dispersion character of the wave under consideration. Moreover, the mentioned influences are studied for the various values of the parameter which characterizes the initial strains in the cylinder's layers. The mechanical relations More >

Domain-Decomposition Singular Boundary Method for Stress Analysis in Multi-Layered Elastic Materials

    Yan Gu1, Wen Chen1,2, Xiao-Qiao He3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 129-154, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.029.129

Abstract This paper applies an improved singular boundary method (SBM) in conjunction with domain decomposition technique to stress analysis of layered elastic materials. For problems under consideration, the interface continuity conditions are approximated in the same manner as the boundary conditions. The multi-layered coating system is decomposed into multiple subdomains in terms of each layer, in which the solution is approximated separately by the SBM representation. The singular boundary method is a recent meshless boundary collocation method, in which the origin intensity factor plays a key role for its accuracy and efficiency. This study also introduces More >

Local Buckling Delamination of a Rectangular Sandwich Plate Containing Interface Embedded Rectangular Cracks and Made From Elastic and Viscoelastic Materials

    S.D. Akbarov1,2, N. Yahnioglu1, A. Tekin1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 41-74, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.029.041

Abstract A three-dimensional buckling delamination problem for a rectangular sandwich plate made from elastic and viscoelastic materials is studied. It is supposed that the plate contains interface embedded rectangular cracks and that the edge-surfaces of these cracks have initial infinitesimal imperfections. The evolution of these initial imperfections with an external bi-axial compressed force (for the case where the materials of the layers of the plate are elastic) or with duration of time (for the case where the materials of the layers of the plate are viscoelastic) is investigated. The corresponding boundary value problem is formulated within… More >

    J. Zidek1,2, J. Kucera1, J. Jancar1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.28, No.3, pp. 213-230, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.028.213

Abstract The paper presents a combination of worm-like chain numerical models and one with a finite set of nano-particles. The primary objective of the models was to analyze the distribution of space in a system filled by particles. Information on the distribution of space was compared to properties of chains inside the set of particles. The set of nanoparticles was constructed with a tool generating a finite set of particles that is randomly distributed in a given space. The particles have a prescribed volume fraction and uniform size. First, the proportions of chains and particles were… More >

Maximization of Fundamental Frequencies of Axially Compressed Laminated Curved Panels against Fiber Orientation

    Hsuan-Teh Hu1, Jun-Ming Chen2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.28, No.3, pp. 181-212, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.028.181

Abstract Free vibration analyses of laminated curved panels subjected to axial compressive forces are carried out by employing the Abaqus finite element program. The fundamental frequencies of these composite laminated curved panels with a given material system are then maximized with respect to fiber orientations by using the golden section method. Through a parametric study, the significant influences of the end conditions, the panel aspect ratio, the panel curvature and the compressive force on the maximum fundamental frequencies and the associated optimal fiber orientations are demonstrated and discussed. A New Interval Comparison Relation and Application in Interval Number Programming for Uncertain Problems

    C. Jiang1,2, X. Han1, D. Li3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 275-304, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.027.275

Abstract For optimization or decision-making problems with interval uncertainty, the interval comparison relation plays a very important role, as only based on it a better or best decision can be determined. In this paper, a new kind of interval comparison relation termed as reliability-based possibility degree of interval is proposed to give quantitative evaluations on "how much better" of one interval than another, which is more suitable for engineering reliability analysis and numerical computation than the existing relations. In the new relation, the range of the comparing values is extended into the whole real number field, and the precise comparison More >
