Nívea Maria de Freitas1, Ana Vitória Imbronito1, Adriana Costa Neves2, Fábio Daumas Nunes3, Francisco Emilio Pustiglioni1, Roberto Fraga Moreira Lotufo1

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 142-147, 2007, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2007.0100

Abstract Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP) comprises a group of periodontal diseases character-ized by the rapid destruction of periodontal tissues which affect young individuals who generally present no systemic disorders. Polymorphisms in the interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) genes have been associated with an increased severity of chronic periodontitis. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the association between IL-1A (-889) and TNFA (-308) gene polymorphisms and GAP. One hundred nonsmoking subjects were selected, including 30 with GAP and 70 without periodontal disease. Gene polymor-phisms were analyzed by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment… More >

Non-interventional management of obstructive acute renal-failure in hormone-naïve prostate cancer

Mayank Mohan Agarwal, Shrawan K. Singh, Naveen C. Acharya, Uttam K. Mete, Arup K. Mandal

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.14, No.3, pp. 3580-3582, 2007

Abstract Advanced carcinoma prostate (CaP) commonly presents as bilateral ureteric obstruction. The management often requires androgen ablation along with temporary urinary diversion (percutaneous nephrostomy or ureteric catheterization) which is not infrequently associated with complications. Two patients of hormone-naïve CaP presented to our emergency department with oliguric renal failure due to bilateral ureteric obstruction and were treated with dialysis, ketoconazole (for androgen ablation) and corticosteroids; urinary diversion was not feasible in either at the time of presentation. Brisk diuresis occurred within 48 hours obviating the need of urinary diversion. Follow-up of these cases is presented and justification More >

Decrease of intestinal tumors induced by 1,2-dimethylhydrazine in rats fed with cow milk and buffalo milk

    M. Sánchez Negrette, M.A. Montenegro, M.S. Catuogno, W.J. Lértora, M.C. Guanziroli

    BIOCELL, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 391-396, 2007, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2007.31.391

Abstract Epidemiological studies in human beings and experimental studies in laboratory animals suggest that milk and dairy products can inhibit effects on the development of some kinds of tumors. Cow milk contains sphingomyelin, butyric acid, conjugated linoleic acid, calcium, vitamin A, carotene and vitamin D. All of these components are known to inhibit the process of carcinogenesis. Our objective was to determine the effect of cow milk and water buffalo milk on the development of colon neoplasias in an experimental model of carcinogenesis in rats induced with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH). Three-month-old Wistar male rats with an average… More >

Cased Hole Flexural Modes in Anisotropic Formations

    Ping’en Li1, Xianyue Su1,2, Youquan Yin1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 93-102, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.006.093

Abstract Based on the perturbation method, for flexural wave in cased hole in anisotropic formation, the alteration in the phase velocity caused by the differences in elastic constants between anisotropic formation of interest and a reference, or unperturbed isotropic formation is obtained. Assuming the cased hole is well bonded, the Thomson-Haskell transfer matrix method is applied to calculate the dispersion relation of flexural wave in cased hole in unperturbed isotropic formation. Both the cases of a fast and slow formation are considered where the symmetry axis of a transversely isotropic (TI) formation makes an angle with… More >

Resistin overexpression impaired glucose tolerance in hepatocytes

Lei Zhou, Yixing Li, Tao Xia, Shengqiu Feng, Xiaodong Chen, Zaiqing Yang

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 189-195, 2006, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2006.0039

Abstract Resistin is a 12.5-kDa cysteine-rich protein secreted from adipose tissue and is an important factorlinking obesity with insulin resistance. Here, we investigated the effect of resistin on glucose tolerance in adulthuman hepatocytes (L-02 cells). In this study, resistin cDNA was transfected into L-02 cells, and glucoseconcentration and glucokinase activity were determined subsequently. The data indicated resistin impaired,insulin-stimulated glucose utilization, which implied liver was a target tissue of resistin. To understand itsmolecular mechanism, mRNA levels of key genes in glucose metabolism and insulin signaling pathway wereanalyzed. The results demonstrated resistin-stimulated expression of glucose-6-phosphatase (G6Pase), sterolregulatory element-binding More >

Abstract Pinus maximartinezii (Rzedowski) is an endemic endangered species, confined to a single population of approximately 2000 to 2500 mature trees. It covers about 400 ha in southern Zacatecas, Mexico. The success of tissue culture techniques for germplasm preservation depends on regeneration of cultures. The objective of this study was to achieve an in vitro proliferation protocol using organogenesis technique for Pinus maximartinezii. Mature seeds were surface sterilized in 6% H2O2 v/v. Isolated cotyledons and zygotic embryos were cultured on shoot induction media. DCR and GD media were supplemented with 0.3 and 0.5 mgl-1 BAP; 0.01 mgl-1 ANA and More >
