    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.75, pp. 109-113, 2006, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2006.75.109

Abstract Pinus maximartinezii (Rzedowski) is an endemic endangered species, confined to a single population of approximately 2000 to 2500 mature trees. It covers about 400 ha in southern Zacatecas, Mexico. The success of tissue culture techniques for germplasm preservation depends on regeneration of cultures. The objective of this study was to achieve an in vitro proliferation protocol using organogenesis technique for Pinus maximartinezii. Mature seeds were surface sterilized in 6% H2O2 v/v. Isolated cotyledons and zygotic embryos were cultured on shoot induction media. DCR and GD media were supplemented with 0.3 and 0.5 mgl-1 BAP; 0.01 mgl-1 ANA and More >

4-Hydroxy-oxyphenbutazone is a potent inhibitor of cytokine production

Anja Ten Brinke, David W. C. Dekkers, Silla M. Notten, Miriam L. Karsten, Els R. de Groot, Lucien A. Aarden

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 144-151, 2005

Abstract 4-hydroxy-oxyphenbutazone (4OH-OPB), is currently in phase II trials for its immunosuppressive effect in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. 4OH-OPB and other compounds related to phenylbutazone were tested for their effect on in vitro cytokine production by monocytes and lymphocytes present in peripheral mononuclear cells (PBMC) or whole blood (WB) cultures, and compared against phenylbutazone and oxyphenbutazone, two known anti-inflammatory drugs. In PBMC cultures, 4OH-OPB was by far the most potent inhibitor, and both monokines and Th1 and Th2 lymphokines were efficiently inhibited at low concentrations. In WB cultures, 4OH-OPB was less effective than in PBMC cultures,… More >

Anti-retroviral therapy in HIV-infected patients: in vitro effects of AZT and saquinavir on the response of CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes to interleukin-7

    Stéphanie Beq1, Florence Bugault1, Jean-Hervé Colle1, Olivier Lambotte2, Jean-François Delfraissy2, Jacques Thèze1

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.16, No.4, pp. 293-299, 2005

Abstract IL-7 is a crucial cytokine regulating lymphopoiesis and peripheral T lymphocyte homeostasis. Plasma IL-7 levels increase during HIV infection and, although antiretroviral therapy (ARV therapy) decreases these levels, they fail to return to normal. Immune reconstitution in most ARV-treated patients is only partial. We tested the possibility that the IL-7R system might be affected by ARV drugs. The effects of the antireverse transcriptase AZT and the anti-protease saquinavir on CD3- and CD3+CD28-induced T lymphocyte stimulation, in the presence (or absence) of IL-7, were studied in vitro. Small amounts of the drugs did not interfere with… More >

Case report: azotemia secondary to bilateral ureteral kinking from ureteral stents placed at the time of bladder exstrophy closure

Saleh Binsaleh, Roman Jednak, Joao Luiz Pippi-Salle

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, No.3, pp. 2724-2725, 2005

Abstract We report the case of a neonate who underwent bladder exstrophy repair on the second day of life. Bilateral ureteral stents were placed intraoperatively. Postoperatively azotemia developed secondary to kinking of the proximal ureter bilaterally. Issues in diagnosis and management are discussed. More >

An economic evaluation of doxazosin, finasteride and combination therapy in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

    Heather McDonald1, Margaret Hux1, Marc Brisson2, Lisa Bernard1, J. Curtis Nickel3

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 2327-2340, 2004

Abstract Objective: The Proscar Long-Term Efficacy and Safety Study (PLESS) and the Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) study provide new evidence regarding the benefits of finasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The objective of this study was to utilize data from the PLESS and MTOPS studies to assess the cost-utility of finasteride and finasteride in combination with doxazosin, compared to doxazosin alone in men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms.
Methods: A semi-Markov decision analytic model was constructed to estimate the clinical consequences, costs and cost-utility of doxazosin, finasteride, and combination therapy. Analyses were… More >

Influence of genotype and explant source on indirect organogenesis by in vitro culture of leaves of Melia azedarach L.

    S.K. VILA*, H.Y. REY, L.A. MROGINSKI

    BIOCELL, Vol.28, No.1, pp. 35-41, 2004, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2004.28.035

Abstract In vitro regeneration of shoots from leaf explants of the Paradise tree (Melia azedarach L.) was studied. Three different portions (proximal portion, distal portion and rachis of the leaflets) of three developmental stages (folded, young still expanding and completely expanded) of leaves of 10 – 15 years old plants of seven genotypes were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium (MS) supplemented with 1mg.l-1 benzylaminopurine (BAP) + 0.1mg.l-1 kinetin (KIN) + 3 mg.l-1 adenine sulphate (ADS).
The rachis of the leaflets of the completely expanded leaves was found to be the most responsive tissue, in most of the More >

Feasibility of microsurgical reconstruction of the male reproductive tract after percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration (PESA)

Peter T. K. Chan, Jamie Libman

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.10, No.6, pp. 2070-2073, 2003

Abstract For obstructive azoospermia, surgical sperm retrieval from the epididymis for IVF/ICSI is an established management. However, various recent studies have established that surgical reconstruction with vasovasostomy or vasoepididymostomy remains a more cost-effective treatment option than upfront assisted reproduction. After epididymal sperm retrieval, fibrosis and scarring of the punctured epididymal tubule can lead to complete epididymal obstruction. The feasibility of surgical reconstruction after surgical epididymal sperm retrieval has not been established. We describe two cases of bilateral microsurgical vasoepididymostomy, using a new 2-suture longitudinal intussusception technique we previously described, after previous successful bilateral percutaneous epididymal sperm More >
