Herbicide effects on cuticle ultrastructure in Eleusine indica and Portulaca oleracea

    ROSANA N. MALPASSI

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 51-56, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.051

Abstract Eleusine indica and Portulaca oleracea are two common weeds in peanut crops in southern Córdoba. Two chemicals are frequently used to control them, quizalofop for grasses and lactofen for dicots. The objective is to study the effects of quizalofop and lactofen on cuticle ultrastructure in E. indica and P. oleracea, respectively. In the lab, quizalofop was applied on E. indica and lactofen on P. oleracea. Three plant categories were analyzed in each species: 3, 1-2, and no tiller in E. indica, and 8, 6, and 2 nomophylls in P. oleracea. Leaf samples from both species were collected at 7 and 16 days post-application… More >

Embolization of a massive retropubic hemorrhage following a tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure: case report and literature review

Kevin C. Zorn, Sebastien Daigle, Francois Belzile, Le Mai Tu

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 2560-2563, 2005

Abstract Introduction: Since its description by Ulmsten, the TVT procedure has been proven to be safe and well tolerated. Bleeding and hematoma formation, although rare, can occur. Both conservative and surgical managements of this complication have been described.
Materials: We report the first case in which a pelvic branch of the obturator artery was embolized using angiography.
Results: Our patient was spared surgical exploration and retained the TVT tape.
Conclusion: Angiography with vessel embolization, when available, should be considered in the treatment of TVT-procedure retropubic hemorrhages. More >

    Laparoscopic simple prostatectomy

Brian D. M. Blew, Luke M. Fazio, Kenneth Pace, R. John D’A. Honey

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, No.6, pp. 2891-2894, 2005

Abstract Classically, surgical options for very large prostate glands, not amenable to transurethral resection, include suprapubic or retropubic simple prostatectomy and Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP). We present a case managed with a laparoscopic simple prostatectomy. Technical considerations are discussed as well as possible advantages of this approach including decreased blood loss, faster patient recovery and improved visualization. More >

Comparative study of mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor queens obtained from polygynic and monogynic colonies

LUCIANA FIORETTI GRACIOLI-VITTI, FÁBIO CAMARGO ABDALLA, REGINA LÚCIA MORELLI SILVA DE MORAES

    BIOCELL, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-5, 2005, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2005.29.001

Abstract The aim of the present study was analyze, by histological and morphometrical studies, mandibular glands of Melipona bicolor queens collected from monogynic and polygynic colonies and compare their level of development. The results showed that the glands of physogastric queens from monogynic colony present a higher level of activity in relation to the queens of polygynic colonies; this is explained by the fact that just a unique queen controls the monogynic colony. In the polygynic colonies, the queens may divide such control to each other. More >

A High Resolution Pressure-Based Method for Compressible Fluid Flow

    M.H. Djavareshkian1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.1, No.4, pp. 329-342, 2005, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2005.001.329

Abstract A pressure-based Euler scheme, based on a collocated grid arrangement is described. The newly developed algorithm has two new prominent features: (i) the use of normalized variables to bound the convective fluxes and (ii) the use of a high-resolution scheme in calculating interface density values to enhance the shock-capturing property of the algorithm. The algorithm is first tested for flows at different Mach numbers ranging from subsonic to supersonic on a bump in a channel geometry; then the results are compared with the corresponding ones obtained without the bounded scheme in the correction step. On the Nature and Structure of Possible Three-dimensional Steady Flows in Closed and Open Parallelepipedic and Cubical Containers under Different Heating Conditions and Driving Forces.

    Marcello Lappa1, 2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-20, 2005, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2005.001.001

Abstract Possible natural transport mechanisms in cubical and shallow cavities with different heating conditions (from below or from the side) are investigated by means of numerical solution of the non-linear model equations and multiprocessor computations. Attention is focused on a variety of three-dimensional steady effects that can arise in such configurations in the case of low-Pr liquids (silicon melt) even for relatively small values of the temperature gradient due to localized boundary effects and/or true instabilities of the flow. Such aspects are still poorly known or completely ignored owing to the fact that most of the More >

Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) is required for murine resistance to Candida albicans and is critically involved in Candida-induced production of cytokines

Abstract We have studied the role of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), the universal Toll-like receptor (TLR) adaptor protein, in murine defenses against We have studied the role of myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88), the universal Toll-like receptor (TLR) adaptor protein, in murine defenses against Candida albicans. MyD88-deficient mice, experimen-tally infected in vivo, had a very significant impaired survival, and a higher tissue fungal burden when compared with control mice. The recruitment of neutrophils to the site of infection was also significantly diminished in MyD88-/- mice. In vitro production of proinflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α, IFN-γ and… More >

Preperitoneal mesh-plug herniorraphy during radical retropubic prostatectomy

    Darrel E. Drachenberg1, David G. Bell2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.9, No.4, pp. 1602-1606, 2002

Abstract Background: The treatment of localized prostate cancer has increased over the past decade in large part due to enhanced screening efforts with prostate specific antigen (PSA) and has resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of radical retropubic prostatectomies being performed in recent years. It is estimated that between 5% and 10% of men who are candidates for radical surgical treatment for localized prostate cancer will have concomitant inguinal hernia. Given the well described complications of untreated inguinal hernias we propose that simultaneous repair be undertaken along with radical retropubic prostatectomy for preoperatively defined hernias More >

Transgenic wheat plants resistant to herbicide BASTA obtained by microprojectile bombardment

MARIANA N. MELCHIORRE, HERNÁN R. LASCANO, VICTORIO S.TRIPPI

    BIOCELL, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 217-223, 2002, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2002.26.217

Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum) transgenic plants of an important commercial cv (Oasis) was obtained with an efficient and short procedure. First, the optimum conditions for the embriogenic calli generation from inmature embryos with a high regeneration percentage were established. The transformation of calli was performed by high velocity microprojectile bombardment, using the pAHC25 plasmid, which contains the reporter gene β-glucuronidase (GUS) and the selectable BAR gene which confers resistance to the herbicide Basta. The transformations were confirmed by β-glucuronidase assay activity, PCR and Southern blot analysis. The efficiency of this procedure was high and similar to other More >
