Prostate cancer nomograms are superior to neural networks

    Pierre I. Karakiewicz1,2, Felix K.-H. Chun2,3, Alberto Briganti2, Paul Perrotte1, Michael McCormack1, François Bénard1, Luc Valiquette1, Markus Graefen3, Fred Saad1

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, Suppl.2, pp. 18-25, 2006

Abstract Introduction: Several nomograms have been developed to predict PCa related outcomes. Neural networks represent an alternative.
Methods: We provide a descriptive and an analytic comparison of nomograms and neural networks, with focus on PCa detection.
Results: Our results indicate that nomograms have several advantages that distinguish them from neural networks. These are both quantitative and qualitative.
Conclusion: In the field of PCa detection, nomograms appear to outweigh the benefits of neural networks. However, the neural network methodology represents a valid alternative, which should not be underestimated. More >

Canadian Urological Association guidelines on urinary incontinence

    Jacques Corcos1, Jerzy Gajewski2, Diane Heritz3, Allan Patrick4, Ian Reid5, Erik Schick6, Lynn Stothers7

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.3, pp. 3127-3138, 2006

Abstract Objective: To develop the first Canadian guidelines for the management of adult urinary incontinence (UI).
Method: Following a mandate of the Canadian Urological Association, six Canadian urologists collaborated to produce these guidelines after having extensively reviewed existing foreign guidelines and literature from 1966 to June 2005.
Results: The terminology proposed by the standardization committee of the International Continence Society (ICS) is recommended. Basic evaluation must include a history, physical examination, evaluation of post void residual volume, urinalysis and voiding diary. A more detailed evaluation is recommended for complex cases or if initial management fails. As non-pharmacological treatments,… More >

Does indigo carmine prevent early artificial urinary sphincter cuff erosion?

Steven P. Petrou, David D. Thiel, Daniel S. Elliot, Gregory A. Broderick, Michael J. Wehle, Paul R. Young

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.4, pp. 3195-3198, 2006

Abstract Introduction: Urethral erosion following artificial urinary sphincter (AUS) placement is hypothesized to be secondary to unrecognized intra-operative urethral injury. Intra-urethral indigo carmine solution (ICS), a blue dye, following urethral mobilization should identify intra-operative urethrotomy and prevent early post-operative cuff erosion.
Methods: Retrospective review was completed of all men undergoing AUS (AMS 800 device) insertion between January 2000 and January 2005 for post prostatectomy stress incontinence at one institution. Operative reports were examined for use of intra-operative injection of ICS as well as documentation of urethral injury. Post-operative course was reviewed for evidence of early cuff erosion.… More >

Variation in worm assemblages associated with Pomacea canaliculata (Caenogastropoda, Ampullariidae) in sites near the Río de la Plata estuary, Argentina

    C. DAMBORENEA*, F. BRUSA*, A. PAOLA**

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 457-468, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.457

Abstract Pomacea canaliculata is a common gastropod in freshwater habitats from Central and Northern Argentina, extending northwards into the Amazon basin. Several Platyhelminthes have been reported associated to P. canaliculata, sharing an intimate relationship with this gastropod host. The objectives of this study were to describe the symbiotic species assemblages associated to P. canaliculata in the study area, and to disclose differences among them. Samples were taken in three typical small streams and one artificial lentic lagoon, all connected with the Río de la Plata estuary. The 81.53% were infested with different symbiotic (sensu lato) species. Among the Platyhelminthes, the… More >

Double-purpose wheat production and its association with a short-cycle wheat

Lutz EE, HD Merchán, AE Morant*

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.75, pp. 85-89, 2006, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2006.75.085

Abstract Management of a double purpose wheat is not easy. Therefore, a simpler management alternative was studied: the mixture of two wheat varieties, one of long- cycle and the other one of short-cycle. Research was effected in the experimental field of the Asociación of Cooperativas Argentinas (38º 36´S, 61º 58´O and 122 m asl), 15 Km SW of Cabildo (Bs. As), in the semi-arid wheat subregion V S. At this place, forage and grain production of a suitable double-purpose wheat (ProINTA Pincén) was compared to its mixture with a short-cycle variety (Cooperación Calquín), either in the More >

Prediction of Dendritic Parameters and Macro Hardness Variation in PermanentMould Casting of Al-12%Si Alloys Using Artificial Neural Networks

    E. Abhilash1, M.A. Joseph1, Prasad Krishna1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 211-220, 2006, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2006.002.211

Abstract Aluminium-Silicon alloys are in high de-mand as an engineering material for automotive, aerospace and other engineering applications. Mechanical properties of Al-Si alloys depend not only on chemical composition but also more importantly on microstructural features such as dendritic alpha-aluminiumphase and eutectic silicon particles. As an additive to Al-Si alloys, sodium improves mechanical properties byforming finer and fewer needles like microstructures. Thus, prediction of the macro and microstructures obtained at the end of the solidification is of great interest for the manufacturer of aluminium alloys. Neuralnetworks are sophisticated nonlinear regression routinesthat, when properly “trained”, allow for the identificationof More >

Kinetics Analysis of Binding between Melanoma Cells and Neutrophils

    Meghan H. Hoskins*, Cheng Dong∗,†

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 79-88, 2006, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2006.003.079

Abstract It has been determined previously that polymorphonuclear leukocytes, or PMNs, can facilitate melanoma cell extravasation through the endothelium under shear conditions [1,2]. The interactions between melanoma cells and PMNs are mediated by the β2-integrins expressed by PMNs and intercellular adhesion molecules (ICAM-1) expressed on melanoma cells. In this study, the kinetics of these interactions was studied using a parallel plate flow chamber. The dissociation rates were calculated under low force conditions for ICAM-1 interactions with both β2-integrins, LFA-1 (CD11a/CD18) and Mac-1 (CD11b/CD18), together and separately by using functional blocking antibodies on PMNs. The kinetics of PMNs More >

Investigations on the Accuracy and Condition Number for the Method of Fundamental Solutions

    C.C. Tsai1, Y.C. Lin2, D.L. Young2,3, S.N. Atluri4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 103-114, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.016.103

Abstract In the applications of the method of fundamental solutions, locations of sources are treated either as variables or a priori known constants. In which, the former results in a nonlinear optimization problem and the other has to face the problem of locating sources. Theoretically, farther sources results in worse conditioning and better accuracy. In this paper, a practical procedure is provided to locate the sources for various time-independent operators, including Laplacian, Helmholtz operator, modified Helmholtz operator, and biharmonic operator. Wherein, the procedure is developed through systematic numerical experiments for relations among the accuracy, condition number, and More >
