    Cysteine proteinases of Trypanosoma cruzi: from digestive enzymes to programmed cell death mediators

    Abstract Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite causing Chagas disease, contains a number of proteolytic enzymes. The recent completion of the genome sequence of the T. cruzi CL Brener clone suggests the presence of 70 cysteine peptidases, 40 serine peptidases (none of them from the chymotrypsin family), about 250 metallopeptidases (most leishmanolysin homologues), 25 threonine peptidases, and only two aspartyl peptidases, none of them from the pepsin family.     The Effects of BclXL and Bax Over-expression on Stretch-injury Induced Neural Cell Death

    Abstract The Bcl-2 family of proteins has recently been implicated as a possible player in the complex cascade of neural cell death due to traumatic brain injuries. However, it is unclear if the Bcl-2 pathways are activated in mechanically injured neurons. Here we report the effects of BclXL and Bax over-expression on stretch-induced neural cell death using an in vitro uniaxial stretch model of traumatic axonal injury.     Ultrastructural effects of two phthalocyanines in CHO-K1 and HeLa cells after laser irradiation

    Abstract The effects of Photodynamic Therapy using 2nd generation photosensitizers have been widely investigated aiming clinical application treatment of solid neoplasms. In this work, ultrastructure changes caused by the action of two 2nd generation photosensitizers and laser irradiation on CHO-K1 and HeLa (neoplastic) cells were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride, aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate chloride and radiation from a semiconductor laser at a fluency of 0.5 J/ cm2 (Power=26mW; λ=670nm) were used.
