    G. Davì1, A. Milazzo1, C. Orlando1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 129-136, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.129

Abstract A dual reciprocity based boundary element approach for the analysis of magneto-electric laminates free vibration behavior is presented. The problem is formulated employing generalized displacements, that is displacements and electric and magnetic scalar potentials, and the corresponding generalized tractions. The generalized boundary integral representation is deduced by extending the reciprocity theorem to magneto-electro-elasticity problem and the multidomain boundary element technique is used to model multilayer structures. The magneto-electro-elastic static fundamental solutions are used jointly with the dual reciprocity method to transform the inertia domain integral into a boundary integral. Numerical results are presented focusing on More >

    L. Zhang1, T. Boulet1, J. Hein1, M. Arnoult1, M. Negahban1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 37-46, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.037

Abstract The modeling of the response of the human head to blast like loading is of importance for many applications including the study of traumatic brain injury resulting from improvised explosive devices. One key issue in simulating the response of the head is to have models that are characteristic of the response of the head and its components under these conditions. We review different characterization efforts for evaluating the response of the skin, skull, and brain within this window of response and use these results to develop models appropriate for the characterization of each component. CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.55, No.1, pp. 33-60, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.055.033

Abstract An 3-D precorrected-FFT accelerated BEM approach for the linear elastic analysis of porous solids with randomly distributed pores of arbitrary shape and size is described in this paper. Both the upper bound and the lower bound of elastic properties of solids with spherical pores are obtained using the developed fast BEM code. Effects of porosity and pore shape on the elastic properties are investigated. The performance of several theoretical models is evaluated by comparing the theoretical predictions with the numerical results. It is found that for porous solids with spherical pores, the performances of the More >

    ShadiaJ. Ikhmayies1, Naseem M. Abu El-Haija1, Riyad N. Ahmad-Bitar1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 165-178, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.165

Abstract Undoped polycrystalline ZnO thin films were produced on glass substrates at a substrate temperature Ts= 450 C by the spray pyrolysis (SP) technique. The films were characterized by analyzing their I-V curves, transmittance, X-ray diffractograms (XRD) and their scanning electron microscope (SEM) images. The I-V plots are all linear and the resistivity was found to be about 200W.cm. The transmittance in the visible and near infrared regions is as high as 85% which is suitable for solar cell applications. The absorption coefficient which is deduced from the transmittance measurements is continuously increasing with the photon's… More >

    Martínez-Corral1 L, E Martínez-Rubín2, F Flores-García1, GC Castellanos2, AR Juárez2, MJD López3

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.78, pp. 43-47, 2009, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2009.78.043

Abstract The increasing demand of alfalfa crop production in the Lagunera Region has caused the search of new alternatives to the conventional methods of nutritional and hydric evaluation of alfalfa, where costs and time are optimized. The use of a machine vision system for computerized visual recognition of the crop hydric and/or nutritional stress implies the analysis and processing of certain characteristics, such as color, shape and object dimensions from a digital image. Due to the fact that identification parameters are closely related, it is necessary to compile information from specialists, foliar analysis, mathematical morphology and More >

Seam weld characterization by FEM analysys in aluminium extrusion

    L. Donati, L. Tomesani

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 37-38, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.012.037

Abstract In recent years aluminum extruded hollow profiles are increasingly used in near-net shape manufacturing processes such as bending and hydroforming; in fact, by applying these secondary processes, it is possible to obtain very high complex parts, especially for the transport industry. It is known that hollow profiles obtained by direct hot extrusion necessarily have some longitudinal welding lines (so called seam welds) produced inside the die and it is common experience, during secondary forming processes, the appearance of early cracking in proximity of those lines [1,2]. At the same time, the direct hot extrusion is… More >

    Eun A Hwang1, Haeng-Ki Lee1, Jong Won Kwark2, Jung Woo Lee2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 11-12, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.012.011

Abstract Concrete structures such as concrete safety barriers are often subjected to direct impact loads mainly due to vehicle crash impact. In this case, the impact resistance is one of the most critical characteristic of concrete used in such structures. The present study aims to characterize the impact resistance of lightweight aggregate cellular concrete (LACC), which will be used in concrete barriers. Impact tests on LACC specimens were carried out based on the repeated drop-weight impact test guideline recommend by ACI committee 544. Impact resistance and compressive strength of the LACC specimens were characterized and the More >

Characterization of the Chondrocyte Actin Cytoskeleton in Living Three-Dimensional Culture: Response to Anabolic and Catabolic Stimuli

    Dominik R. Haudenschild∗,†, Jianfen Chen∗,†, Nikolai Steklov, Martin K. Lotz*, Darryl D. D’Lima∗,‡

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 135-144, 2009, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2009.006.135

Abstract The actin cytoskeleton is a dynamic network required for intracellular transport, signal transduction, movement, attachment to the extracellular matrix, cellular stiffness and cell shape. Cell shape and the actin cytoskeletal configuration are linked to chondrocyte phenotype with regard to gene expression and matrix synthesis. Historically, the chondrocyte actin cytoskeleton has been studied after formaldehyde fixation - precluding real-time measurements of actin dynamics, or in monolayer cultured cells. Here we characterize the actin cytoskeleton of living low-passage human chondrocytes grown in three-dimensional culture using a stably expressed actin-GFP construct. GFP-actin expression does not substantially alter the… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.10, No.3, pp. 243-258, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.010.243

Abstract In this study, effects of the plastic deformation and the time-dependent deformation behavior on the fundamental relations in the Oliver & Pharr method are studied by using finite element analysis based on a viscoelastic-plastic model developed for polymers. The study eventually yields an experimental protocol and using which, the instantaneous modulus of the viscoelastic-plastic materials may be reliably determined. Experiments have been performed on four polymers to verify the conclusions from the numerical analysis. More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.32, No.3, pp. 229-235, 2008, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2008.32.229

Abstract A new cation exchangers (CAXs) gene was cloned and characterized from Capsella bursapastoris by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The full-length cDNA sequence of cax from C. bursa-pastoris (designated as Cbcax51) was 1754 bp containing a 1398 bp open reading frame encoding a polypeptide of 466 amino-acid residues with a calculated molecular mass of 50.5 kDa and an isoelectric point of 5.69. The predicted CbCAX51 contained an IMP dehydrogenase/GMP reductase domain, two Na+/Ca2+ exchanger protein domains. Comparative and bioinformatics analyses revealed that CbCAX51 showed extensive homology with CAX from other plant species. The expression analysis by different treatments More >
