    Huizhen Liu1,2, Duanying Wan3, Meng Wang3, Zheming Zhu3, Liyun Yang2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.138, No.1, pp. 349-368, 2024, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.028197 - 22 September 2023

Abstract Stress waves affect the stress field at the crack tip and dominate the dynamic crack propagation. Therefore, evaluating the influence of blasting stress waves on the crack propagation behavior and the mechanical characteristics of crack propagation is of great significance for engineering blasting. In this study, ANSYS/LS-DYNA was used for blasting numerical simulation, in which the propagation characteristics of blasting stress waves and stress field distribution at the crack tip were closely observed. Moreover, ABAQUS was applied for simulating the crack propagation path and calculating dynamic stress intensity factors (DSIFs). The universal function was calculated… More >

    Yujia Liu1,2, Bo Xu1, Sen Tang3, Lang Li1, Chao He1, Qingyuan Wang1,2,3, Chong Wang1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.010057

Abstract This paper presents a thermodynamic characterization method for estimating the internal crack growth rate, which has been a puzzle in very high cycle fatigue research. A theoretical approach of surface temperature is established with crack size, initiation site, and time for thin sheet material. Infrared thermography is used to study the inner crack behavior and the heat dissipation phenomenon under 20 kHz vibration loading on high-strength stainless steel. A numerical simulation reveals the consequent temperature elevation on the surfaces by the heat generation at the crack tip and the heat conduction. Ultimately, the internal crack More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.4, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09077

Abstract Non-autoclaved concrete pipe piles are gaining attention as an environmentally friendly alternative to autoclaved concrete pipe piles. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the impact resistance of a non-autoclaved concrete pipe pile with the addition of rubber. To this end, various volume fractions of rubber particles were used to replace the fine sand in the non-autoclaved pipe pile concrete (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%). Additionally, the axial impact resistance of rubber modified non-autoclaved concrete pipe pile was studied from the concrete materials and pipe pile components through quasi-static, dynamic compression… More >

Effects of Material Heterogeneity on the Blast-Induced Rock Crack Initiation and Propagation

    Shuyu Wang1, Linjuan Wang1,*, Yunteng Wang2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 1-1, 2023, DOI:10.32604/icces.2023.09217

Abstract Material heterogeneity plays an important role in the blasting induced rock fracture. However, the investigation of the effects of material heterogeneity is limited by the numerical methods for dynamic fracture. In the work, we propose a peridynamic model for brittle rock with heterogeneous micro-modulus and critical stretch to investigate the effects of material heterogeneity on the blast-induced rock crack initiation and propagation. The discretization in polar coordinates is introduced into the proposed model to avoid the fallacious directional guidance to the crack initiation around the hole. The proposed model satisfies the More >

Gustavo von Zeska de França, Roberto Luís de Assumpção, Marco Antonio Luersen*, Carlos Henrique da Silva

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.77, No.2, pp. 1411-1424, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2023.043811 - 29 November 2023

Abstract Austempered ductile iron (ADI) is composed of an ausferritic matrix with graphite nodules and has a wide range of applications because of its high mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, and wear resistance compared to other cast irons. The amount and size of the nodules can be controlled by the chemical composition and austenitizing temperature. As the nodules have lower stiffness than the matrix and can act as stress concentrators, they influence crack propagation. However, the crack propagation mechanism in ADI is not yet fully understood. In this study, we describe a numerical investigation of crack propagation… More >

Zeyuan Zhou, Ming Yu, Xinfeng Wang*, Zaixing Huang

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.137, No.3, pp. 2593-2620, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2023.027384 - 03 August 2023

Abstract How to simulate fracture mode and crack propagation path in a plate with multiple cracks is an attractive but dicult issue in fracture mechanics. Peridynamics is a recently developed nonlocal continuum formulation that can spontaneously predict the crack nucleation, branch and propagation in materials and structures through a meshfree discrete technique. In this paper, the peridynamic motion equation with boundary traction is improved by simplifying the boundary transfer functions. We calculate the critical cracking load and the fracture angles of the plate with multiple cracks under uniaxial tension. The results are consistent with those predicted More > Graphic Abstract

Abstract A micromechanical model is presented to study the initiation and propagation of microcracks of intermetallic compounds (IMCs) in solder joints. The effects of the grain aggregate morphology, the grain boundary defects and the sensitivity of the various cohesive zone parameters in predicting the overall mechanical response are investigated. The overall strength is predominantly determined by the weak grain interfaces; both the grain aggregate morphology and the weak grain interfaces control the crack configuration; the different normal and tangential strengths of grain interfaces result in different intergranular cracking behaviors and play a critical role in determining More >

    Guojun Zheng1,2, Zhaomin Yan1, Yang Xia1,2, Ping Hu1,2, Guozhe Shen1,2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.134, No.3, pp. 1975-1995, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.021415 - 20 September 2022

Abstract Peridynamics (PD) is a non-local mechanics theory that overcomes the limitations of classical continuum mechanics (CCM) in predicting the initiation and propagation of cracks. However, the calculation efficiency of PD models is generally lower than that of the traditional finite element method (FEM). Structural idealization can greatly improve the calculation efficiency of PD models for complex structures. This study presents a PD shell model based on the micro-beam bond via the homogenization assumption. First, the deformations of each endpoint of the micro-beam bond are calculated through the interpolation method. Second, the micro-potential energy of the More >

Zhijian Wu, Li Guo*, Jun Hong

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.134, No.1, pp. 611-636, 2023, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.020694 - 24 August 2022

Abstract The local arc-length method is employed to control the incremental loading procedure for phase-field brittle fracture modeling. An improved staggered algorithm with energy and damage iterative tolerance convergence criteria is developed based on the residuals of displacement and phase-field. The improved staggered solution scheme is implemented in the commercial software ABAQUS with user-defined element subroutines. The layered system of finite elements is utilized to solve the coupled elastic displacement and phase-field fracture problem. A one-element benchmark test compared with the analytical solution was conducted to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the developed method. Our More >
