The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 4-10, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.013.004

Abstract The purpose of this research is to determine fracture effects of vulcanize elastomer at various thickness to width ratios under opening mode fracture mechanics. The J-integral values from finite element method are compared with those from experiment. In this research, fracture tests perform under Single Edge Notch Tensile (S.E.N.T) tests using the multiple-specimen method. Compare to the experimental data, the numerical results are acceptable at the deep crack length, i.e. high crack length to width ratio. The k values from the 3-D numerical calculation show that thin sheet is dominated by plane stress state, but thick sheet More >

A New Quadtree-based Image Compression Technique using Pattern Matching Algorithm

    F. Keissarian1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 137-144, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.012.137

Abstract In this paper, a new image compression technique is proposed in which variable block size technique is adopted, using quadtree decomposition, for coding images at low bit rates. The proposed algorithm decomposes the host image into blocks of variable sizes according to histogram analysis of the block residuals. Variable block sizes are then encoded at different rates based on their visual activity levels. To preserve edge integrity, a high-detail block is coded by a set of parameters associated with the pattern appearing inside the block. The use of these parameters at the receiver together with More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 31-56, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.045.031

Abstract The Node-based Local Mesh Generation (NLMG) algorithm, which is free of mesh inconsistency, is one of core algorithms in the Node-based Local Finite Element Method (NLFEM) to achieve the seamless link between mesh generation and stiffness matrix calculation, and the seamless link helps to improve the parallel efficiency of FEM. Furthermore, the key to ensure the efficiency and reliability of NLMG is to determine the candidate satellite-node set of a central node quickly and accurately. FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 313-330, 2009, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2009.005.313

Abstract A numerical study has been carried out to investigate the three-dimen -sional buoyant flow in a parallelepiped box heated from below and partially from the two sidewalls (a configuration commonly used for solidification problems and crystal growth systems). Attention has been paid, in particular, to phenomena of symmetry breaking and transition to unsteady non-symmetric convection for a low Prandtl number fluid (Pr=0.01). The influence of an applied horizontal magnetic field on the stability properties of the flow has been also considered. Results obtained may be summarized as follows: In the absence of magnetic field and More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 1-24, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.038.001

Abstract In this paper we propose a meshfree technique for the numerical solution of the modified equal width wave (MEW) equation. Combination of collocation method using the radial basis functions (RBFs) with first order accurate forward difference approximation is employed for obtaining meshfree solution of the problem. Different types of RBFs are used for this purpose. Performance of the proposed method is successfully tested in terms of various error norms. In the case of non-availability of exact solution, performance of the new method is compared with the results obtained from the existing methods. Propagation of a More >

Vibration and Control of Rotating Tapered Thin-Walled Composite Beam Using Macro Fiber Composite Actuator

    Vadiraja D. N.1, A. D. Sahasrabudhe2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.27, No.1&2, pp. 49-62, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.027.049

Abstract Rotating beams are flexible structures, which are often idealized as cantilever beams. Structural modelling of rotating thin-walled composite beam with embedded MFC actuators and sensors using higher shear deformation theory (HSDT) is presented. A non-Cartesian deformation variable (which represents arc length stretch) is used along with two Cartesian deformation variables. The governing system of equations is derived from Hamilton's principle and solution is obtained by extended Galerkin's method. Optimal control problem is solved using LQG control algorithm. Vibration characteristics and optimal control for a box beam configuration are discussed in numerical examples. Gyroscopic coupling between More >

A Modified Trefftz Method for Two-Dimensional Laplace Equation Considering the Domain's Characteristic Length

    Chein-Shan Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.21, No.1, pp. 53-66, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.021.053

Abstract A newly modified Trefftz method is developed to solve the exterior and interior Dirichlet problems for two-dimensional Laplace equation, which takes the characteristic length of problem domain into account. After introducing a circular artificial boundary which is uniquely determined by the physical problem domain, we can derive a Dirichlet to Dirichlet mapping equation, which is an exact boundary condition. By truncating the Fourier series expansion one can match the physical boundary condition as accurate as one desired. Then, we use the collocation method and the Galerkin method to derive linear equations system to determine the More >

A Highly Accurate Solver for the Mixed-Boundary Potential Problem and Singular Problem in Arbitrary Plane Domain

    Chein-Shan Liu 1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.20, No.2, pp. 111-122, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.020.111

Abstract A highly accurate new solver is developed to deal with interior and exterior mixed-boundary value problems for two-dimensional Laplace equation, including the singular ones. To promote the present study, we introduce a circular artificial boundary which is uniquely determined by the physical problem domain, and derive a Dirichlet to Robin mapping on that artificial circle, which is an exact boundary condition described by the first kind Fredholm integral equation. As a consequence, we obtain a modified Trefftz method equipped with a characteristic length factor, ensuring that the new solver is stable because the condition number More >

Applications of DTALE: Damage Tolerance Analysis and Life Enhancement [3-D Non-plannar Fatigue Crack Growth]

    S. N. Atluri1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-20, 2005, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2005.001.001

Abstract The solution of three-dimensional cracks (arbitrary surfaces of discontinuity) in solids and structures is considered. The BEM, developed based on the symmetric Galerkin BIEs, is used for obtaining the fracture solutions at the arbitrary crack-front. The finite element method is used to model the uncracked global (built-up) structure for obtaining the stresses in an otherwise uncracked body. The solution for the cracked structural component is obtained in an iteration procedure, which alternates between FEM solution for the uncracked body, and the SGBEM solution for the crack in the local finite-sized subdomain. In addition, some crack… More >

    Quang Dang1,1, Hans Gregersen2,2, Birgitte Duch2,2, Ghassan S. Kassab1,1

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 53-62, 2005, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2005.002.053

Abstract Biliary duct obstruction is an important clinical condition that affects millions of people worldwide. We have previously shown that the common bile duct (CBD) undergoes significant growth and remodelling post obstruction. The mechanical stress-strain relation is expected to change due to growth and remodeling in response to obstruction and hence pressure-overload. The objective of the present study was to characterize the material properties of the CBD of the sham group and at 3 hours, 12 hours, 2 days, 8 days and 32 days (n=5 in each group) after obstruction. The Fung's exponential strain energy function… More >
