Mesoscale Modeling of Dynamic Fracture of Ceramic Materials

    Spandan Maiti1, Philippe H. Geubelle1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 91-102, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.005.091

Abstract The dynamic propagation and branching of a mode I crack in polycrystalline brittle materials like ceramics are investigated numerically using a 2-D explicit grain-based cohesive/volumetric finite element scheme. The granular microstructure of the ceramics is taken into account and the crack is restricted to propagate along the grain boundaries. Special emphasis is placed on studying the effect of grain size and cohesive parameters on the crack branching instability. More >

    S. Tchouikov1, T. Nishioka1, T. Fujimoto1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 191-204, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2004.001.191

Abstract Phenomena of dynamic crack branching are investigated numerically from a macroscopic point of view. Repetitive branching phenomena, interaction of cracks after bifurcation and their stability, bifurcation into two and three branches were the objectives of this research. For the analysis of dynamic crack branching, recently we developed moving finite element method based on Delaunay automatic triangulation [Nishioka, Furutuka, Tchouikov and Fujimoto (2002)]. In this study this method was extended to be applicable for complicated crack branching phenomena, such as bifurcation of the propagating crack into more than two branches, multiple crack bifurcation and so on. A Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Approach for 3-Dimensional Elasto-dynamics

    Z. D. Han1, S. N. Atluri2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 129-140, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2004.001.129

Abstract A Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method has been developed for solving 3D elasto-dynamic problems. It is derived from the local weak form of the equilibrium equations by using the general MLPG concept. By incorporating the moving least squares (MLS) approximations for trial and test functions, the local weak form is discretized, and is integrated over the local sub-domain for the transient structural analysis. The present numerical technique imposes a correction to the accelerations, to enforce the kinematic boundary conditions in the MLS approximation, while using an explicit time-integration algorithm. V.K. Tewary2, D.T. Read2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 359-372, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.359

Abstract An integrated Green's function and molecular dynamics technique is developed for multiscale modeling of a nanostructure in a semi-infinite crystal lattice. The equilibrium configuration of the atoms inside and around the nanostructure is calculated by using molecular dynamics that accounts for nonlinear interatomic forces. The molecular dynamics is coupled with the lattice statics Green's function for a large crystallite containing a million or more atoms. This gives a fully atomistic description of a nanostructure in a large crystallite that includes the effect of nonlinear forces. The lattice statics Green's function is then related to the… More >

Calculation of J-Integral and Stress Intensity Factors using the Material Point Method

    Y. Guo1, J. A. Nairn1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 295-308, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.295

Abstract The Material Point Method (MPM), which is a particle-based, meshless method that discretizes material bodies into a collection of material points (the particles), is a new method for numerical analysis of dynamic solid mechanics problems. Recently, MPM has been generalized to include dynamic stress analysis of structures with explicit cracks. This paper considers evaluation of crack-tip parameters, such as J-integral and stress intensity factors, from MPM calculations involving explicit cracks. Examples for both static and dynamic problems for pure modes I and II or mixed mode loading show that MPM works well for calculation of fracture More >

    L. G. Zhou1, L. M. Hsiung2, Hanchen Huang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.6, No.3, pp. 245-252, 2004, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2004.006.245

Abstract Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the deformation of polysynthetically twinned (PST) TiAl at room temperature. The simulation cell is pre-strained and thermodynamically relaxed to zero stress, so that no dislocations pre-exist in γ−α2 interfaces. A uniaxial compression is then applied along one 1/6<112] direction. Our results show that interfacial dislocation pairs nucleate at the γ−α2 interface under the compression. The glide and agglomeration of these dislocations lead to the nucleation of deformation twins from the interface. Based on our studies, twins may nucleate without pre-existing interfacial dislocations. Further we have monitored the propagation of the More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.27, No.3, pp. 301-309, 2003, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2003.27.301

Abstract The effects of Photodynamic Therapy using 2nd generation photosensitizers have been widely investigated aiming clinical application treatment of solid neoplasms. In this work, ultrastructure changes caused by the action of two 2nd generation photosensitizers and laser irradiation on CHO-K1 and HeLa (neoplastic) cells were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Aluminum phthalocyanine chloride, aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate chloride and radiation from a semiconductor laser at a fluency of 0.5 J/ cm2 (Power=26mW; λ=670nm) were used. The results showed induction of apoptosis. Such alterations where observed in HeLa but not in CHO-K1 cells after Aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate chloride (AlPcS4) photodynamic More >

    Jan Sladek1, Vladimir Sladek1, Chuanzeng Zhang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.6, pp. 637-648, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.637

Abstract A new computational method for solving transient elastodynamic initial-boundary value problems in continuously non-homogeneous solids, based on the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method, is proposed in the present paper. The moving least squares (MLS) is used for interpolation and the modified fundamental solution as the test function. The local Petrov-Galerkin method for unsymmetric weak form in such a way is transformed to the local boundary integral equations (LBIE). The analyzed domain is divided into small subdomains, in which a weak solution is assumed to exist. Nodal points are randomly spread in the analyzed domain and More >

A MLPG (LBIE) method for solving frequency domain elastic problems

    E. J. Sellountos1, D. Polyzos2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.6, pp. 619-636, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.619

Abstract A new meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method for solving two dimensional frequency domain elastodynamic problems is proposed. Since the method utilizes, in its weak formulation, either the elastostatic or the frequency domain elastodynamic fundamental solution as test function, it is equivalent to the local boundary integral equation (LBIE) method. Nodal points spread over the analyzed domain are considered and the moving least squares (MLS) interpolation scheme for the approximation of the interior and boundary variables is employed. Two integral equations suitable for the integral representation of the displacement fields in the local sub- domains are… More >

3-D Transient Dynamic Crack Analysis by a Novel Time-Domain BEM

    Ch. Zhang2, A. Savaidis3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.5, pp. 603-618, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.603

Abstract A novel non-hypersingular time-domain traction BEM is presented for three-dimensional (3-D) transient elastodynamic crack analysis. The initial-boundary value problem is formulated as a set of non-hypersingular time-domain traction boundary integral equations (BIEs). To solve the time-domain traction BIEs, a time-stepping scheme based on the convolution quadrature formula of Lubich (1988a,b; 1994) for temporal discretization and a collocation method for spatial discretization is adopted. Numerical examples are given for an unbounded solid with a penny-shaped crack under a tensile and shear impact loading. A comparison of the present time-domain BEM with the conventional one shows that More >
