A Rate-Dependent Peridynamic Model for the Dynamic Behavior of Ceramic Materials

    Bufan Chu1,2, Qiwen Liu1,2, Lisheng Liu1,2,3,*, Xin Lai1,2, Hai Mei1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.124, No.1, pp. 151-178, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.010115 - 19 June 2020

Abstract In this study, a new bond-based peridynamic model is proposed to describe the dynamic properties of ceramics under impact loading. Ceramic materials show pseudo-plastic behavior under certain compressive loadings with high strain-rate, while the characteristic brittleness of the material dominates when it is subjected to tensile loading. In this model, brittle response under tension, softening plasticity under compression and strain-rate effect of ceramics are considered, which makes it possible to accurately capture the overall dynamic process of ceramics. This enables the investigation of the fracture mechanism for ceramic materials, during ballistic impact, in more detail.… More >

CFD INVESTIGATIONS OF THERMAL AND DYNAMIC BEHAVIORS IN A TUBULAR HEAT EXCHANGER WITH BUTTERFLY BAFFLES

AlemKarimaa,*, Sahel Djamelb , Nemdili Alic, Ameur Houarid

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.10, pp. 1-7, 2018, DOI:10.5098/hmt.10.27

Abstract In the present paper, the effects of a new baffle design on the efficiency of a tubular heat exchanger are numerically investigated. It concerns butterfly baffles inserted in a cylindrical tube heat exchanger. We focus on the influence of the shape of baffles, the space between baffles (pitch ratio, PR) and the baffle size (i.e. the blockage ratio, BR) on the heat transfer and flow characteristics. Three geometrical configurations with different PRs are realized (PR = 1, 2 and 4) and five others with different blockage ratios (BR = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5). More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.90, No.2, pp. 165-177, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.090.165

Abstract The authors have developed a remote operate vehicle (ROV) that allow carried out highly risky task, in confined space such as inside of submerged sewers and pipes systems, areas were commercial ROV may not provide good performing. In addition, this ROV is low cost. This paper analyses based on the computational fluid dynamic the hydrodynamic performance of this ROV. The first part of the paper presents the theoretical approach and introduces the finite volume model developed in order to complete the study. Results of the model compare with published research shows good agreement. The second More >

Lattice Boltzmann Simulation of Dynamic Behavior of Liquid Droplets on Solid Surfaces

Masato Yoshino, Yoshito Tanaka, Keisuke Yano

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.18, No.4, pp. 131-132, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.018.131

Abstract Dynamics of droplet impact on solid surfaces is of great importance in many engineering applications such as ink-jet printing and rapid spray cooling of hot surfaces. In this study, the lattice kinetic scheme based on the lattice Boltzmann method for immiscible two-phase fluids [Inamuro (2006)] is applied to such micro-fluid problems. The present method enables us to perform stable calculations of two-phase flows with large density ratios of up to 1000. The boundary condition based on the wetting potential that is calculated according to a prescribed static contact angle is used on solid surfaces [Briant,… More >

Temperature-dependent Thermodynamic Behaviors of Carbon Fullerene Molecules at Atmospheric Pressure

    Wen-Hwa Chen1,2, Chun-Hung Wu1, Hsien-Chie Cheng3,4,5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.25, No.3, pp. 195-214, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.025.195

Abstract The study aims at investigating the linear and volumetric thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) at temperature below the Debye temperature and phase transformation behaviors at atmospheric pressure of carbon fullerenes, i.e., C60, C70 and C80, through a modified Nosé-Hoover (NH) thermostat method incorporated with molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The calculated results are compared with those obtained from the standard NH and "massive" NHC (MNHC) thermostats and also with the literature experimental and theoretical data. Results show that at temperature below the Debye temperature, the CTEs of the fullerene molecules would significantly decrease with a decreasing temperature and tend… More >

Wave Propagation in Unsaturated Poroelastic Media: Boundary Integral Formulation and Three-dimensional Fundamental Solution

    P. Maghoul1, B. Gatmiri1,2, D. Duhamel1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.78, No.1, pp. 51-76, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.078.051

Abstract This paper aims at obtaining boundary integral formulations as well as three dimensional(3D) fundamental solutions for unsaturated soils under dynamic loadings for the first time. The boundary integral equations are derived via the use of the weighted residuals method in a way that permits an easy discretization and implementation in a Boundary Element code. Also, the associated 3D fundamental solutions for such deformable porous medium are derived in Laplace transform domain using the method of Hérmander. The derived results are verified analytically by comparison with the previously introduced corresponding fundamental solutions in elastodynamic limiting case. More >

LIQUID WATER DYNAMIC BEHAVIORS IN THE GDL AND GC OF PEMFCS USING LATTICE BOLTZMANN METHOD

Li Chen, Hui-Bao Luan, Wen-Quan Tao*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 1-11, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.2.3002

Abstract Multi-phase lattice Boltzmann method is applied to investigate liquid water transport in th GDL and GC. The liquid water transport processes in the GDL, near the GDL-GC interfaces and in the GC are discussed. The effects of channel land on liquid water dynamic behaviors and distribution in the GDL and GC are investigated. It is found that channel land covers the GDL-GC interface where liquid water reaches changes the water distribution near the GDL-GC interface and in the GC. While channel land is apart from the GDL-GC interface where liquid water reaches changes the effects More >

Computer Simulation of Fire Dynamic Behavior for A Typical Commercial Basement

    C.S. Lin1, S.C. Wang1, K.D. Chou1, T.C. Chen1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 27-28, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.027

Abstract It is a common practice that most underground basements of buildings are utilized/developed for commercial purposes/stores in Taiwan. Many basement fires occurred and caused tremendous losses of human lives and properties in the past twenty years. Therefore protecting against basement fires in commercial buildings is of important concern in Taiwan. Smoke gases from a basement building fire might spread through corridors and ventilation systems to the entire building. This study utilizes Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) software to develop a computer simulation model for investigating a typical basement barbershop fire that occurred in 1993. The fire More >
