Mechanical Properties of CP Ti Processed via a High-Precision Laser Powder Bed Fusion Process

    Hui Liu1, Xu Song1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011362

Abstract Because of its higher specific strength and better biocompatibility, commercially pure titanium (CP Ti) is widely used for product fabrication in the aerospace, medical, and other industries. Currently, different ways are adopted to strengthen CP Ti, such as solid-solution strengthening using oxygen or adding metal components to form alloys; however, the introduction of oxygen, other gases, or alloying elements reduces the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Herein, CP Ti with a low oxygen content was used to fabricate samples via a high-precision laser powder bed fusion process. Smaller laser beam diameter and thinner layer thickness lead More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011319

Abstract Elastically isotropic open-cell lattice metamaterials exhibit identical elastic properties along arbitrary directions, and are ideal candidates for applications with unknown primary loading directions. Their open-cell properties are preferred for additive manufacturing processes and multifunctional applications requiring mass and heat transfer. This presentation focuses on the design, simulation, fabrication, and experimental tests of elastically isotropic open-cell lattice metamaterials with superior stiffness. First, a family of elastically isotropic truss lattices are analytically devised through combining elementary cubic lattices with contrary elastic anisotropy. The proposed stretching-dominated truss lattices can reach nearly 1/3 of the Hashin-Shtrikman upper bounds at… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011288

Abstract Hierarchically designed metamaterials can be found in numerous fields such as hard biomaterials and man-made structures. Recently, additively manufactured metamaterials are very promising in meeting the increasing demands for materials providing nearly isotropic yield strength in lightweight engineering as the controlled micro-structures. In this paper, a novel hierarchically shell-plate lattice structures are introduced by placing the plates along the closed shell-based structures. With fixed relative density of 10% for hierarchical metamaterials, the effects of different cell sizes and shell thicknesses of shell lattice structures on isotropy are studied. Based on theoretical analysis, the design map… More >

Design of Honeycomb Sandwich Structures with Curved Edge Cores for Optimal Thermal Buckling Strength

    Zheng Wu1, Pai Liu1, Zhan Kang1, Yiqiang Wang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-2, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011044

Abstract Honeycomb sandwich structures (HSSs) consist of lightweight cores arranged in periodic polygons [1] between two face sheets. They are widely used in the aerospace industry due to their lightweight but superior strength [2] and energy absorption [3]. As extremely high temperatures might be applied, the sandwich structures may suffer from thermal buckling failure [4] due to thin face walls [5]. This paper designs a new type of HSSs for pursuing optimal thermal buckling strength. The design idea is to replace the vertical straight walls in the honeycomb cores with curved walls. An optimization problem is… More >

Topology Optimization Method Considering Nonlinear Fatigue Damage Accumulation in Time Domain

    Jinyu Gu1, Yingjun Wang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.010958

Abstract In engineering practice, most components are subjected to variable-amplitude cyclic loading, resulting in fatigue damage, which is one of the main forms of damage in engineering structures. Nonlinear damage rule is developed based on linear damage rule, which can predict the fatigue life of structures more accurately. Therefore, we present a topology optimization method considering nonlinear fatigue damage accumulation in the time domain. For the time domain, we adopted the rainflow counting method to evaluate the stress level generated by cyclic loading and the Basquin equation to describe the S-N curve. We applied Morrow's plastic… More >

An Energy-Based Local-Nonlocal Coupling Scheme for Heterogeneous Material Brittle Fractures: Analysis and Simulations

    Shaoqi Zheng1, Zihao Yang1,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.012200

Abstract This study proposes a novel method for predicting the microcrack propagation in composites based on coupling the local and non-local micromechanics. The special feature of this method is that it can take full advantages of both the continuum micromechanics as a local model and peridynamic micromechanics as a non-local model to achieve composite fracture simulation with a higher level of accuracy and efficiency. Based on the energy equivalence, we first establish the equivalent continuum micromechanics model with equivalent stiffness operators through peridynamic micromechanics model. These two models are then coupled into a closed equation system, More >

Elastic Fields of Double Branched and Kalthoff-Winkler Cracks in a Half-Plane

    Yangjian Si1,2, Yujie Wei1,2,*

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-1, 2024, DOI:10.32604/icces.2024.011974

Abstract Edge cracking represents one of the most prominent damage modes in engineering practice and hence receives immense attention from academic societies. When branched cracks or multiple cracks are present at the edge, their propagation may be affected by the interaction between the cracks. In this talk, we may cover the elasticity of a cracked half-plane with two typical scenarios: a double branched crack with two rays emanating from one point on the edge and two edge cracks spaced by a certain distance (Kalthoff–Winkler cracks). By adopting the combination of the Schwartz-Christoffel conformal mapping and the… More >
