Towards Interference-Aware ZigBee Transmissions in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

    Sangsoon Lim1, Sanghyun Seo2,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.66, No.1, pp. 751-765, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.013430

Abstract Cross-technology interference (CTI) from diverse wireless networks such as ZigBee, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi has become a severe problem in the 2.4 GHz Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band. Especially, low power and lossy networks are vulnerable to the signal interferences from other aggressive wireless networks when they perform low power operations to conserve the energy consumption. This paper presents CoSense, which accurately detects ZigBee signals with a reliable signal correlation scheme in the presence of the CTI. The key concept of CoSense is to reduce false wake-ups of low power listening (LPL) by identifying the pre-defined ZigBee signatures. Our scheme… More >

Energy Retrofitting of School Buildings in UAE

Abdelsalam Aldawoud*, Fatma Elzahraa Hosny, Rasha Mdkhana

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.6, pp. 381-395, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.011863

Abstract The opportunities for energy savings by retrofitting of the existing school buildings in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are significant because of their excessive energy consumption and space cooling demand. In this research, energy modeling and simulation are utilized with the use of Design Builder software to examine the influence of various retrofitting measures of air-conditioning (A/C) system and building envelope components on the energy use. Several combined measures are implemented and assessed to achieve the main goal of this research of selecting the best course of action to reduce cooling energy consumption for existing school buildings in the UAE.… More >

Hybrid Soft Computing Technique Based Trust Evaluation Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Supreet Kaur*, Vijay Kumar Joshi

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.2, pp. 217-226, 2020, DOI:10.31209/2018.100000064

Abstract Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are susceptible to safety threats due to cumulative dependence upon transmission, computing, and control mechanisms. Therefore, securing the end-to-end communication becomes a major area of research in WSNs. A majority of existing protocols are based upon signature and recommended-based trust evaluation techniques only. However, these techniques are vulnerable to wormhole attacks that happen due to lesser synchronization between the sensor nodes. Therefore, to handle this problem, a novel hybrid crossover-based ant colony optimization-based routing protocol is proposed. An integrated modified signature and recommendationbased trust evaluation protocol for WSNs is presented. Extensive experiments reveal that the proposed… More >

Koushik Mandlem, Bhaskaran Gopalakrishnan*, Ashish Nimbarte, Roseline Mostafa, Rupa Das

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.4, pp. 165-183, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.011406

Abstract The research details the design and development of a spreadsheet based software system that has been built using the principles of Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation has been applied to a residential building with a certain number of rooms, each with specific characteristics pertaining to volume, occupancy, and thermostat set point. The consideration of variables related to the building envelope and weather, and the HVAC system have provided a realistic view that enables the accurate estimation of annual energy usage and costs. The main findings of the research are reflected in the sensitivity analysis that estimates energy use and cost… More >

    Haiming Sun1,3, Quande Dong2,*, Cuixia Zhang2, Jianqing Chen3,4

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.3, pp. 153-164, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.010706

Abstract The improvement of energy efficiency is considered as one of the keys to the sustainable development of manufacturing enterprises. This paper proposes an energy efficiency improvement method for the manufacturing process. Based on the analysis of the characteristics of energy consumption in the manufacturing process, a necessary energy consumption model, an assistant energy consumption model and an ineffective energy consumption model are constructed for identifying the energy consumption attributes of the manufacturing process. Then, the relationship model of energy consumption is built, and the energy efficiency improvement method for the manufacturing process is proposed based on ECRSR (Elimination, Combination, Rearrangement,… More >

Energy Services: A Proposed Framework to Improve Results

    Tatiana Eutukhova1, Oleksandr Kovalko2, Oleksandr Novoseltsev3,*, Eric Woodroof4

    Energy Engineering, Vol.117, No.3, pp. 99-110, 2020, DOI:10.32604/EE.2020.010864

Abstract Energy services markets are actively developing around the world, but their growth rates need to be accelerated in order to help the world meet energy policy goals. One barrier to energy services markets is confusion created from different terminology used in different parts of the world. In this context, various definitions of the term “energy services” have been analyzed in this paper and it has been recommended to distinguish between “energy services” and “energy-related services”. The structural and functional features of the energy services market conceptual design and its implementation models, as well as the use of energy service companies… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 549-559, 2020, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2020.09219

Abstract The rational design of heating ventilation and air conditioning systems is an important means to achieve energy conservation and sustainable development. The simulation of air-conditioning systems with finite element methods has gradually become an important auxiliary means of complex airspace design. In this paper, a k-ε turbulence model is used to conduct 3D simulations and optimize the summer air conditioning system of a lecture hall. Various conditions are considered in terms of fresh air temperature and flow rate towards the end to improve comfort. The approach used in this paper could also be used in the future as an auxiliary… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.16, No.3, pp. 489-500, 2020, DOI:10.32604/fdmp.2020.08969

Abstract The performances of a refrigeration unit relying on compressors working in parallel have been investigated considering the influence of the compressor volumetric efficiency and isentropic efficiency on the compression ratio. Moreover, the following influential factors have been taken into account: evaporation temperature, condensation temperature and compressor suction-exhaust pressure ratio for different opening conditions of the compressor. The following quantities have been selected as the unit performance measurement indicators: refrigeration capacity, energy efficiency ratio (COP), compressor power consumption, and refrigerant flow rate. The experimental results indicate that the system refrigeration capacity and COP decrease with a decrease in evaporation temperature, increase… More >

    Yifei Wei1, *, Yu Gong1, Qiao Li1, Mei Song1, *, Xiaojun Wang2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.64, No.1, pp. 501-514, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.010048

Abstract In this paper, maximizing energy efficiency (EE) through radio resource allocation for renewable energy powered heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNet) with energy sharing, is investigated. Our goal is to maximize the network EE, conquer the instability of renewable energy sources and guarantee the fairness of users during allocating resources. We define the objective function as a sum weighted EE of all links in the HetNet. We formulate the resource allocation problem in terms of subcarrier assignment, power allocation and energy sharing, as a mixed combinatorial and non-convex optimization problem. We propose an energy efficient resource allocation scheme, including a centralized resource… More >
