Computational Characterization and Evaluation of Deformation Behavior of Spherulite of High Density Polyethylene in Mesoscale Domain

    Y. Tomita 1, M. Uchida 1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.10, No.3, pp. 239-248, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.010.239

Abstract In this study, we clarified the micro- to mesoscopic deformation behavior of a semicrystalline polymer by employing a large-deformation finite element homogenization method. The crystalline plasticity theory with a penalty method for the inextensibility of the chain direction and the nonaffine molecular chain network theory were applied for the representation of the deformation behavior of the crystalline and amorphous phases, respectively, in the composite microstructure of the semicrystalline polymer. The 3D structure of lamellae in the spherulite of high-density polyethylene was modeled, and the tensile and compressive deformation behaviors were investigated. A series of computational More >

An economic evaluation of doxazosin, finasteride and combination therapy in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia

    Heather McDonald1, Margaret Hux1, Marc Brisson2, Lisa Bernard1, J. Curtis Nickel3

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 2327-2340, 2004

Abstract Objective: The Proscar Long-Term Efficacy and Safety Study (PLESS) and the Medical Therapy of Prostatic Symptoms (MTOPS) study provide new evidence regarding the benefits of finasteride in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The objective of this study was to utilize data from the PLESS and MTOPS studies to assess the cost-utility of finasteride and finasteride in combination with doxazosin, compared to doxazosin alone in men with moderate to severe BPH symptoms.
Methods: A semi-Markov decision analytic model was constructed to estimate the clinical consequences, costs and cost-utility of doxazosin, finasteride, and combination therapy. Analyses were… More >

A prospective evaluation of the diagnostic and potential prognostic utility of urinary human telomerase reverse transcriptase mRNA in patients with bladder cancer

    Les Bowles1,2, Hanna Bialkowska-Hobrzanska1,2,3,4, Bernard Bukala5, Linda Nott5, Hassan Razvi2,5

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.6, pp. 2438-2444, 2004

Abstract Human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) mRNA expression has been considered a surrogate marker for telomerase activity based on its parallel detection in urological malignancies, including transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) of the bladder. The objective of this study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic performance of urine hTERT mRNA marker and urine cytology in the detection of bladder cancer.
The multiplex hTERT/GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3- phosphate dehydrogenase) reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay was employed to assess hTERT mRNA expression in urine sediments from 43 patients with clinically apparent TCC undergoing transurethral resection. Tumor grade and pathological stage… More >

A novel rabbit model for the evaluation of biomaterial associated urinary tract infection

    Leo C.T. Fung1, Marc W. Mittelman2, Paul S. Thorner3, Antoine E. Khoury4

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.10, No.5, pp. 2007-2012, 2003

Abstract Objectives: It was the objective of this study to establish an animal model which simulates the conditions of a biomaterial associated bacterial urinary tract infection.
Methods: The curled portion of polyurethane double pig-tail ureteric stents, pre-coated with P. aeruginosa, were inserted transurethrally into the bladder in eight rabbits. Eight control animals received sterile stent material. Microbiology studies of the stent, bladder tissue, and urine, as well as bladder histopathology were evaluated.
Results: P. aeruginosa was recovered from all stent, bladder, and urine specimens in the P. aeruginosa pre-coated stent group, and no P. aeruginosa was present in any More >

An Anisotropic Damage Model for the Evaluation of Load Carrying Capacity of Composite Artificial Ligaments

    P. Vena1, R. Contro

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.3&4, pp. 497-506, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.497

Abstract The adoption of artificial ligaments in current surgery is still characterised by a low success rate due to the fact that mechanical properties of the biomedical devices are such that a biomechanical compatibility is not fully satisfied. A durable artificial ligament should exhibit stiffness as well as strength properties which are such that a full articulation functionality is guaranteed. To this purpose, reliable numerical methods able to predict the mechanical behaviour of such devices both in the elastic and in inelastic range until complete rupture, could be used for designing of devices with tailored mechanical More >

Strength Evaluation of Electronic Plastic Packages Using Stress Intensity Factors of V-Notch

Toru Ikeda1, Isao Arase, Yuya Ueno, Noriyuki Miyazaki

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 91-98, 2000, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2000.001.091

Abstract In electronic devices, the corners of joined dissimilar materials exist between plastic resin and a die pad or a chip. Failure of the plastic resin is often caused from these corners during the assembly process or the operation of products. The strength evaluation of the corner is important to protect the failure of plastic packages. To evaluate the singular stress field around a corner, we utilize the stress intensity factors of the asymptotic solution for a corner of joined dissimilar materials. We show that the accurate stress intensity factor can be analyzed by the displacement More >
