    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 31-56, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.045.031

Abstract The Node-based Local Mesh Generation (NLMG) algorithm, which is free of mesh inconsistency, is one of core algorithms in the Node-based Local Finite Element Method (NLFEM) to achieve the seamless link between mesh generation and stiffness matrix calculation, and the seamless link helps to improve the parallel efficiency of FEM. Furthermore, the key to ensure the efficiency and reliability of NLMG is to determine the candidate satellite-node set of a central node quickly and accurately. Mei-Jiau Huang1, Tung-Chun Tsai1, Liang-Chun Liu1,2, Ming-shan Jeng2, Chang-Chung Yang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 107-130, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.107

Abstract We develop a Monte-Carlo simulator for phonon transport in nanostructured semiconductors, which solves the phonon Boltzmann transport equation under the gray medium approximation. Proper physical models for the phonon transmission/reflection at an interface between two different materials and proper numerical boundary conditions are designed and implemented carefully. Most of all, we take advantage of geometric symmetry that exists in a system to reduce the computational amount. The validity and accuracy of the proposed MC solver was successfully verified via a 1D transient conduction problem and the cross-plane (1D) and in-plane (2D) phonon transport problems associated More >

Numerical Simulation of Graphite Properties Using X-ray Tomography and Fast Multipole Boundary Element Method

    H. T. Wang, G. Hall, S. Y. Yu, Z. H. Yao

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.37, No.2, pp. 153-174, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.037.153

Abstract Graphite materials are widely used in gas-cooled nuclear reactors as both moderators and reflectors. The graphite properties change when the microstructure damage occurs due to the in-core radiation and oxidation, thereby having a strong impact on the service life of graphite. In this paper, the X-ray tomography and the boundary element method (BEM) are introduced to the microstructure modeling and numerical simulations of both the mechanical and thermal property changes of nuclear graphite due to radiolytic oxidation. The model is established by the three-dimensional X-ray scan on the isotropic nuclear graphite Gilsocarbon, which is used… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.35, No.1, pp. 21-48, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.035.021

Abstract The boundary element method (BEM) is known to have the advantage of reducing the dimension of problem by discretizing only the boundary of the domain. But it becomes less attractive for solving Poisson-type equations, due to the need to evaluate the domain integral which is computationally expensive. In this paper, we present the extension of a recently developed fast algorithm for Laplace equation, based on fast Fourier transform on multipoles (FFTM), to solve large scale 3D Poisson-type equations. We combined the Laplace solver with two fast methods for handling the domain integral based on fast More >

A Fast Adaptive Wavelet scheme in RBF Collocation for nearly singular potential PDEs

    Nicolas Ali Libre1,2, Arezoo Emdadi2, Edward J. Kansa3,4, Mohammad Shekarchi2, Mohammad Rahimian2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.38, No.3, pp. 263-284, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.038.263

Abstract We present a wavelet based adaptive scheme and investigate the efficiency of this scheme for solving nearly singular potential PDEs. Multiresolution wavelet analysis (MRWA) provides a firm mathematical foundation by projecting the solution of PDE onto a nested sequence of approximation spaces. The wavelet coefficients then were used as an estimation of the sensible regions for node adaptation. The proposed adaptation scheme requires negligible calculation time due to the existence of the fast Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Certain aspects of the proposed adaptive scheme are discussed through numerical examples. It has been shown that the More >

    J. P. Xu1, Y. Q. Liu1,2, S. Q. Li3, S. C. Wu4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.38, No.3, pp. 201-216, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.038.201

Abstract For the first time, a special-purpose finite element simulation system CoinForm is developed to analyze the embossing process of commemorative coin, in which one-point reduced integration approach is used in solid element finite element dynamic explicit program. Viscous damping hourglass control algorithm can effectively suppress the spurious modes activated by reduced integration and the computational effort is saved about 93% compared with other method that evaluate anti-hourglass force using stabilization matrix. The embossing process of commemorative coin is then simulated and compared with results from the DEFORM 3D software, which verify the excellent performance of More >

A Faster Method of Moments Solution to Double Layer Formulation of Acoustic Scattering

    B. Chrasekhar1, Sadasiva. M. Rao2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.33, No.2, pp. 199-214, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.033.199

Abstract In this work, the acoustic scattering problem based on double layer formulation is solved with a novel numerical technique using method of moment's solution. A new set of basis functions, namely, Edge based Adaptive Basis Functions (EABF) are defined in the method of moment's solution procedure. The geometry of the body is divided into triangular patches and basis functions are defined on the edges. Since the double layer formulation involves the evaluation of the hyper-singular integral, the edge based adaptive basis functions are used to make the solution faster. The matrix equations are derived for More >

    G.A. Gravvanis, K.M. Giannoutakis1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.32, No.1, pp. 35-44, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.032.035

Abstract A new parallel normalized optimized approximate inverse algorithm, based on the concept of the ``fish bone'' computational approach with cyclic distribution of the processors satisfying an antidiagonal data dependency, for computing classes of explicit approximate inverses, is introduced for symmetric multiprocessor systems. The parallel normalized explicit approximate inverses are used in conjunction with parallel normalized explicit preconditioned conjugate gradient square schemes, for the efficient solution of finite element sparse linear systems. The parallel design and implementation issues of the new proposed algorithms are discussed and the parallel performance is presented, using OpenMP. More >

A Rigid-fiber-based Boundary Element Model for Strength Simulation of Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Composites

    H. T. Wang1, Z. H. Yao2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.29, No.1, pp. 1-14, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.029.001

Abstract Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) may provide ultimate enhancement in stiffness and strength for composite materials. This paper presents a rigid-fiber-based boundary integral equation formulation for the numerical simulation of debonding process and the corresponding strength of CNT reinforced composites. The CNT/matrix interfaces are assumed to fail when the interfacial shear force reaches a prescribed threshold, and the CNTs and matrix are considered to be detached in the failed areas. The matrix with one or several tens of originally well-bonded CNTs is subjected to an incremental tensile load and the effective stress-strain relations are readily obtained by… More >
