    Xinzhan Chen1, Xiangqing Kong1,2,*, Ying Fu2,*, Wanting Sun1, Renguo Guan2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.6, pp. 1169-1188, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.014809

Abstract This paper experimentally investigated the flexural behavior of reinforced recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) beams reinforced with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. A total of twelve beams were built and tested up to failure under four-point bending. The main parameters were reinforcement ratio (0.38%, 0.60%, and 1.17%), recycled aggregate replacement ratio (R = 0, 50%, and 100%) and longitudinal reinforcement types (GFRP and steel). The flexural capacity, failure modes, flexibility deformation, reinforcement strains and crack distribution of the tested beams were investigated and compared with the calculation models of American code ACI 440.1-R-15, Canadian code CSA S806-12 and ISIS-M03-07. The tested… More >

    Boheng Zhu1, Huaxin Liu1,*, Genjin Liu2, Abasal Hussain2, Xiaofei Zhang3, Xuezhi Wang1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.3, pp. 507-521, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.013580

Abstract The aim of this study is to improve the bond performance of basalt fiber reinforced polymer (BFRP) bars and recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) after being exposed to high temperatures. The bond behavior (failure modes, bond strength, bond stress-slip curves) between BFRP bars and hybrid fiber recycled aggregate concrete (HFRAC) after being exposed to temperatures ranging from 20°C up to 500°C was studied by using pull-out tests. The effect of high temperatures on mechanical properties of concrete (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength) and tensile strength of BFRP bars was also investigated. The bond strength decreased as the temperature increased and the… More >

Damage Detection for CFRP Based on Planar Electrical Capacitance Tomography

    Wenru Fan, Chi Wang*

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.14, No.4, pp. 303-314, 2020, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2020.011009

Abstract Due to the widespread use of carbon fiber reinforced polymer/plastic (CFRP), the nondestructive structural health monitoring for CFRP is playing an increasingly essential role. As a nonradiative, noninvasive and nondestructive detection technique, planar electrical capacitance tomography (PECT) electrodes array is employed in this paper to reconstruct the damage image according to the calculated dielectric constant changes. The shape and duty ratio of PECT electrodes are optimized according to the relations between sensitivity distribution and the dielectric constant of different anisotropic degrees. The sensitivity matrix of optimized PECT sensor is more uniform as the result shows, because the sensitivity of insensitivity… More >

    Zhen Wang1, Haitao Li1,2,*, Rodolfo Lorenzo3, Ileana Corbi4, Ottavia Corbi4, Changhua Fang2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.8, No.8, pp. 993-1018, 2020, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2020.012488

Abstract Retrofitting of existing ancient and modern timber structures has been an important project recently. And it triggers a need of excellent strengthening methods, so does the strengthening of newly built architecture. Traditional strengthening methods have shortcomings such as high costing and destroying the aesthetic of the structure, many of which can be overcome by means of using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. However, the behavior of FRP-towood systems has yet to be thoroughly researched compared with their FRP-toconcrete or FRP-to-steel counterparts. As FRP retrofitting and strengthening timber structures has a promising future, better understanding of their failure modes will enable… More >

    Meijuan Shan1, 2, Libin Zhao2, *, Wei Huang3, Fengrui Liu2, Jianyu Zhang4, *

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.123, No.1, pp. 101-127, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2020.09099

Abstract The high demands for load-carrying capability and structural efficiency of composite-metal bolted joints trigger in-depth investigations on failure mechanisms of the joints in hygrothermal environments. However, few studies have been presented to exhaustively reveal hygrothermal effects on the failure of CFRP-metal bolted joints, which differ from CFRP-CFRP or metal-metal bolted joints because of the remarkably different material properties of CFRPs and metals. In this paper, hygrothermal effects on tensile failures of single-lap and double-lap CFRP-aluminum bolted joints were experimentally and numerically investigated. A novel numerical model, in which a hygrothermal-included progressive damage model of composites was established and elastic-plastic models… More >

Flexural Performance of CFRP-Bamboo Scrimber Composite Beams

    Xizhi Wu1,2, Xueyou Huang3, Xianjun Li1,*, Yiqiang Wu1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.7, No.12, pp. 1295-1307, 2019, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2019.07839

Abstract This study presents a new structure made up of bamboo scrimber and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) to address the low stiffness and strength of bamboo scrimbers. Three-point bending test and finite element model were conducted to study the failure mode, strain-displacement relationship, load-displacement relationship and relationships between strain distribution, contact pressure and deflection, and adhesive debonding. The results indicated that the flexural modulus and static flexural strength of the composite beams were effectively increased thanks to the CFRP sheets. The flexural modulus of the composite specimens were 2.33-2.94 times that of bamboo scrimber beams, and the flexural strength were… More >

Damage Monitoring of Ultrasonically Welded Aluminum / CFRP-Joints during Cyclic Loading via Electrical Resistance Measurements

    F. Balle1, S. Huxhold1, G. Wagner1, D. Eifler1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 359-370, 2012, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2012.008.359

Abstract Aluminum alloys and carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) are two important materials for lightweight design and the combination of these dissimilar materials becomes increasingly important. Recent investigations have shown that ultrasonic metal welding is a well suited process to realize aluminum/CFRP-joints.The ultrasonic shear oscillation parallel to the welding zone with a simultaneous welding force perpendicular to the aluminum/CFRP-sheets melts the polymer matrix and squeezes the polymer matrix out of the welding zone. This allows a direct contact between the carbon fibers and the aluminum. Beside monotonic properties the cyclic deformation behavior of these ultrasonically welded aluminum/CFRP-joints is essential. Therefore in… More >

Damage Assessment in Pultruded GFRP with AE

    D. Crivelli1, M. Guagliano2, A. Monici3

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.8, No.2, pp. 177-192, 2012, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2012.008.177

Abstract Pultrusion is a process for manufacturing uniform section composite profiles, which allows to obtain structural elements of virtually any length. The use of E-glass fiber allows to obtain a material with a good rigidity-to-weight and strength-to-weight ratio; these features allowed to use these materials in civil structures, such as poles for anti-noise panels and public lighting, also thanks to their insulating properties. However, the knowledge on the damage development of these materials is still uncertain, and this is slowing down their development.
For these reasons, an experimental study on pultruded materials aimed at identifying the damage modes has been developed.… More >

    F. Caputo, G. Lamanna, A. Soprano1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 283-296, 2011, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2011.007.283

Abstract The present paper deals with a numerical investigation on hybrid bolted joints between unidirectional, quasi isotropic Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) composite and aluminium alloy plates, subjected to traction loads. CFRP composite materials are widely used in aerospace applications, where requirements of weight reduction and structural high performances are very compelling. Composite materials generally present high resistance to fatigue and corrosion but the presence of joints in the structure can cause structural problems and then decrease the structural reliability of jointed component.
A hybrid bolted joint constituted of a metal plate, made of aluminium alloy, and a carbon fiber reinforced… More >

    G. Milani1, T. Rotunno2, E. Sacco3, A. Tralli1,4

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.2, No.1, pp. 29-50, 2006, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2006.002.029

Abstract Aim of the present work is the evaluation of the ultimate load bearing capacity of masonry panels reinforced with FRP strips. The investigation is developed performing both experimental and numerical studies. In particular, several panels subjected to different loading conditions are tested in the Tests Laboratory of the University of Florence (Italy). Then, numerical models based on combined homogenization and limit analysis techniques are proposed. The results obtained by numerical simulations are compared with experimental data. The good agreement obtained shows that the proposed numerical model can be applied for the evaluation of the ultimate load bearing capacity of reinforced… More >
