The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.4, pp. 87-94, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.087

Abstract This paper concentrates on the development and evaluation of linear characteristics of a complex flexure hinge with high accuracy and large stiffness. The flexure hinge mechanism is used to clamp the shaft of a micropositioning stage based on the inchworm principle. Six key parameters of the flexure hinge are optimized by using finite element method. Developed flexure hinge has very good effects on the clamping and resilience that are accurate and reasonable. The evaluation result shows that the flexure hinge has excellent linear characteristic. More >

Abstract The purpose of this work is to study the transient hydroplaning behavior of inflated pneumatic 195/65R15 radial tires with various tread patterns and the tires were loaded with a quarter car weight. The tires were analyzed numerically to roll over a water film with a thickness of 5 mm, 10 mm and 15 mm on top of a flat-road pavement. Current tire structure contains the outer rubber tread and the inner advanced reinforcing composite layers. The Mooney-Rivlin constitutive law and the classical laminated theory (CLT) were used to describe the behavior of the large-deformable rubber… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.4, pp. 247-262, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.247

Abstract Mechanical properties of materials in the micro- and nano-meter scale have been successfully obtained by using the indentation technique. Up to now, large-scale atomistic models to simulate the experimental condition, however, still remain computationally demanding. In this article, a simple and accurate method is proposed to derive the intermolecular potential functions of coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) suitable for various single crystalline materials. This CGMD technique is then provided to simulate nano-indentation process to verify its accuracy and reliability. Simulation results evaluated by CGMD approach are obtained and compared to those predicted by MD. It is More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 45-56, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.045

Abstract The interest in finite element method (FEM) concerning biomechanics has been increasing, in particular, to analyze the mechanical behavior of the human ear. In this work, a finite element model of the middle ear was made. A dynamic study based on a structural response to harmonic vibrations, for different sound pressure levels, applied on the eardrum, is presented using the ABAQUS program. The model includes different ligaments and muscle tendons with elastic and hyperelastic behavior of these supportive structure. The non-linear behavior of the ligaments and muscle tendons was considered, being the connection between ossicles More >

Determination of response spectrum of a linear time invariant gyroscopic system to random excitations using finite element method

    Sibi Chacko1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 33-44, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.033

Abstract In this work, dynamic analysis of a compliant shaft while it rotates about its axis has been carried out using Finite Element Method. This system is linear time invariant gyroscopic system. The governing equations are formulated for the shaft supported at both ends. Both ends of the shaft are supported to allow rotations by constraining all degrees of freedom, except axial rotations. The shaft is modeled using beam elements, with six degrees of freedom at the nodes. The effect of rotation on displacements is analysed by assessing the total kinetic energy and potential energy. Convectively Unstable Anti-Symmetric Waves in Flows Past Bluff Bodies

    Bhaskar Kumar1, Sanjay Mittal1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.53, No.2, pp. 95-122, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.053.095

Abstract The steady flow past a circular cylinder is investigated. Symmetry conditions are imposed along the centerline of the flow field. The variation of the structure of the recirculation zone with the Reynolds number is studied. The effect of the location of lateral boundary on the flow is analyzed and compared with results from earlier studies. The eddy length varies linearly with Re. Three kinds of solutions, based on eddy structure, are found for different location of the lateral boundary. Global linear stability analysis has been carried out in a translating frame to determine the convective… More >

Development of a Numerical Toolbox for the Computer Aided Design of Composite Over-Wrapped Pressure Vessels

    Eugenio Brusa1, Matteo Nobile2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.48, No.2, pp. 155-190, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.048.155

Abstract Lightness of high pressure vessels is currently assured by composite materials. Construction of over-wrapped composite pressure vessels with inner metallic liner is for instance compatible with standards requirements of the hydrogen technology of energy storage. Therefore a typical layout manufactured by some industries consists of a cylindrical vessel with covering of carbon-epoxy laminates and metallic impermeable liner. To allow the filament winding of the composite fibres are used hoop and helical layers, respectively. A single nozzle is usually built. It requires that the vessel material is reinforced. This need imposes to have a variable thickness… More >

Compact Modelling of Electric Arc Furnace Electrodes for Vibration Analysis, Detection and Suppression

    E. Brusa1, E. Franceschinis2, S. Morsut2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 75-106, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.075

Abstract Electrodes motion and positioning are critical issues of the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) operation in steelmaking process. During the melting process electrode is exposed to some impulsive and harmonic forces, superimposing to the structure's static loading. Unfortunately, structural vibration may interact with the electric arc regulation, because of the dynamic resonance. Instability in the furnace power supplying and dangerous electrode breakage may occur as a consequence of those dynamic effects. In this paper the dynamic behaviour of a real EAF structure is discussed and some numerical models are proposed. Available experimental data, collected by a… More >

    V. Minutolo1, E. Ruocco1, S. Ciaramella1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.41, No.1, pp. 27-48, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.041.027

Abstract A Field Boundary Element Method (FBEM) for Functionally Graded Materials (FGM) is presented and compared with Isoparametric Finite Element Method. The presented formulation, using the Kelvin's fundamental solution, is able to analyse structures although no fundamental solution is actually known. Isoparametric FGM Finite Element Method is a well established tool for FGM structural analysis. The comparison shows that both FBEM and FEM give accurate results. In the paper, the solution of some examples for 2D plates are reported both using FEM and FBEM. Some comparisons with analytical results are discussed and accuracy of the solutions More >

    A. Takei1, S. Yoshimura1, H. Kanayama2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 63-82, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.040.063

Abstract This paper describes a large-scale finite element analysis (FEA) for a high-frequency electromagnetic field of Maxwell equations including the displacement current. A stationary Helmholtz equation for the high-frequency electromagnetic field analysis is solved by considering an electric field and an electric scalar potential as unknown functions. To speed up the analysis, the hierarchical domain decomposition method (HDDM) is employed as a parallel solver. In this study, the Parent-Only type (Parallel processor mode: P-mode) of the HDDM is employed. In the P-mode, Parent processors perform the entire FEA. In this mode, all CPUs can be used More >
