    F Gentil1, RM Natal Jorge2,3, AJM Ferreira4, MPL Parente2,5, PALS Martins2,6, E Almeida7

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.8, No.4, pp. 145-150, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.008.145

Abstract The ear can be divided anatomically, into three parts: external, middle, and inner ear. The eardrum separates the external from the middle ear. The perforation of the eardrum can result in conductive moderate hearing loss. More >

Tire Standing Wave Simulation by 3-D Explicit Finite Element Method

    Jung-Chul An1, Jin-Rae Cho1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.7, No.3, pp. 123-128, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.007.123

Abstract Tire standing wave is one of the crucial factors that may lead to unexpected tire structural failure because the total strain energy of the tire dramatically increases when it occurs. However, its analytical analysis has been limited owing not only to the complicated tire structure and material composition, but also to the problem nonlinearity. In this paper, its characteristics are numerically investigated with the help of the transient dynamic rolling analysis of the 3-D patterned tire model. More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 211-238, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.005.211

Abstract In this paper, a combined formulation of the Finite Volume Method (FVM) and the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) is investigated to solve elasto-static problem. Accuracy and computational efficiency study between the combined formulation and the Finite Element Method (FEM) is presented. Some problems of beam under various loading and boundary conditions are analyzed by the proposed method, and the numerical results are compared with analytical solution and result of other numerical method which is obtained by well-known FEM software ABAQUS. The advantages of the FVM combined MLPG (FVMLPG) with respect to the FEM are illustrated. More >

Computational Flow Simulations around Circular Cylinders Using a Finite Element Method

    Kazuhiko Kakuda1, Masayuki Sakai1, Shinichiro Miura2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 199-204, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.005.199

Abstract The applications of a finite element scheme to three-dimensional incompressible viscous fluid flows around circular cylinders are presented. The scheme is based on the Petrov-Galerkin weak formulation with exponential weighting functions. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are numerically integrated in time by using a fractional step strategy with second-order accurate Adams-Bashforth scheme for both advection and diffusion terms. Numerical solutions for flow around a circular cylinder are presented. The parallelization and the performance of the present scheme are also checked. More >

    Dongjie Liu1, Dehao Yu2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.37, No.3, pp. 305-330, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.037.305

Abstract The coupling method of natural boundary element and mixed finite element is applied to analyze the stationary Navier-Stokes equation in 2-D unbounded domains. After an artificial smooth boundary is introduced, the original nonlinear problem is reduced into an equivalent problem defined in bounded computational domain. The well-posedness of the reduced problem is proved. The finite element approximation of this problem is given, and numerical example is provided to show the feasibility and efficiency of the method. CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 23-42, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.036.023

Abstract In this paper a Hierarchical approach for the analysis of advanced aerospace structures is presented. The proposed Global/Local model uses two kind of numerical methods. The first step of the Hierarchical procedure is performed by the Finite Element code Patran/Nastran\texttrademark , using a coarse mesh to study the global structure, then the local region is analyzed by using a Boundary Element code based on the multidomain anisotropic technique. This code accurately predicts stress concentrations at crack tips with a reduction of the modeling efforts and of the computational time. The Global/Local interface code implemented allows More >

The Artificial Boundary Method for a Nonlinear Interface Problem on Unbounded Domain

    De-hao Yu1 ,Hong-ying Huang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.35, No.3, pp. 227-252, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.035.227

Abstract In this paper, we apply the artificial boundary method to solve a three-dimensional nonlinear interface problem on an unbounded domain. A spherical or ellipsoidal surface as the artificial boundary is introduced. The exact artificial boundary conditions are derived explicitly in terms of an infinite series and then the well-posedness of the coupled weak formulation in a bounded domain, which is equivalent to the original problem in the unbounded domain, is obtained. The error estimate depends on the mesh size, the term after truncating the infinite series and the location of the artificial boundary. Some numerical More >

    Maenghyo Cho1, Jinbok Choi2, Hee Yuel Roh3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.33, No.1, pp. 17-48, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.033.017

Abstract The framework for the linkage between geometric modeling and an analysis based on the NURBS technology is developed in this study. In the present study, The NURBS surfaces were generated by interpolating a given set of data points or by extracting the necessary information to construct the NURBS surface from the IGES format file which was generated by the commercial CAD systems. Numerical examples showed the rate of displacement convergence for the various parameter-izations of the NURBS surface. Quadric surface, which is generated exactly by NURBS representation, was considered. One of the important advantages of More >

    O.O. Oyekoya, D.U. Mba1, A.M. El-Zafrany

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.34, No.1, pp. 55-86, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.034.055

Abstract In this paper, two new Mindlin-type plate bending elements have been derived for the modelling of functionally graded plate subjected to various loading conditions such as tensile loading, in-plane bending and out-of-plane bending. The properties of the first Mindlin-type element (i.e. Average Mindlin-type element) are computed by using an average fibre distribution technique which averages the macro-mechanical properties over each element. The properties of the second Mindlin-type element (i.e. Smooth Mindlin-type element) are computed by using a smooth fibre distribution technique, which directly uses the macro-mechanical properties at Gaussian quadrature points of each element. Segmentation and Simulation of Objects Represented in Images using Physical Principles

    Patrícia C.T. Gonçalves1,2, João Manuel R.S. Tavares1,2, R.M. Natal Jorge1,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.32, No.1, pp. 45-56, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.032.045

Abstract The main goals of the present work are to automatically extract the contour of an object and to simulate its deformation using a physical approach. In this work, to segment an object represented in an image, an initial contour is manually defined for it that will then automatically evolve until it reaches the border of the desired object. In this approach, the contour is modelled by a physical formulation using the finite element method, and its temporal evolution to the desired final contour is driven by internal and external forces. The internal forces are defined… More >
