    S.R.K Vedula1, T.S. Lim2, W. Hunziker3, C.T. Lim1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 29-30, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.013.029

Abstract The structural integrity as well as the regulation of paracellular diffusion of solutes across epithelial monolayers is critically regulated by the intercellular adhesion complex. The intercellular adhesion complex consists of a variety of proteins that perform different physiological functions. While proteins localizing at adherens junctions (nectins and e-cadherins) are important for initiating and stabilizing cell adhesion, proteins localizing at the tight junctions (occludin, claudins and junctional adhesion molecules) act as gates to regulate the diffusion of solutes across the epithelial monolayer. Despite significant advancement in the understanding of the biological roles of these cell adhesion More >

    Eun A Hwang1, Haeng-Ki Lee1, Jong Won Kwark2, Jung Woo Lee2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 11-12, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.012.011

Abstract Concrete structures such as concrete safety barriers are often subjected to direct impact loads mainly due to vehicle crash impact. In this case, the impact resistance is one of the most critical characteristic of concrete used in such structures. The present study aims to characterize the impact resistance of lightweight aggregate cellular concrete (LACC), which will be used in concrete barriers. Impact tests on LACC specimens were carried out based on the repeated drop-weight impact test guideline recommend by ACI committee 544. Impact resistance and compressive strength of the LACC specimens were characterized and the More >

Youngmin Lee, Jae Shin Park, Seyoung Im

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.10, No.2, pp. 51-52, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.010.051

Abstract We study energetics and mobility of dislocations in silicon crystal in atomistic scale. The electronic structure of silicon affects its dynamics, so that it is analyzed with tight-binding method for high accuracy, emerged as a useful method for studying structural and dynamical properties of covalent systems. The tight biding potential used for silicon crystalline is the one of GSP known as a transferable potential. Due to the nature of rare events, the analysis is executed by action-derived molecular dynamics (ADMD) calculations. The changes of the system energy due to dislocation glide are explored with a More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.9, No.3, pp. 199-200, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.009.199

Abstract The purpose of this study is to present the process of development of HID (High Intensity Discharge) light reflector of a streetlight. The new application of HID light source for streetlight product is proposed in this study, the advantages of HID include low power consumption and single point light source emitting. The study includes the introduction of HID streetlight structure, the lighting efficiency comparison of various light sources (ex. High Pressure Sodium-lamp ``HPS'', High Bright LED ``HB LED'', etc\ldots ), and the design of streetlight reflector. The emphases of the experiment are focused at light… More >

A Computational Fluid Dynamics Study of a 2D Airfoil in Hovering Flight Under Ground Effect

    J.M.C.Pereira1, N.A.R.Maia1, J.C.F.Pereira1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.49, No.2, pp. 113-142, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.049.113

Abstract We present a 2D incompressible Navier-Stokes numerical simulation of a virtual model of an elliptic, or flat plate, foil in hovering flight configuration. Computations obtained with a general purpose solver were validated against reference data on forward flapping flight, normal or dragonfly hovering. The moving mesh technique allows airfoil translation and angular mesh movement accompaining the airfoil stroke motion. Close to the ground the mesh deforms to occupy the narrow computational domain formed between the airfoil and the ground. Computations have been carried out for some parameters, including the distances h between the foil center and… More >

An investigation on the regularized meshless method for irregular domain problems

    Rencheng Song1,2, Wen Chen2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.1, pp. 59-70, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.059

Abstract The regularized meshless method (RMM) is a novel boundary-type meshless method but by now has mainly been tested successfully to the regular domain problems in reports. This note makes a further investigation on its solution of irregular domain problems. We find that the method fails to produce satisfactory results for some benchmark problems. The reason is due to the inaccurate calculation of the diagonal elements of the numerical discretization matrix in the original RMM, which have strong effect on the resulting solution accuracy. To overcome this severe drawback, this study introduces the weighted diagonal element More >

Straightening out Peyronie’s: a medical and surgical approach to the patient

    J. C. Trussell, James C. Brien

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.15, No.3, pp. 4047-4055, 2008

Abstract Purpose: Peyronie's disease is characterized by plaque formation within the tunica albuginea of the penile corpora cavernosa. The exact etiology of Peyronie's is uncertain at this time, and multiple treatment options exist. Following a literature review, a treatment algorithm has been developed to streamline decisions for both medical and surgical intervention.
Methods: A review of the Medline literature published between 1940 and 2008 was performed looking at the history, pathophysiology, medical and surgical treatments for Peyronie's disease.
Results: The current standard is to treat Peyronie's with expectant medical management or by adding oral, topical, or injected medicines to… More >

    Giulietti1 AL, OM Ruiz1, HE Pedranzani1, O Terenti1,2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.77, pp. 137-149, 2008, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2008.77.137

Abstract In this paper, the effects of four vermicomposts are analyzed on a variety of growth and development parameters of Digitaria eriantha cv. Mejorada INTA. The vermicomposts used originated from cow, horse, goat and hen feaces combined with pure soil in the following proportions: T1: 0% worm humus + 100% soil; T2: 50% worm humus + 50% soil, and T3: 100% worm humus + 0% soil. Digitaria eriantha seeds were sown in trays which were kept under controlled light and moisture conditions. After the third week of treatment, the number of germinated seeds, and both leaf and More >

Effects of Different Weight Functions on Convergent Property of SFDI

    Q.W. Ma1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 1-6, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.005.001

Abstract In the MLPG_R (Meshless Local Petrove-Galerkin based on Rankine source solution) method, one needs a meshless interpolation scheme for an unknown function to discretise the governing equation. A new scheme, called simplified finite difference interpolation (SFDI) has been recently devised by the author, which is more efficient and has better convergent property than others. This paper will discuss about how the convergent property is affected by different weight functions. More >
