    Abstract This paper investigates some practical aspects related to the use of the Theory of Critical Distances (TCD) when employed to estimate notch fatigue limits. The accuracy of different formalisations of the theory was checked by using experimental data taken from the literature. This exercise allowed us to confirm that the simplest formalisation of the TCD, in which both critical distance and critical stress are material constants [1], is also the most accurate one, giving predictions falling within an error interval of about ±20%.     Abstract The level set method is a numerical technique for simulating moving interfaces. In this paper, an unconditionally BIBO (Bounded-Input-Bounded-Output) time-stable consistent meshfree level set method is proposed and applied as a more effective approach to simultaneous shape and topology optimization. In the present level set method, the meshfree infinitely smooth inverse multiquadric Radial Basis Functions (RBFs) are employed to discretize the implicit level set function.     Abstract Composite materials have complicated microstructures. These microstructures affect the macroscopic deformation of composite materials. In the present study, we focus on the effect of particle size in a particle-dispersed composite material on the mechanical strength of the material. For this purpose, we derived a macroscopic elastic-plastic constitutive equation using a modified version of the Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method combined with the gradient plasticity.     Abstract The vanadium is a metal that presents great interest from the toxicological point of view, because of the numerous alterations that can take place in different biological systems.     Abstract The biological efficiency of five stocks of Bacillus subtilis, of the mixture of the bioproducts quitosan and Larrea tridentata extract, and five synthetic fungicides were evaluated against the fungus Alternaria dauci Kühn in laboratory and greenhouse experiments. The effect of these compounds on growth and yield of carrot was also determined.
