Flutter of Thermally Buckled Composite Sandwich Plates

    Le-Chung Shiau1, Shih-Yao Kuo2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.3, pp. 213-222, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.213

Abstract A high precision high order triangular plate element is developed for the linear flutter analysis of thermally buckled composite sandwich plates. Due to uneven thermal expansion in the two local material directions, the buckling mode of the plate may be shifted from one pattern to another for certain fiber orientation or plate aspect ratio as the aerodynamic pressure is present. This buckle pattern change alters the frequencies and modes of the plate and that in turn changes the flutter coalescent modes. Numerical results show that temperature has a destabilizing effect on the flutter boundary but More >

Synthetic chemokines directly labeled with a fluorescent dye as tools for studying chemokine and chemokine receptor interactions

    Andrew E. Strong1, Anne-Christine Thierry2, Pascal Cousin3, Corinne Moulon4, Stéphane Demotz5

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.17, No.1, pp. 49-59, 2006

Abstract Chemokines constitute a protein family that exhibit a variety of biological activities involved in normal and pathological physiological processes. CCL11 (eotaxin), CCL19 (MIP-3b), CCL22 (MDC), CXCL11 (I-TAC) and CXCL12 (SDF-1a) chemokines, modified with the Alexa Fluor® 647 fluorescent dye at specific positions along their sequence, were produced by a chemical route and their biological activities were characterized. In a migration assay, fluorescent chemokines were as biologically active as the unmodified forms. All labeled chemokines specifically stained cell lines transfected with the appropriate human chemokine receptors. The specificity of binding was further established by showing that the… More >

Therapeutic approach to hormone-refractory prostate cancer

Fred Saad, Abdulhadi Al Dejmah, Paul Perrotte, Michael McCormack, François Bénard, Luc Valiquette, Pierre I. Karakiewicz

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, Suppl.2, pp. 52-56, 2006

Abstract Over 60 years ago, Huggins and Hodges discovered androgen deprivation as an effective first-line therapy for metastatic prostate cancer. This leads to significant cancer control but in almost all men prostate cancer ultimately progresses to a hormone-refractory (HRPC) state resulting in significant morbidity and eventual death. In 2004, two landmark studies using docetaxel based chemotherapy demonstrated, for the first time, a survival advantage in HRPC. This has set a new standard of care for this disease. In addition, treatment with the bisphosphonate zoledronic acid has been shown to significantly reduce bone complications in metastatic HRPC. More >

    Deb Feldman-Stewart1,2, Michael D. Brundage1,2,3, Rob Siemens4, David Skarsgard5

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.13, No.6, pp. 3321-3326, 2006

Abstract Purpose: To compare the helpfulness of two educational aids or booklets on early-stage prostate cancer.
Method: Participating consecutive patients and a family member, in three centres, received one of two booklets, one produced by AstraZeneca (AZ), the other produced by us (CCE); the patient and family shared a booklet but were separate study participants. The primary outcome was the Purpose-based Information Assessment completed after participants read their booklet; they rated the importance (4-point Likert scale) of six potential purposes for the information: to help organize their thoughts, understand their situations, decide on treatment, plan, provide emotional support… More >

Numerical Evaluation of T-stress Solutions for Cracks in Plane Anisotropic Bodies

    P.D. Shah1, Ch. Song2, C.L. Tan1, X. Wang1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.2, No.4, pp. 225-238, 2006, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2006.002.225

Abstract Numerical T-stress solutions in two dimensional anisotropic cracked bodies are very scarce in the literature. Schemes to evaluate this fracture parameter in anisotropy have been reported only fairly recently. Among them are those developed in conjunction with two different computational techniques, namely, the Boundary Element Method (BEM) and the Scaled Boundary Finite-Element Method (SBFEM). This paper provides a review of the respective schemes using these techniques and demonstrates their efficacy with three examples. These examples, which are of engineering importance, involve cracks lying in a homogeneous medium as well as at the interface between dissimilar media. More >

Analysis and Optimization of Dynamically Loaded Reinforced Plates by the Coupled Boundary and Finite Element Method

    P. Fedelinski1, R. Gorski1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.15, No.1, pp. 31-40, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.015.031

Abstract The aim of the present work is to analyze and optimize plates in plane strain or stress with stiffeners subjected to dynamic loads. The reinforced structures are analyzed using the coupled boundary and finite element method. The plates are modeled using the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DR-BEM) and the stiffeners using the finite element method (FEM). The matrix equations of motion are formulated for the plate and stiffeners. The equations are coupled using conditions of compatibility of displacements and equilibrium of tractions along the interfaces between the plate and stiffeners. The final set of… More >

Modulation of the Self-assembled Structure of Biomolecules: Coarse Grained Molecular Dynamics Simulation

    Baohua Ji*, Yonggang Huang

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.3, No.3, pp. 109-120, 2006, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2006.003.109

Abstract The mechanisms governing the self-assembled structure of biomolecules (single chain and bundle of chains) are studied with an AB copolymer model via the coarse grained molecular dynamics simulations. Non-local hydrophobic interaction is found to play a critical role in the pattern formation of the assembled structure of polymer chains. We show that the polymer structure could be controlled by adjusting the balance between local (short range) and non-local (long range) hydrophobic interaction which are influenced by various factors such as the sequences, chain length, stiffness, confinement, and the topology of polymers. In addition, the competition More >

Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin Method for Linear Coupled Thermoelastic Analysis

    J. Sladek1, V. Sladek1, Ch. Zhang2, C.L. Tan3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 57-68, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.016.057

Abstract The Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method for linear transient coupled thermoelastic analysis is presented. Orthotropic material properties are considered here. A Heaviside step function as the test functions is applied in the weak-form to derive local integral equations for solving two-dimensional (2-D) problems. In transient coupled thermoelasticity an inertial term appears in the equations of motion. The second governing equation derived from the energy balance in coupled thermoelasticity has a diffusive character. To eliminate the time-dependence in these equations, the Laplace-transform technique is applied to both of them. Local integral equations are written on small More >

Analysis of Partially Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Columns subjected to Cyclic Loadings

    T. Ishizawa1, M. Iura1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 121-130, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.011.121

Abstract A one-dimensional model is proposed for numerical analysis of partially concrete-filled steel tubular (PCFST) columns subjected to cyclic loadings. The present formulation does not require experimental results nor shell analysis to obtain the constitutive equation of the model. The material properties and dimensions of PCFST columns are required for numerical analysis of the present model. The PCFST columns are assumed to consist of elastic beam and base plastic-hinge region in which steel local buckling is observed. Two parameters are introduced in order to express hardening phenomena of PCFST columns subjected to cyclic loading. Resisting forces More >

The Bauschinger Effect's Impact on the 3-D Combined SIFs for Radially Cracked Fully or Partially Autofrettaged Thick-Walled Cylinders

    M. Perl1, C. Levy 2, V. Rallabhandy 2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 37-48, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.011.037

Abstract The Bauschinger Effect (BE) impact on KIN– the combined, Mode I, 3-D Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) distributions for arrays of radial, internal, surface cracks emanating from the bore of a fully or partially autofrettaged thick-walled cylinder is investigated. A in-depth comparison between the combined SIFs for a “realistic” - Bauschinger Effect Dependent Autofrettage (BEDA) and those for an “ideal” - Bauschinger Effect Independent Autofrettage (BEIA) is performed. The 3- D finite element (FE) analysis is performed employing the submodeling technique and singular elements along the crack front. Both autofrettage residual stress fields, BEDA and BEIA, are… More >
