On Axisymmetric Longitudinal Wave Propagation in Double-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    S.D. Akbarov1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.33, No.1, pp. 63-85, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.033.063

Abstract An attempt is made into the investigation of longitudinal axisymmetric wave propagation in the DWCNT with the use of the exact equations of motion of the linear theory of elastodynamics. The DWCNT is modeled as concentricallynested two circular hollow cylinders between which there is free space. The difference in the radial displacements of these cylinders is coupled with the van der Waals forces and it is assumed that full slipping conditions occur on the inner surface of the outer tube and on the outer surface of the inner tube. Pradeep M Kamath1, C Balaji 2, S P Venkateshan1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.9, No.2, pp. 111-126, 2013, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2013.009.111

Abstract This paper reports the results of an experimental study on the enhancement in the heat transfer from a heated aluminium plate placed in a vertical channeland filled with an aluminium metal foam. Hydrodynamic and heat transfer experiments have been conducted for different foam thicknesses. The results of the hy-drodynamic experiments show no significant variation in the pressure drop with anincrease in the foam thickness. However, an increase in the foam thickness contributes an average heat transfer enhancement of 2 to 4 times over an empty channelfor the same Reynolds number. Correlations for Nusselt number are More >

    E. Tombarević1, V. R. Voller2, I. Vušanović1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.96, No.1, pp. 1-29, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.096.001

Abstract The Control Volume Finite Element Method (CVFEM) combines the geometric flexibility of the Finite Element Method (FEM) with the physical intuition of the Control Volume Method (CVM). These two features of the CVFEM make it a very powerful tool for solving heat and fluid flow problems within complex domain geometries. In solving problems in the two-dimensional domains the development of the CVFEM has been well documented. For the three-dimensional problems, while there is extensive reporting on the details of the numerical approximation, there is relatively sparse information on important issues related to data structure and More >

Creep of Concrete Core and Time-Dependent Non-Linear Behaviour and Buckling of Shallow Concrete-Filled Steel Tubular Arches

    K. Luo1, Y. L. Pi1, W. Gao1, M. A. Bradford1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.95, No.1, pp. 31-58, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.095.031

Abstract This paper presents a theoretical analysis for the time-dependent nonlinear behaviour and buckling of shallow concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) arches under a sustained central concentrated load. The virtual work method is used to establish the differential equations of equilibrium for the time-dependent behaviour and buckling analyses of shallow CFST arches, and the age-adjusted effective modulus method is adopted to model the creep behaviour of the concrete core. Analytical solutions of time-dependent displacements and internal forces of shallow CFST arches are derived. It has been found that under a sustained central concentrated load, the deformations and… More >

    F. Freschi1, L. Giaccone1, M. Repetto1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.94, No.5, pp. 371-395, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.094.371

Abstract The study of induction heating systems from the electromagnetic point of view is still a challenging task for several reasons: the problem under analysis is strictly multiphysics because it involves the coupled electromagnetic and thermal phenomena; both coupled physics have nonlinear behavior; nonlinearities are of different kinds, both depending on the single phenomenon and on the coupling terms. The aim of the paper is to show that the cell method, based on the use of Tonti diagrams, can handle efficiently this kind of problems. The proposed magneto-thermal numerical procedure is firstly described in its theoretical More >

On Macroscopic Behaviors of Shape Memory Alloy Thick-walled Cylinder Under Combined Internal Pressure and Radial Temperature Gradient

    Bingfei Liu1, Guansuo Dui2,3, Lijun Xue2, Benming Xie1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.94, No.3, pp. 239-260, 2013, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2013.094.239

Abstract Analytical solutions are derived for the macroscopic behaviors of a Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) thick-walled cylinder subjected to internal pressure and radial temperature gradient. The Tresca transformation criterion and linear hardening are used. Equations are given for the radial and circumferential stresses, transformation strains and martensite volume fractions at both the elastic step and the transformation step. Numerical results are presented and in good agreement with the finite element simulations. More >

A Coupled BEM-MLPG Technique for the Thermal Analysis of Non-Homogeneous Media

    A. Tadeu1, P. Stanak2, J. Sladek2, V. Sladek2, J. Prata1, N. Simões1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.93, No.6, pp. 489-516, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.093.489

Abstract This paper presents a technique that couples the boundary element method (BEM) with the meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method, formulated in the frequency domain. It is then used to study the transient heat diffusion through a two-dimensional unbounded medium containing confined subdomains where the material properties vary from point to point. To exploit the advantages of each method, the BEM is used for the homogeneous unbounded domain and the MLPG method is used for the non-homogeneous confined subdomains. The nodal points placed at the interface between the confined subdomains and the unbounded homogenous medium are… More >

Parameter Sensitivity and Probabilistic Analysis of the Elastic Homogenized Properties for Rubber Filled Polymers

    Marcin Kamiński1,2, Bernd Lauke2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.93, No.6, pp. 411-440, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.093.411

Abstract The main aim in this paper is a computational study devoted to the sensitivity gradients and probabilistic moments of the effective elastic parameters for the rubber-filled polymers. The methodology is based on least squares recovery of the polynomial functions relating the effective tensor components and the given input design/random parameters. All numerical experiments are provided with respect to Young’s moduli of the elastomer constituents. Computational analysis is possible thanks to the application of the Response Function Method, which is enriched in our approach with the weighting procedures implemented according to the Dirac-type distributions. The homogenized… More >

Coupled PIEM/FEM Algorithm Based on Mindlin-Reissner Plate Theory for Bending Analysis of Plates with Through-Thickness Hole

    De-Shin Liu1, Chin-Yi Tu1, Cho-Liang Chung2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.92, No.6, pp. 573-594, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.092.573

Abstract The Infinite Element Method (IEM) is widely used for the analysis of elastostatic structures containing singularities. In the IEM method, the problem domain is partitioned into multiple element layers, where the stiffness matrix of each layer is similar to that of the other layers in the discretized domain. However, in Mindlin-Reissner plate theory, the stiffness matrix varies through the layers of the plate, and thus the conventional IEM algorithm cannot be applied. Accordingly, the present study proposes a Plate Infinite Element Method (PIEM) in which the element stiffness matrix is separated into two sub-matrices; each… More >

A Fully Coupled Model of Non-linearWave in a Harbor

    Daguo Wang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.91, No.4, pp. 289-312, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2013.091.289

Abstract A 2-D time-domain numerical coupled model for non-linear wave forces acting on a fixed ship is developed in the present study. The whole domain is divided into the inner domain and the outer domain. The inner domain is the area around the ship section and the flow is described by the Laplace equation. The remaining area is the outer domain and the flow is defined by the higher-order Boussinesq equations in order to consider the nonlinearity of the wave motions. The matching conditions on the interfaces between the inner domain and the outer domain are… More >
