On the Modelling of Rate-Dependent Domain Switching in Piezoelectric Materials under Superimposed Stresses

    A. Arockiarajan1, A. Menzel2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.19, No.2, pp. 163-178, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.019.163

Abstract To study rate-dependent properties of piezoelectric materials a micro-mechanically motivated model is applied in this work. The developed framework is embedded into a coupled three-dimensional finite element setting, whereby each element is assumed to represent one grain and, moreover, possesses a random initialisation of the underlying polarisation direction. Furthermore, an energy-based criterion is used for the initiation of the onset of domain switching and the subsequent propagation of domain wall motion during the switching process is modelled via a linear kinetics theory. The interaction between individual grains is thereby incorporated by means of a probabilistic More >

Buckling and Free Vibrations of Sandwich General shells of Revolution with Composite facings and Viscoelastic core under Thermal Environment using Semi-analytical Method

    Sharnappa1, N. Ganesan2, Raju Sethuraman3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.18, No.2, pp. 121-144, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.018.121

Abstract This article presents the study on buckling and free vibration behavior of sandwich general shells of revolution under thermal environment using Wilkins theory. The temperature assumes to be uniform over the shell structure. The numerical analysis is based on the semi-analytical finite element method applicable to thick shells. The analysis is carried out for different geometry such as truncated conical and hemispherical shells with various facing and core materials under clamped-clamped boundary condition. The parametric study is carried out for different core to facing (tc / tf) thickness ratio by considering the temperature dependent and independent More >

    Ehsan Jabbari1, Behrouz Gatmiri2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 31-44, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.018.031

Abstract In this paper after a discussion about the evolution of the unsaturated soils' governing differential equations and a brief history of the Green's functions for porous media, the governing equations, i.e., the mathematical model in the presence of heat effects are presented and simplified so as the derivation of the associated Green's functions be in the realm of possibility. The thermal two- and three-dimensional, full- and half-space Green's functions for unsaturated porous media, although in a relatively simplified form, are being introduced for the first time, following the previous works of the authors. The derived More >

The Moving Finite Element Method Based on Delaunay Automatic triangulation For Fracture Path Prediction Simulations In Nonlinear Elastic-Plastic Materials

    T. Nishioka1, Y. Kobayashi1, T. Fujimoto1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 231-238, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.017.231

Abstract First, for growing cracks in elastic-plastic materials, an incremental variational principle is developed to satisfy the boundary conditions near newly created crack surfaces. Then using this variational principle, a moving finite element method is formulated and developed, based on the Delaunay automatic triangulation. Furthermore, theoretical backgrounds on numerical prediction for fracture path of curving crack using T* integral are explained. Using the automatic moving finite element method, fracture-path prediction simulations are successfully carried out. More >

    Chun-Ying. Wu1, R. Al-Khoury2, C. Kasbergen2, Xue-Yan. Liu2, A. Scarpas2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 163-172, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.017.163

Abstract 3D spectral element method in the article is presented to predict the pavement layer modules using field measurement of Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD). To improve the computational efficiency of the layer-condition assessment, one type of spectral element is proposed to develop the dynamic analysis of 3D multi-layered system subjected to an impulsive load. Each layer in structure is simulated as two-noded layer spectral element or one-noded spectral element in frequency domain. In order to identify the parameters of layered structures, a nonlinear optimization method called Powell hybrid algorithm is employed. The optimization procedure is performed More >

Instabilities and Pattern Formation in Thermocapillary Liquid Pools

    U. Schoisswohl1, H. C. Kuhlmann2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.3, No.4, pp. 317-328, 2007, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2007.003.317

Abstract The flow in thermocapillary liquid pools heated or cooled from above can exhibit various flow patterns depending on the thermal conditions and the geometrical constraints. This pattern formation and the respective physical mechanisms are studied numerically by means of a linear-stability analysis. We focus on the transition from the steady axisymmetric to a three-dimensional flow. More >

Phase field models and Marangoni flows

    Rodica Borcia1,2, Michael Bestehorn2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.3, No.4, pp. 287-294, 2007, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2007.003.287

Abstract We developed a phase field model for Marangoni convection in compressible fluids of van der Waals type far from criticality. The theoretical description is based on the Navier-Stokes equation with extra terms responsible for describing the Marangoni effect, the classical heat equation, and the continuity equation. The model previously developed for a two-layer geometry is now extended to drops and bubbles. Finally, we report on 2D numerical simulations for drop Marangoni migration in a vertical temperature gradient. More >

A Unified Theory for Interphase Transport Phenomena with Interfacial Velocity and Surface Tension Gradients: Applications to Single Crystal Growth and Microgravity Sciences

    Akira Hirata1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.3, No.3, pp. 203-230, 2007, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2007.003.203

Abstract This article is a summary of author's typical research works (over the last four decades) on interphase transport phenomena in the presence of interfacial fluid motion and surface tension gradients on liquid-fluid interfaces, and related applications to single crystal growth and microgravity sciences. A unified theory for momentum, heat and mass transfer on liquid-fluid and solid-fluid interfaces is proposed, which takes into account interface mobility. It is shown that interface contamination and turbulence can be well explained, respectively, by suppression and enhancement of the interfacial velocity induced by surface tension gradients. Solid/Liquid Phase Change: Recent Studies and Models

    R. Prud’homme1, M. El Ganaoui2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 161-172, 2007, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2007.003.161

Abstract Some problems related to solid/liquid phase change are presented. Attention is focused on interface modeling for numerical analysis and one-dimensional directional growing and melting. Microgravity relevance of some situations is emphasized. It is shown, in particular, that in some circumstances melting is not the simple reversal of crystal growth due to some (still poorly known) phenomena (nucleation and growth of liquid droplets in the bulk, solid and liquid dendrites due to a morphological instability of the phase boundary). Relevant mathematical models are discussed and described (to a certain extent) for analysis and/or characterization of these More >

    H. Tang1, L.C. Wrobel2, Z. Fan2

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 129-146, 2007, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2007.003.129

Abstract This paper presents an overview of diverse extrusion techniques and, in particular, a focused discussion about the rheoextrusion process for semi-solid casting (a novel casting process for the fabrication of high quality metals). The review reveals a wealth of interesting rheological and microstructural features, illustrating qualitative and quantitative data. The analysis is supported by relevant numerical results and examples. It is shown how numerical studies can lead to significant insights into these processes by providing more detailed information on the fundamental mechanisms of morphology development (during phase change) and profile forming.
