Application of Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) to Problems with Singularities, and Material Discontinuities, in 3-D Elasticity

    Q. Li1, S. Shen1, Z. D. Han1, S. N. Atluri1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.5, pp. 571-586, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.571

Abstract In this paper, a truly meshless method, the Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Method, is developed for three-dimensional elasto-statics. The two simplest members of MLPG family of methods, the MLPG type 5 and MLPG type 2, are combined, in order to reduce the computational requirements and to obtain high efficiency. The MLPG5 method is applied at the nodes inside the 3-D domain, so that any domain integration is eliminated altogether, if no body forces are involved. The MLPG 2 method is applied at the nodes that are on the boundaries, and on the interfaces of material More >

Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Approaches for Solving the Weakly-Singular Traction & Displacement Boundary Integral Equations

    S. N. Atluri1, Z. D. Han1, S. Shen1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.5, pp. 507-518, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.507

Abstract The general Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) type weak-forms of the displacement & traction boundary integral equations are presented, for solids undergoing small deformations. These MLPG weak forms provide the most general basis for the numerical solution of the non-hyper-singular displacement and traction BIEs [given in Han, and Atluri (2003)], which are simply derived by using the gradients of the displacements of the fundamental solutions [Okada, Rajiyah, and Atluri (1989a,b)]. By employing the various types of test functions, in the MLPG-type weak-forms of the non-hyper-singular dBIE and tBIE over the local sub-boundary surfaces, several types of… More >

Variational Formulation and Symmetric Tangent Operator for Shells with Finite Rotation Field

    Yoshitaka Suetake1, Masashi Iura2, S. N. Atluri3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 329-336, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.329

Abstract The objective of this paper is to examine the symmetry of the tangent operator for nonlinear shell theories with the finite rotation field. As well known, it has been stated that since the rotation field carries the Lie group structure, not a vector space one, the tangent operator incorporating the rotation field does not become symmetric. In this paper, however, it is shown that by adopting a rotation vector as a variable, the symmetry can be achieved in the Lagrangean (material) description. First, we present a general concept for the problem. Next, we adopt the More >

A Conservative Time Integration Scheme for Dynamics of Elasto-damaged Thin Shells

    L. Briseghella1, C. Majorana1, P. Pavan1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 273-286, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.273

Abstract Some aspects of the application of a conservative time integration scheme to the non-linear dynamics of elasto-damaged thin shells are presented. The main characteristic of the scheme is to be conservative, in the sense that it allows the time-discrete system to preserve the basic laws of continuum, namely the balance of the linear and angular momenta as well as the fulfilment of the second law of thermodynamic. Here the method is applied to thin shells under large displacements and rotations. The constitutive model adopted is built coupling the linear elastic model of De Saint Venant-Kirchhoff More >

Finite Rotations and large Strains in Finite Element Shell Analysis

    Y. Başar, O. Kintzel1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.2, pp. 217-230, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.217

Abstract The objective of this contribution is the development of a finite element model for finite rotation and large strain analysis of thin walled shells involving geometry intersections. The shell configuration is described by a linear polynomial in the thickness coordinate. The director of the shell is multiplicatively decomposed into a stretching parameter and an inextensible unit vector whose rotation is accomplished by an updated-rotation formulation. A rotation vector with three independent components is used throughout the shell which permits advantageously to consider smooth shells and compound shells by a unified procedure. This formulation is introduced More >

A Boundary Element Method for Acoustic Scattering from Non-axisymmetric and Axisymmetric Elastic Shells

    J. P. Agnantiaris1, D. Polyzos1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 197-212, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.197

Abstract A Boundary Element Method (BEM), for the three-dimensional solution of both non-axisymmetric and axisymmetric coupled acoustic-elastic problems in the frequency domain, is presented. The present BEM makes use of the Burton and Miller integral equation for infinite acoustic spaces, while elastic structures are dealt with the standard boundary integral equation of elastodynamics. The axisymmetric formulation involves the use of the fast Fourier transform algorithm. Highly accurate numerical algorithms are used for the evaluation of singular integrals, while nearly singular integrals are treated, also with high accuracy, through the use of practical numerical techniques, for both More >

Analysis of Materials with Strain-Gradient Effects: A Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin(MLPG) Approach, with Nodal Displacements only

    Z.Tang, S. Shen, S.N. Atluri1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 177-196, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.177

Abstract A meshless numerical implementation is reported of the 2-D Fleck-Hutchinson phenomenological strain-gradient theory, which fits within the framework of the Toupin-Mindlin theories and deals with first-order strain gradients and the associated work-conjugate higher-order stresses. From a mathematical point of view, the two-dimensional Toupin-Mindlin strain gradient theory is a generalization of the Poisson-Kirchhoff plate theories, involving, in addition to the fourth-order derivatives of the displacements, also a second-order derivative. In the conventional displacement-based approaches in FEM, the interpolation of displacement requires C$^{1}$ --continuity (in order to ensure convergence of the finite element procedure for 4$^{th}$ order… More >

Performance Computations and Design Criterion of Airfoils in Unsteady Viscous Flows

    Rosario M. A. Marretta1, Giovanni Lombardi2, Roberto Antinoro1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.1, pp. 73-84, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.073

Abstract An approach based on Lighthill's transpiration velocity is explored and proposed for a new design criterion for airfoils in unsteady and viscous flows. This criterion confines its methodologies to the close proximity of the laminar and turbulent boundary layer and it shows good efficiency in predicting and calculating the wake evolution regions in a wide range of operating unsteady parameters. Also, the criterion is capable of predicting low Mach number, attached flow-fields as accurately as the full Navier-Stokes solutions when the massive flow separation is avoided. The agreement of the present results with those empirically More >

Mass spectral analysis of PC-SPES confirms the presence of diethylstilbestrol

    E. S. Guns1, S. L. Goldenberg1, P. N. Brown2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.9, No.6, pp. 1684-1688, 2002

Abstract Introduction/objectives: PC-SPES is an herbal mixture available over the counter for the treatment of prostate cancer. It was re-called in January 2002 due to alleged contamination with warfarin. Other laboratories, including our own, claim that the potent synthetic estrogen, diethylstilbestrol (DES) which has been used for many years to treat hormone dependent prostate cancer, could be detected in the herbal mixture. Recent clinical studies report objective responses in men with hormone dependent and naive prostate cancer, and also describe isolated cases of estrogenic side effects. A lack of effective conventional treatments for advanced hormone refractory prostate… More >
