    C.C. Chia1, S.G. Jang1, J.R. Lee2, D.J. Yoon2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 29-30, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.011.029

Abstract An ultrasonic propagation imaging (UPI) system consisted of a Q-switched Nd-YAG pulsed laser with 20 Hz-repetition rate and a motorized tilting mirror system for rapid scanning of target was developed. The system which requires neither reference data nor fixed focal length could be used for health monitoring of curved structures. If combined with a fiber acoustic wave PZT (FAWPZT) sensor, it could be used to perform inspection on hot target structures, which present formidable challenges to the usage of contact piezoelectric transducers mainly due to the Curie temperature limitation of transducers and debonding problem due… More >

A Unified Approach to Numerical Modeling of Fully and Partially Saturated Porous Materials by Considering Air Dissolved in Water

    D. Gawin1, L. Sanavia2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.53, No.3, pp. 255-302, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.053.255

Abstract This paper presents a unified mathematical approach to model the hydro-thermo-mechanical behavior of saturated and partially saturated porous media by considering the effects of air dissolved in liquid water. The model equations are discretized by means of the Finite Element method. A correspondingly updated code is used to analyze two examples; the first one is the well known Liakopoulos test, i.e. the drainage of liquid water from a 1m column of sand, which is used to validate numerically the model here developed. As second example, a biaxial compression test of undrained dense sands where cavitation More >

A Discrete Fourier Transform Framework for Localization Relations

    D.T. Fullwood1, S.R. Kalidindi2, B.L. Adams1, S. Ahmadi1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 25-40, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.009.025

Abstract Localization relations arise naturally in the formulation of multi-scale models. They facilitate statistical analysis of local phenomena that may contribute to failure related properties. The computational burden of dealing with such relations is high and recent work has focused on spectral methods to provide more efficient models. Issues with the inherent integrations in the framework have led to a tendency towards calibration-based approaches. In this paper a discrete Fourier transform framework is introduced, leading to an extremely efficient basis for the localization relations. Previous issues with the Green's function integrals are resolved, and the method More >

Study on Band Gaps and Localization Phenomenon in 2D Ordered and Randomly Disordered Phononic Crystals

    A.L. Chen, Y.S. Wang1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.5, No.4, pp. 239-244, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.005.239

Abstract Band gaps and localization phenomenon for both in-plane and anti-plane elastic waves propagating in 2D ordered and disordered phononic crystals are studied in this paper. The localization of wave propagation due to random disorder is discussed by introducing the concept of the localization factor which is calculated by the plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method. P. Le1, N. Mai-Duy2, T. Tran-Cong3, G. Baker4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 43-68, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.025.043

Abstract This paper describes an integrated radial basis function network (IRBFN) method for the numerical modelling of the dynamics of strain localization due to strain softening in quasi-brittle materials. The IRBFN method is a truly meshless method that is based on an unstructured point collocation procedure. We introduce a new and effective regularization method to enhance the performance of the IRBFN method and alleviate the numerical oscillations associated with weak discontinuity at the elastic wave front. The dynamic response of a one dimensional bar is investigated using both local and non-local continuum models. Numerical results, which More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 23-31, 2007, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2007.31.023

Abstract Among diseases reported worldwidely for sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L) Lam) crop, one of the most frequent is the Sweet potato virus disease (SPVD), caused by sweet potato chlorotic stunt virus (SPCSV) and sweet potato feathery mottle virus (SPFMV) co-infection. In Argentina, there exists the sweet potato chlorotic dwarf (SPCD), a sweet potato disease caused by triple co-infection with SPCSV, SPFMV and sweet potato mild speckling virus(SPMSV). Both diseases cause a synergism between the potyviruses(SPFMV and SPMSV) and the crinivirus (SPCSV). Up to date, studies carried out on the interaction among these three viruses have… More >

A Numerical Study of Strain Localization in Elasto-Thermo-Viscoplastic Materials using Radial Basis Function Networks

    P. Le1, N. Mai-Duy1, T. Tran-Cong1, G. Baker2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.5, No.2, pp. 129-150, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2007.005.129

Abstract This paper presents a numerical simulation of the formation and evolution of strain localization in elasto-thermo-viscoplastic materials (adiabatic shear band) by the indirect/integral radial basis function network (IRBFN) method. The effects of strain and strain rate hardening, plastic heating, and thermal softening are considered. The IRBFN method is enhanced by a new coordinate mapping which helps capture the stiff spatial structure of the resultant band. The discrete IRBFN system is integrated in time by the implicit fifth-order Runge-Kutta method. The obtained results are compared with those of the Modified Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (MSPH) method and More >

    KARINA M. MICHETTI1,2, PATRICIA I. LEONARDI1,3, EDUARDO J. CÁCERES1,4

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.3, pp. 491-496, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.491

Abstract Nonspecific acid phosphatases are a group of enzymes whose activity increases the availability of exogenous and endogenous orthophosphate either through extra- or intracellular hydrolysis of phosphate compounds. Our study demonstrates the activity of acid phosphatases in the filamentous freshwater alga Stigeoclonium tenue. These enzymes were detected following a cerium-based method in which cerium was used as an orthophosphate-capture reagent. In thalli from S. tenue from the natural environment, acid phosphatases were found in the longitudinal cell wall, plasmalemma, and vacuole. In thalli from Bold’s Basal Medium culture, these enzymes were found mainly in the plasmalemma; they were More >

Numerical Modeling of the Influence of Water Suction on the Formation of Strain Localization in Saturated Sand

    X. Liu, A. Scarpas1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.9, No.1, pp. 57-74, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2005.009.057

Abstract Numerical investigations of strain localization have been performed on 3D dense fully saturated sand specimens subjected to triaxial loading and simultaneous inflow or outflow conditions. The role of the water suction field on the formation and evolution of strain localization is addressed computationally. It has been shown that, in a porous medium, the fluid (water) phase plays indeed an important role in strain localization. The formation and evolution of strain localization are influenced both by the material behaviour of the solid component and the interaction between components. In this contribution, after a presentation of the More >

Soon Wan Chung1, Yoo Jin Choi1, Seung Jo Kim1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.6, pp. 707-718, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.707

Abstract In this paper, an automatic finite element remeshing algorithm based on the bubble packing method is utilized for the purpose of numerical simulations of localized damage, because fine meshes are needed to represent the gradually concentrated damage. The bubble packing method introduces two parameters that easily control the remeshing criterion and the new mesh size. The refined area is determined by \textit {a posteriori} error estimation utilizing the value obtained from Superconvergent Patch Recovery. The isotropic ductile damage theory, founded on continuum damage mechanics, is used for this damage analysis. It was successfully shown in More >
