    Analia G. Karadayian1, Juanita Bustamante2, Silvia Lores-Arnaiz1, *

    BIOCELL, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 31-34, 2016, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2016.40.031

Abstract Alcohol hangover (AH) is defined as the temporary state after alcohol binge-like drinking, starting when EtOH is absent in plasma. Results from our laboratory have shown behavioral impairments and mitochondrial dysfunction in an experimental model of AH in mice. Our model consisted in a single i.p. injection of EtOH (3.8 g/kg BW) or saline solution in male and female mice, sacrificing the animals 6 hours after injection. Motor and affective behavior together with mitochondrial function and free radical production were evaluated in brain cortex and cerebellum during AH. Results showed that hangover animals exhibited a… More >

Ketamine effect on intracellular and mitochondrial calcium mobilization

    Juanita BUSTAMANTE1,*, Analía CZERNICZYNIEC2, Silvia LORES-ARNAIZ2

    BIOCELL, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 11-14, 2016, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2016.40.011

Abstract The suppressive effects of ketamine on intracellular calcium has been reported in a variety of cells although the mechanisms involved are not well understood. The aim of this work was to evaluate the ketamine effect on the mitochondrial Ca2+ accumulation and the cellular Ca2+ mobilization using FLUO4-AM and flow cytometry. The results showed that mitochondria from ketamine injected animals presented a lower ability to retain calcium at concentrations higher than 20 μM, as compared with controls (saline injected animals). In addition, ketamine showed a significant decreased KCl-induced intracellular calcium concentration. KCl increased calcium influx through More >

    M.N.D. Cherief1, M. Elmeguenni1, M. Benguediab1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.51, No.3, pp. 187-201, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2016.051.187

Abstract Impact behavior of polymers has received considerable attention in recent years, and much work based on fracture mechanic approaches has been carried out. In this paper, fracture behavior in large deformation of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) materials was investigated through experimental impact testing on single edge notched specimen (SENB) and by using theoretical and analytical fracture criteria concepts. Moreover, a review of the main fracture criteria is given in order to characterize the toughness of this polymer in the both cases (static and dynamic). The fractured specimens obtained from the Charpy impact test were More >

    PoojaJhunjhunwala1, P.M. Padole2, S.B. Thombre3

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 1-21, 2016, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2016.013.001

Abstract This paper presents Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of blood flow in three different 3-D models of left coronary artery (LCA). A comparative study of flow parameters (pressure distribution, velocity distribution and wall shear stress) in each of the models is done for a non-Newtonian (Carreau) as well as the Newtonian nature of blood viscosity over a complete cardiac cycle. The difference between these two types of behavior of blood is studied for both transient and steady states of flow. Additionally, flow parameters are compared for steady and transient boundary conditions considering blood as non-Newtonian More >

Atomic Exponential Basis Function Eup(x,ω) - Development and Application

    Nives Brajčić Kurbaša1, Blaž Gotovac1, Vedrana Kozulić1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.111, No.6, pp. 493-530, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2016.111.493

Abstract This paper presents exponential Atomic Basis Functions (ABF), which are called Eup(x,ω). These functions are infinitely differentiable finite functions that unlike algebraic up(x) basis functions, have an unspecified parameter - frequency w. Numerical experiments show that this class of atomic functions has good approximation properties, especially in the case of large gradients (Gibbs phenomenon). In this work, for the first time, the properties of exponential ABF are thoroughly investigated and the expression for calculating the value of the basis function at an arbitrary point of the domain is given in a form suitable for implementation in More >

Modeling Impacts on Space Situational Awareness PHD Filter Tracking

    C. Frueh1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.111, No.2, pp. 171-201, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2016.111.171

Abstract In recent years, probabilistic tracking methods have been becoming increasingly popular for solving the multi-target tracking problem in Space Situational Awareness (SSA). Bayesian frameworks have been used to describe the objects' of interest states and cardinality as point processes. The inputs of the Bayesian framework filters are a probabilistic description of the scene at hand, the probability of clutter during the observation, the probability of detection of the objects, the probability of object survival and birth rates, and in the state update, the measurement uncertainty and process noise for the propagation. However, in the filter… More >

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 173-192, 2016, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2016.012.173

Abstract This paper outlines the findings in the comparison of the influence of mechanical and electromagnetic stirring on ingot long term purity and uniformity during Ohno Continuous Casting. The magnitude of the average optimum velocity flow field and stirring parameters required to effectively purify aluminum ingots using mechanical stirring of the melt was determined and analyzed. Basing on the determined optimum mechanical flow field, electromagnetic parameters producing almost the same flow field near the interface were obtained through careful adjustments of parameters. Optimum parameters of the mechanical and electromagnetic stirring were obtained by numerically solving the… More >

A Numerical Study Comparing The Effect on Residual Stresses of Two Different Types of Projectiles During Shot Peening

    J. Solórzano-López1, F.A. García-Pastor2, Angélica Flores-Luna3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.51, No.3, pp. 203-215, 2016, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2016.051.203

Abstract Shot peening is a widely used technique to improve fatigue life in metallic alloys. This processing technique introduces a subsurface compressive residual stress field through a plastic deformation of the surface caused by the impact of a large number of high-speed projectiles. There are a number of parameters that affect the residual stress field depth and magnitude. The effects of the impact angle, shot speed and shot geometry are currently being researched. In particular, substituting spherical cast shots by cylindrical cut wire shots is an attractive option, especially in terms of cost. The effect of… More >
