Toughening Mechanisms in Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Amorphous Carbon Matrix Composites

    J.B. Niu1, L.L. Li2, Q. Xu1, Z.H. Xia1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.38, No.1, pp. 31-41, 2013, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2013.038.031

Abstract Crack deflection and penetration at the interface of multi-wall carbon nanotube/amorphous carbon composites were studied via molecular dynamics simulations. In-situ strength of double-wall nanotubes bridging a matrix crack was calculated under various interfacial conditions. The structure of the nanotube reinforcement -ideal multi-wall vs. multi-wall with interwall sp3 bonding - influences the interfacial sliding and crack penetration. When the nanotube/matrix interface is strong, matrix crack penetrates the outermost layer of nanotubes but it deflects within the nanotubes with certain sp3 interwall bond density, resulting in inner wall pullout. With increasing the sp3 interwall bond density, the fracture mode More >

Mechanisms of immune complex-mediated experimental glomerulonephritis: possible role of the balance between endogenous TNF and soluble TNF receptor type 2

Eva Pfeifer, Johannes Polz, Sybille Grieβl, Sven Mostböck, Thomas Hehlgans, Daniela N. Männel

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.23, No.1, pp. 15-20, 2012, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2012.0299

Abstract In an experimental model of immune-complex-mediated glomerulonephritis, mice excreted increased levels of urinary protein starting three days after the induction. Mice lacking the TNF receptor type 2 (TNFR2) were protected from early proteinuria and enhanced mortality. Analysis of the molecular basis of the mechanisms of glomerulonephritis revealed that naïve mice continuously excrete soluble TNF-neutralizing TNFR2 in urine. Mice kept in a specific pathogen-free environment did not go on to develop early proteinuria or enhanced mortality, following induction of glomerulonephritis. TNFR2-deficient mice were protected from early proteinuria and enhanced mortality only when housed conventionally. Mice producing More >

Mechanisms of IL-33 processing and secretion: differences and similarities between IL-1 family members*

    Emma Lefrançais1,2, Corinne Cayrol1,2

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.23, No.4, pp. 120-127, 2012, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2012.0320

Abstract Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is the latest member of the IL-1 family that has become very attractive since the discovery of its major target cells, the innate lymphoid cells type 2 (ILC2), involved in the initiation of the type 2 immune response (secretion of IL-5 and IL-13) during parasitic infection and allergic diseases such as asthma. IL-33 is a chromatin-associated protein as it possesses in its N-terminus, a chromatin-binding domain, and is constitutively expressed in the nuclei of endothelial cells and in epithelial cells of tissues exposed to the environment. It is however, essential for IL-33 to… More >

Abstract Berberine, a constituent of some traditional Chinese medicinal plants, has been reported to have cytotoxicity effects on different human cancer cell lines. There is no available information about the effects and mechanism of action of berberine on human colon cancer cell line HCT-8. In this paper, the cytotoxicity of berberine on HCT-8 cancer cells was investigated by MTT assay, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry analysis. Our data revealed that berberine could significantly inhibit the growth of HCT-8 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Morphology of apoptotic cells was studied with acridine orange/ ethidium bromide… More >

A Multi-Criteria Topology Optimization for Systematic Design of Compliant Mechanisms

    Zhen Luo1,2, Nong Zhang,1,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.28, No.1, pp. 27-56, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2012.028.027

Abstract This paper attempts to present a new multi-criteria topological optimization methodology for the systematic design of compliant micro-mechanisms. Instead of employing only the strain energy (SE) or the functional specifications such as mechanical efficiency (ME), in this study an alternative formulation representing multiple design requirements is included in the optimization to describe the performance of compliant mechanisms. In most conventional designs, SE is used to only measure the design requirement from the point of view of structures, while ME is usually applied to describe the mechanical performance of mechanisms. However, the design of a compliant… More >

Simulation of the Deformation Mechanisms of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) Foam using the Material Point Method

    Jin Ma1, Jay C. Hanan1, Ranga Komanduri1, Hongbing Lu2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.86, No.4, pp. 349-384, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.086.349

Abstract Amorphous metallic foams are an exciting class of materials for an array of high impact absorption applications, the mechanical behavior of which is only beginning to be characterized. To determine mechanical properties, guide processing, and engineer the microstructure for impact absorption, simulation of the mechanical properties is necessary as experimental determination alone can be expensive and time consuming. In this investigation, the material point method (MPM) with C1 continuous shape function is used to simulate the response of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) closed-cell foam (Pd42.5Cu30Ni7.5P20) under compression. The BMG foam was also tested experimentally… More >

Design of Compliant Mechanisms Using Meshless Level Set Methods

    Zhen Luo1, Nong Zhang1, Tao Wu2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.85, No.4, pp. 299-328, 2012, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2012.085.299

Abstract This paper presents a meshless Galerkin level-set method (MGLSM) for shape and topology optimization of compliant mechanisms of geometrically nonlinear structures. The design boundary of the mechanism is implicitly described as the zero level set of a Lipschitz continuous level set function of higher dimension. The moving least square (MLS) approximation is used to construct the meshless shape functions with the global Galerkin weak-form in terms of a set of arbitrarily distributed nodes. The MLS shape function is first employed to parameterize the level set function via the surface fitting rather than interpolation, and then… More >

Shihong Zhang#, Ning Li, Zhihua Wang

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.3, pp. 1-5, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.3.3004

Abstract This article discussed the thermal efficiency, stability and pollutant emissions characteristics of the combustion of lean natural gas-air mixtures in Pd metal based honeycomb monoliths by means of experiments on a practical burner V. The chemistry at work in the monoliths was then investigated by the stagnation point flow reactor( SPFR), a fundamental experimental reactor. It was found that catalytic combustion inhibited the extent of gas-phase oxidation and increased the surface temperature of homogeneous ignition. According to the applications of catalytic combustion in the condenser boiler, the data of catalytic combustion condenser boiler V were More >

Deformation mechanisms in advanced Ti-based alloy in instrument-workpiece interaction

Murat Demiral, Anish Roy, Vadim V. Silberschmidt

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 87-88, 2011, DOI:10.3970/icces.2011.017.087

Abstract Industrial applications of Ti-based alloys especially in aerospace, marine and offshore industries have grown significantly over the years primarily due to their high strength, light weight as well as excellent temperature- and corrosion-resistance properties. Since these alloys are hard to machine, there is an obvious demand to develop simulation tools in order to analyze the material's behavior in machining processes, such as a turning, and to optimize process parameters. High levels of strains and strain rates accompanied by generated high temperatures characterize the deformation process in turning. The character of realisation of deformation mechanisms as… More >

Abstract Currently mines seismic emergence mechanism is unclear. To solve this problem, the article analyzes the occurring mechanism of mines seismic and studies the mines seismic classification. Meanwhile we establish three-Dimension excitation model of mines seismic, then derive the propagation model of mines seismic. Research shows that Coal-rock mass produced brittle fracture when outside force to exceed its ultimate strength in complex stress, after the release of energy generate mines seismic. The establishment of the model explains mines seismic occurrence mechanism, and provides the theoretical foundation for mines seismic magnitude calculation and accurate Orientation in the More >
