Efficient Cohomology Computation for Electromagnetic Modeling

    Paweł Dłotko1, Ruben Specogna2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.60, No.3, pp. 247-278, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.060.247

Abstract The systematic potential design is of high importance in computational electromagnetics. For example, it is well known that when the efficient eddy-current formulations based on a magnetic scalar potential are employed in problems which involve conductive regions with holes, the so-calledthick cutsare needed to make the boundary value problem well defined. Therefore, a considerable effort has been invested over the past twenty-five years to develop fast and general algorithms to compute thick cuts automatically. Nevertheless, none of the approaches proposed in literature meet all the requirements of being automatic, computationally efficient and general. In this More >

    Daniel C. Moura1, Jorge G. Barbosa1, Ana M. Reis2, João Manuel R. S. Tavares3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.60, No.2, pp. 115-138, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.060.115

Abstract This paper presents a new method for the calibration of biplanar radiography that makes possible performing 3D reconstructions of the spine using conventional radiological systems. A novel approach is proposed in which a measuring device is used for determining focal distance and have a rough estimation of translation parameters. Using these data, 3D reconstructions of the spine with correct scale were successfully obtained without the need of calibration objects, something that was not previously achieved. For superior results, two optional steps may be executed that involve an optimisation of the geometrical parameters, followed by a… More >

    F. Auricchio1,2,3,4,1,5,1, M. Contisup>1,5,S. Morgantisup>1,, A. Reali1,2,3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.57, No.3, pp. 225-244, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.057.225

Abstract The use of shape memory alloys (SMA) in an increasing number of applications in many fields of engineering, and in particular in biomedical engineering, is leading to a growing interest toward an exhaustive modeling of their macroscopic behavior in order to construct reliable simulation tools for SMA-based devices. In this paper, we review the properties of a robust three-dimensional model able to reproduce both pseudo-elastic and shape-memory effect; then we calibrate the model parameters on experimental data and, finally, we exploit the model to perform the finite element analysis of pseudo-elastic Nitinol stent deployment in More >

Marangoni-Natural Convection in Liquid Metals in the Presence of a Tilted Magnetic Field

    S. Hamimid1, A.Amroune1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.4, pp. 369-384, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.369

Abstract The Navier-Stokes and energy equations are numerically solved to investigate two-dimensional convection (originating from the combined effect of buoyancy and surface tension forces) in a liquid metal subjected to transverse magnetic fields. In particular, a laterally heated horizontal cavity with aspect ratio (height/width) =1 and Pr=0.015 is considered (typically associated with the horizontal Bridgman crystal growth process and commonly used for benchmarking purposes). The effect of a uniform magnetic field with different magnitudes and orientations on the stability of the two distinct convective solution branches (with a single-cell or two-cell pattern) of the steady-state flows More >

    Leela Rakesh1, Anja Mueller2, Pratik Chhetri1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 179-202, 2010, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2010.006.179

Abstract A new material for proton conducting membrane with a higher proton transport but reduced water transport is being developed. The new material optimizes proton channel formation, this reducing water transport at the same time. Different proton transporting groups along with different gas flowing channels are examined as well. To meet the goals we design, synthesize, and simulate various proton transporting groups using MD techniques for faster optimization, which in turn helps to synthesize and test only promising structures in the laboratory. At the same time, computer modeling is used to improve the fuel cell system More >

    Metin Kök1,2, Erdogan Kanca3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.18, No.3, pp. 213-236, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.018.213

Abstract In this investigation, a new model was developed to predict the wear rate of Al2O3 particle-reinforced aluminum alloy composites by Genetic Expression Programming (GEP). The training and testing data sets were obtained from the well established abrasive wear test results. The volume fraction of particle, particle size of reinforcement, abrasive grain size and sliding distance were used as independent input variables, while wear rate (WR) as dependent output variable. Different models for wear rate were predicted on the basis of training data set using genetic programming and accuracy of the best model was proved with More >

Simulation of Dendritic Growth with Different Orientation by Using the Point Automata Method

    A.Z. Lorbiecka1, B. Šarler1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.18, No.1, pp. 69-104, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.018.069

Abstract The aim of this paper is simulation of thermally induced liquid-solid dendritic growth in two dimensions by a coupled deterministic continuum mechanics heat transfer model and a stochastic localized phase change kinetics model that takes into account the undercooling, curvature, kinetic and thermodynamic anisotropy. The stochastic model receives temperature information from the deterministic model and the deterministic model receives the solid fraction information from the stochastic model. The heat transfer model is solved on a regular grid by the standard explicit Finite Difference Method (FDM). The phase-change kinetics model is solved by the classical Cellular… More >

    Nanostiffening in Polymeric Nanocomposites

    J. Wang1, D. C. C. Lam2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.17, No.3, pp. 215-232, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.017.215

Abstract Selected elastic moduli of nanocomposites are higher than the elastic moduli of microcomposites. Molecular immobilization and crystallization at the interfaces had been proposed as potential causes, but studies suggested that these effects are minor and cannot be used to explain the magnitude observed in nanocomposites with >3nm particles. Alternately, molecular simulation of polymer deformation showed that rotation gradients can lead to additional molecular rotations and stiffen the matrix. The stiffening is characterized by the nanostiffening material parameter, l2. In this investigation, an analytical expression for nanostiffening in nanocomposites was developed using finite element analysis. The More >

Multiscale Modeling of Crystalline Energetic Materials.

    O. U. Ojeda1 and T. Çagınˇ 1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.2, pp. 127-174, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.127

Abstract The large discrepancy in length and time scales at which characteristic processes of energetic materials are of relevance pose a major challenge for current simulation techniques. We present a systematic study of crystalline energetic materials of different sensitivity and analyze their properties at different theoretical levels. Information like equilibrium structures, vibrational frequencies, conformational rearrangement and mechanical properties like stiffness and elastic properties can be calculated within the density functional theory (DFT) using different levels of approximations. Dynamical properties are obtained by computations using molecular dynamics at finite temperatures through the use of classical force fields. More >
