SYSTEMATIC STRATEGY FOR MODELING AND OPTIMIZATION OF THERMAL SYSTEMS WITH DESIGN UNCERTAINTIES

Po Ting Lin, Hae Chang Gea, Yogesh Jaluria*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-20, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.1.3003

Abstract Thermal systems play significant roles in the engineering practice and our lives. To improve those thermal systems, it is necessary to model and optimize the design and the operating conditions. More importantly, the design uncertainties should be considered because the failures of the thermal systems may be very dangerous and produce large loss. This review paper focuses on a systematic strategy of modeling and optimizing of the thermal systems with the considerations of the design uncertainties. To demonstrate the proposed strategy, one of the complicated thermal systems, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), is simulated, parametrically modeled,… More >

    C. A. Bronkhorst1,2, A. R. Ross3, B. L. Hansen1, E. K. Cerreta2, J. F. Bingert2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.17, No.2, pp. 149-174, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.017.149

Abstract A common sample geometry used to study shear localization is the "tophat": an axi-symmetric sample with an upper "hat" portion and a lower "brim" portion. The gage section lies between the hat and brim. The gage section length is on the order of 0.9 mm with deformation imposed through a Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar system at maximum top-to-bottom velocity in the range of 10-25 m/sec. Detailed metallographic analysis has been performed on sections of the samples to quantify the topology and deformation state of the material after large deformation shear. These experiments performed with polycrystalline tantalum… More >

CFD case study to optimize surgical adjustment of ventricular assist device implantation to minimize stroke risk part I: steady-state CFD modeling

    Andres F. Osorio1, Ruben Osorio1, Reginald Tran1, Andres Ceballos1, Alain Kassab1, Eduardo Divo2, I. Ricardo Argueta-Morales3, William M. DeCampli3,4

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.4, pp. 123-124, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.123

Abstract Presently, mechanical support is the most promising alternative to cardiac transplantation. Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs) were originally used to provide mechanical circulatory support in patients waiting planned heart transplantation (“bridge-to-transplantation” therapy). The success of short-term bridge devices led to clinical trials evaluating the clinical suitability of long-term support (“destination” therapy) with left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). The first larger-scale, randomized trial that tested long-term support with a LVAD reported a 44% reduction in the risk of stroke or death in patients with a LVAD. In spite of the success of LVADs as bridge-to-transplantation and long-term… More >

Material characterization and modeling of head for dynamic simulations

    L. Zhang1, T. Boulet1, J. Hein1, M. Arnoult1, M. Negahban1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 37-46, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.037

Abstract The modeling of the response of the human head to blast like loading is of importance for many applications including the study of traumatic brain injury resulting from improvised explosive devices. One key issue in simulating the response of the head is to have models that are characteristic of the response of the head and its components under these conditions. We review different characterization efforts for evaluating the response of the skin, skull, and brain within this window of response and use these results to develop models appropriate for the characterization of each component. Modeling of the bolted joint behavior variability \\ with the Lack of Knowledge theory

    F. Gant1, L. Champaney1, Ph. Rouch1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.14, No.3, pp. 97-98, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.014.097

Abstract Widely used in aeronautics, bolted and riveted joints are subject to high and various loads during flight. The design of such elements is quite a challenge because of their large number and uncertain nonlinear behavior. Indeed, the control of joint properties such as bolt pretension, bolt hole clearance, and friction during manufacturing processes is an issue.
Engineering design uses a factor of safety (FoS) to quantify uncertainties, which often leads to an oversized structure. Here, the aim is to model uncertainty effects on quantities of interest in order to redefine a more accurate FoS that could… More >

On essential work of fracture method: theoretical consideration and numerical simulation

    X.-H. Chen1, Y.-W. Mai2

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 43-50, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.014.043

Abstract A general elastoplastic fracture mechanics theory is proposed for applying the Essential-Work-of-Fracture (EWF) Method to quasi-static and impact toughness characterization. Advanced finite element modeling is developed to simulate the EWF Method using the crack-tip opening angle criterion (CTOA) and the constitutive relation of the material under consideration. For Poly(ethylene-terephlate) (PET) films, the load-displacement curves are calculated for the whole crack propagation process of deeply double-edge notched tensile specimens (DENT) with different ligament lengths so as to determine the total work, the essential work and the non-essential work of fracture. The effects of specimen gauge length More >

    F.E. Mensah∗,†, R. Sridhar, P. Misra

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.7, No.4, pp. 203-212, 2010, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2010.007.203

Abstract This work presents an overview of the use of liposomes for targeted delivery of photosensitizers to tumors for Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). It assesses the results of a quantitative model to explain the interaction of short-pulsed lasers (in the nanosecond and picosecond domains) with a liposome-dye complex in terms of a localized photo-induced thermal mechanism. Incorporation of an organic dye (sulforhodamine) within lipid vesicles has been investigated in conjunction with the effect of laser irradiation on the integrity of the liposome-dye complex. The variation of the absorption coefficient as a function of wavelength for dye-encapsulated liposomes More >

    Xituan Shang*, Michael R. T. Yen1,†, M. Waleed Gaber

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.7, No.2, pp. 93-104, 2010, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2010.007.093

Abstract The objective of this research is to conduct mechanical property studies of skin from two individual but potentially connected aspects. One is to determine the mechanical properties of the skin experimentally by biaxial tests, and the other is to use the finite element method to model the skin properties. Dynamic biaxial tests were performed on 16 pieces of abdominal skin specimen from rats. Typical biaxial stress-strain responses show that skin possesses anisotropy, nonlinearity and hysteresis. To describe the stress-strain relationship in forms of strain energy function, the material constants of each specimen were obtained and More >
