Dynamic Pressures on Tunnel Roofs due to Vehicle Passages

    James D. Barnes1, Ethan R. Brush1, Mark S. Newmark1, Eric E. Ungar1, *

    Sound & Vibration, Vol.52, No.4, pp. 6-8, 2018, DOI:10.32604/sv.2018.03737

Abstract Pressure and proximity measurements made in a tunnel indicate that a typical vehicle passage produced on the tunnel roof an initial pressure increase of small magnitude, followed by a sharp and more substantial drop in pressure below atmospheric. The magnitude of the pressure drop was found to increase with smaller clearances between the vehicle top and the tunnel roof, consistent with the Bernoulli relation and the vehicle speed. The dynamic pressures potentially may have significant effects on the vibration and noise environments on the lower floors of “air rights construction” buildings that span highways. More >

    BIOCELL, Vol.42, No.3, pp. 79-86, 2018, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2018.04615

Abstract Ischemic postconditioning (IP) has been shown to provide protection for ischemia/reperfusion (IR) injury, but its efficacy is limited. In this study we hypothesized that spontaneous running wheel (RW) could improve neuroprotection efficacy of IP for IR. We established mouse models of IR and showed that compared to Sham group, IR group had obvious brain infract and neurological dysfunction. In IR+IP group, brain infract and neurological dysfunction improved compared to IR group. However, in IR+IP+RW group brain infract and neurological dysfunction improved much better. TUNEL assay showed that IP but not RW significantly reduced the number… More >

Heat and Mass Transfer of a non-Newtonian Fluid Flow in an Anisotropic Porous Channel with Chemical Surface Reaction

    Z. Neffah1, H. Kahalerras1, *, B. Fersadou1

    FDMP-Fluid Dynamics & Materials Processing, Vol.14, No.1, pp. 39-56, 2018, DOI:10.3970/fdmp.2018.014.039

Abstract A numerical study of heat and mass transfer in a non-Newtonian fluid in a parallel-plate channel partly filled with an anisotropic porous medium and subjected to an exothermic chemical reaction on its walls has been conducted. The flow field in the porous region has been modeled by the modified Brinkman-Forchheimer extended Darcy model for power-law fluids and a finite volume method has been used to solve the governing equations. The influence played by a variation of the anisotropic ratio on thermal conductivity, power-law index, Darcy number, and chemical reaction characteristics has been examined. We show More >

A Pathway to Explore the Hidden Specialty in the Design of Fifteen Level Inverter in Grid Connected PV System

    C. Gopinath1, *, M. Rajvikram1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.115, No.3, pp. 359-386, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2018.06143

Abstract This research paper proposes a single phase fifteen level inverter for a grid connected PV system. The proposed inverter is also called cascaded asymmetric multilevel inverter. By adopting appropriate hybrid modulation technique improved output voltage is obtained with minimum number of power electronic switches. By reducing the number of gate triggering circuits of the switches, the size and power consumption of the driving circuits can be reduced. The total harmonic distortion of the output of the inverter is improved by this inverter. The proposed inverter developed by cascading a full bridge inverter with modified H More >

Novel Bio-based Flame Retardant Systems Derived from Tannic Acid

    Fouad LAOUTID1,*, Valeriia KARASEVA1, Lucie COSTES1, 2, Sylvain BROHEZ2, Rosica MINCHEVA1, Philippe DUBOIS1

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.6, No.6, pp. 559-572, 2018, DOI:10.32604/JRM.2018.00004

Abstract In this study, tannic acid (TA) was investigated as flame retardant agent for PLA. Different strategies to modify its thermal degradation pathway have been explored in order to improve its charring effect. The first one consists in combining TA with organomodified montmorillonite (oMMT), and enables limiting the thermo-oxidative degradation of TA and promoting the formation of an effective char layer. Flame-retardant (FR) behavior of PLA-based composition has been found to be positively impacted by this combination since a reduction of the peak of Heat Release Rate (PHRR), more important than the value recorded when oMMT More >

2-D Statistical Damage Detection of Concrete Structures Combining Smart Piezoelectric Materials and Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry

    Costas P. Providakis1,*, Stavros E. Tsistrakis1, Evangelos V. Liarakos1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.12, No.4, pp. 257-279, 2018, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2018.04607

Abstract In the present study a new structural health monitoring (SHM) technique is proposed as well as a new damage index based on 2-D error statistics. The proposed technique combines the electromechanical impedance technique (EMI) which is based on the use of piezoelectric Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) patches and Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry (SLDV) for damage detection purposes of concrete structures and early age monitoring. Typically the EMI technique utilizes the direct and inverse piezoelectric effect of a PZT patch attached to a host structure via an impedance analyzer that is used for both the actuation… More >

Information Monitoring Technology for Support Structure of Railway Tunnel During Operation

    Licai Zhao1,*, Shishuenn Chen

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.12, No.1, pp. 35-50, 2018, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2018.012.035

Abstract In the process of railway construction, because of the inconvenience of geological condition, water bursting and mud surging happen frequently, and the later deformation of support structure on the happening geology section would threaten the normal running of railway. The limit difference of deformation control value of the support structure section where geological accidents frequently happen, is small, and artificial half-automatic supervisory technology cannot get the health condition of tunnel in time, resulting many cars speed-down accidents due to deformation of support structure. Through design innovation, we introduce TGMIS in the later period of Yanzishan… More >

Fast Near-duplicate Image Detection in Riemannian Space by A Novel Hashing Scheme

    Ligang Zheng1,*, Chao Song2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 529-539, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.03780

Abstract There is a steep increase in data encoded as symmetric positive definite (SPD) matrix in the past decade. The set of SPD matrices forms a Riemannian manifold that constitutes a half convex cone in the vector space of matrices, which we sometimes call SPD manifold. One of the fundamental problems in the application of SPD manifold is to find the nearest neighbor of a queried SPD matrix. Hashing is a popular method that can be used for the nearest neighbor search. However, hashing cannot be directly applied to SPD manifold due to its non-Euclidean intrinsic More >

    Bo Xiao1, Zhen Wang2, Qi Liu3,*, Xiaodong Liu3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 365-379, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.01830

Abstract In recent years, the rapid development of big data technology has also been favored by more and more scholars. Massive data storage and calculation problems have also been solved. At the same time, outlier detection problems in mass data have also come along with it. Therefore, more research work has been devoted to the problem of outlier detection in big data. However, the existing available methods have high computation time, the improved algorithm of outlier detection is presented, which has higher performance to detect outlier. In this paper, an improved algorithm is proposed. The SMK-means More >
