Seasonal variations in the heterologous binding of viscacha spermatozoa. A scanning electron microscope study

CLAUDIA AGUILERA MERLO, ESTELA MUÑOZ, SUSANA DOMINGUEZ, MABEL FÓSCOLO*, LUIS SCARDAPANE, JUAN CARLOS DE ROSAS*

    BIOCELL, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 243-251, 2005, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2005.29.243

Abstract Seasonal changes in the reproductive activity of the adult male viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) were investigated during the annual reproductive cycle. Assays of heterologous in vitro binding between compatible gametes were used to evaluate the ability of viscacha spermatozoa to achieve primary binding during its annual reproductive cycle. Sperm were collected by mincing cauda epididymis in HECM-3 medium and the sperm concentration and motility were evaluated. Cumulus-free and zona-free oocytes obtained from superovulated hamsters were inseminated in vitro with capacitated sperm suspensions, incubated at 37ºC, 5% CO2 for 3 h, and then processed for studies by scanning… More >

Molecular cloning and characterization of a novel mannosebinding lectin cDNA from Zantedeschia aethiopica

    ZHONGHAI CHEN1, YONGZHEN PANG1, XIAOJUN LIU1, XINGLONG WANG1, ZHONGXIANG DENG1, XIAOFEN SUN1, KEXUAN TANG1,2

    BIOCELL, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 187-193, 2005, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2005.29.187

Abstract Using RNA extracted from Zantedeschia aethiopica young leaves and primers designed according to the conservative regions of Araceae lectins, the full-length cDNA of Z. aethiopica agglutinin (ZAA) was cloned by rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE). The full-length cDNA of zaa was 871 bp and contained a 417 bp open reading frame (ORF) encoding a lectin precursor of 138 amino acids. Through comparative analysis of zaa gene and its deduced amino acid sequence with those of other Araceae species, it was found that zaa encoded a precursor lectin with signal peptide. Secondary and three-dimensional structure analyses showed that ZAA More >

Applications of DTALE: Damage Tolerance Analysis and Life Enhancement [3-D Non-plannar Fatigue Crack Growth]

    S. N. Atluri1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-20, 2005, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2005.001.001

Abstract The solution of three-dimensional cracks (arbitrary surfaces of discontinuity) in solids and structures is considered. The BEM, developed based on the symmetric Galerkin BIEs, is used for obtaining the fracture solutions at the arbitrary crack-front. The finite element method is used to model the uncracked global (built-up) structure for obtaining the stresses in an otherwise uncracked body. The solution for the cracked structural component is obtained in an iteration procedure, which alternates between FEM solution for the uncracked body, and the SGBEM solution for the crack in the local finite-sized subdomain. In addition, some crack… More >

The Method of Fundamental Solutions Applied to the Calculation of Eigenfrequencies and Eigenmodes of 2D Simply Connected Shapes

    Carlos J. S. Alves, Pedro R. S. Antunes1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.2, No.4, pp. 251-266, 2005, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2005.002.251

Abstract In this work we show the application of the Method of Fundamental Solutions(MFS) in the determination of eigenfrequencies and eigenmodes associated to wave scattering problems. This meshless method was already applied to simple geometry domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions (cf. Karageorghis (2001)) and to multiply connected domains (cf. Chen, Chang, Chen, and Chen (2005)). Here we show that a particular choice of point-sourcescan lead to very good results for a fairly general type of domains. Simulations with Neumann boundary conditionare also considered. More >

Laparoscopic resection of a juxta-adrenal schwannoma

Kevin B. Morrison, Iain W. McAuley, John F. Kinahan

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 2309-2311, 2004

Abstract A seven centimeter supra-renal mass was discovered in a 62-year old patient who presented with gross hematuria and a superficial bladder tumor. The supra-renal mass was resected laparoscopically and the final pathology revealed a benign schwannoma. The epidemiology, diagnostic features and treatment options for this rare peripheral nerve sheath tumor are reviewed. More >

Restoring sexual function in prostate cancer patients: an innovative approach

    Ross E. Gray1, Laurence H. Klotz2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.3, pp. 2285-2289, 2004

Abstract It has been extremely difficult for men with prostate cancer to obtain reasonable estimates of the likelihood of remaining potent after first line therapy, partly because of differences in defining potency. If, as in more recent studies, the definition requires that men are usually (not just occasionally) able to get and sustain an erection, then the picture is not encouraging. Additional strategies are needed to help men sustain sexual activity. In this paper we draw on the experiences of a rather remarkable prostate cancer patient to help consider the possibilities for a different kind of… More >

    CASE REPORT

    Benign paratesticular Schwannoma

    Jeffrey S. Montgomery1, Brent K. Hollenbeck1, Peter C. Fisher1, Hedwig S. Murphy2,4, Willie Underwood, III1,3

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.5, pp. 2393-2395, 2004

Abstract Scrotal masses are common findings on genitourinary exam. The majority of these masses are benign and can be identified via history and physical exam alone. Question as to the origin of these masses merits additional evaluation that typically consists of an imaging study (e.g., ultrasound) and possibly serum tumor markers (e.g., HCG and AFP). In the end, surgical exploration may be necessary. Herein, the authors describe a rare case of benign paratesticular Schwannoma and discuss the clinical presentation and treatment of scrotal masses.
