    Juárez-Maldonado1 A, JL Rosales-Velázquez2, H Ortega-Ortiz3, M Cabrera-De-la-Fuente1, H Ramírez1, A Benavides-Mendoza1

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.82, pp. 91-97, 2013, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2013.82.091

Abstract Nanotechnology is currently an important worldwide study field because it provides control on matter at a nanometric scale. In food and agricultural fields, the applications of this technology are in early stages. Onion is one of the main vegetables grown in the world. Onion is a low calorie food which contains a large amount of flavonoids. In this work, silver nitrate application in onion was evaluated. An onion crop was developed at the University Antonio Narro in Saltillo, Mexico. Two methods of silver nitrate application were used (a nutritive solution: 0, 20, 40 and 80… More >

Protective effect of aqueous suspension of dried latex of Calotropis procera against oxidative stress and renal damage in diabetic rats

VIJAY L. KUMAR* AND BISWA M. PADHY

    BIOCELL, Vol.35, No.3, pp. 63-70, 2011, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2011.35.063

Abstract Calotropis species have been used in the traditional medicinal system for the treatment of diseases of the liver and abdomen. In view of the antioxidant and anti-hyperglycemic properties of an aqueous suspension obtained from the dried latex of Calotropis procera, the present study was carried out to evaluate its efficacy in affording protection against alloxan induced changes in rat kidney. A single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan (150 mg/kg) in rats produced hyperglycemia within 3 days and altered kidney functions over a period of 90 days. Daily oral administration of the aqueous suspension (100 and 400 mg/kg) in… More >

Comparison of isozyme transformation in maize as a result of insertion of the chitinase gene

    Yan PM1, HF Zhang1, Q Wang1, XY Yan1, Y Sun2

    Phyton-International Journal of Experimental Botany, Vol.79, pp. 117-121, 2010, DOI:10.32604/phyton.2010.79.117

Abstract Isozymes of peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), esterase (EST) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were analyzed on transgenic maize (with external chitinase gene) and its parent by vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). This study was made using shoots at the fourth leaf stage. Results showed that: POD and EST were detected in 6 bands. POD-2 and POD-3 were present at the bud and seedling stages. POD-1, POD-4, POD-5 and POD-6 were only present at the seedling stage. POD-6 expressed stronger in the transgenic maize with chitinase than in its parent. EST-2 was present only at the bud… More >

Antioxidant capacity of vitamin C in mouse liver and kidney tissues

ALICIA WEYERS, LAURA I. UGNIA, HUGO GARCÍA OVANDO, NORA B. GORLA*

    BIOCELL, Vol.32, No.1, pp. 27-31, 2008, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2008.32.027

Abstract In the present study, the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C was examined in the liver and the kidney tissues of mice with or without ciprofloxacin (CFX) treatment. The antioxidant capacity of the vitamin was evaluated in terms of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs). The experimental design was 15 days of water (control and CFX groups) or vitamin C (vitamin C and vitamin C plus CFX groups) in drinking water. One dose of CFX was injected, 15 minutes before sacrifice, in the corresponding mice.
The initial nmol of lipid hydroperoxides/g of tissue… More >
