Determination of AVR System PID Controller Parameters Using Improved Variants of Reptile Search Algorithm and a Novel Objective Function

    Baran Hekimoğlu*

    Energy Engineering, Vol.120, No.7, pp. 1515-1540, 2023, DOI:10.32604/ee.2023.029024

Abstract Two novel improved variants of reptile search algorithm (RSA), RSA with opposition-based learning (ORSA) and hybrid ORSA with pattern search (ORSAPS), are proposed to determine the proportional, integral, and derivative (PID) controller parameters of an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system using a novel objective function with augmented flexibility. In the proposed algorithms, the opposition-based learning technique improves the global search abilities of the original RSA algorithm, while the hybridization with the pattern search (PS) algorithm improves the local search abilities. Both algorithms are compared with the original RSA algorithm and have shown to be highly effective algorithms for tuning the… More > Graphic Abstract

    S. Hema1,*, Y. Sukhi2

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 1503-1519, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.036577

Abstract Smart grids and their technologies transform the traditional electric grids to assure safe, secure, cost-effective, and reliable power transmission. Non-linear phenomena in power systems, such as voltage collapse and oscillatory phenomena, can be investigated by chaos theory. Recently, renewable energy resources, such as wind turbines, and solar photovoltaic (PV) arrays, have been widely used for electric power generation. The design of the controller for the direct Current (DC) converter in a PV system is performed based on the linearized model at an appropriate operating point. However, these operating points are ever-changing in a PV system, and the design of the… More >

    Prabhu Kaliappan1,*, Aravindaguru Ilangovan2, Sivachitra Muthusamy3, Banumathi Sembanan4

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 781-801, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.030047

Abstract This paper presents the design and performance analysis of Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm based Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller for temperature control of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) plant in chemical industries. The proposed work deals about the design of Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm in order to improve the performance of CSTR. In this, the process is controlled by controlling the temperature of the liquid through manipulation of the coolant flow rate with the help of modified Model Reference Adaptive Controller (MRAC). The transient response of temperature process is improved by using PID Controller, Differential Evolution Algorithm based PID and fuzzy based… More >

Improved Clamped Diode Based Z-Source Network for Three Phase Induction Motor

    D. Bensiker Raja Singh1,*, R. Suja Mani Malar2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 683-702, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.028492

Abstract The 3Φ induction motor is a broadly used electric machine in industrial applications, which plays a vital role in industries because of having plenty of beneficial impacts like low cost and easiness but the problems like decrease in motor speed due to load, high consumption of current and high ripple occurrence of ripples have reduced its preferences. The ultimate objective of this study is to control change in motor speed due to load variations. An improved Trans Z Source Inverter (ΓZSI) with a clamping diode is employed to maintain constant input voltage, reduce ripples and voltage overshoot. To operate induction… More >

    A. Jegatheesh1,*, M. Germin Nisha2, N. Kopperundevi3

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.36, No.1, pp. 745-760, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.028011

Abstract Interacting The highest storage capacity of a circular tank makes it popular in process industries. Because of the varying surface area of the cross-sections of the tank, this two-tank level system has nonlinear characteristics. Controlling the flow rate of liquid is one of the most difficult challenges in the production process. This proposed effort is critical in preventing time delays and errors by managing the fluid level. Several scholars have explored and explored ways to reduce the problem of nonlinearity, but their techniques have not yielded better results. Different types of controllers with various techniques are implemented by the proposed… More >

An Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System to Improve Fractional Order Controller Performance

    N. Kanagaraj*

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.35, No.3, pp. 3213-3226, 2023, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2023.029901

Abstract The design and analysis of a fractional order proportional integral derivate (FOPID) controller integrated with an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is proposed in this study. A first order plus delay time plant model has been used to validate the ANFIS combined FOPID control scheme. In the proposed adaptive control structure, the intelligent ANFIS was designed such that it will dynamically adjust the fractional order factors (λ and µ) of the FOPID (also known as PIλDµ) controller to achieve better control performance. When the plant experiences uncertainties like external load disturbances or sudden changes in the input parameters, the stability… More >

Maximum Power Extraction Control Algorithm for Hybrid Renewable Energy System

    N. Kanagaraj*, Mohammed Al-Ansi

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 769-784, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.029457

Abstract In this research, a modified fractional order proportional integral derivate (FOPID) control method is proposed for the photovoltaic (PV) and thermoelectric generator (TEG) combined hybrid renewable energy system. The faster tracking and steady-state output are aimed at the suggested maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control technique. The derivative order number (µ) value in the improved FOPID (also known as PIλDµ) control structure will be dynamically updated utilizing the value of change in PV array voltage output. During the transient, the value of µ is changeable; it’s one at the start and after reaching the maximum power point (MPP), allowing for… More >

    Taweesak Thongsan, Theerayuth Chatchanayuenyong*

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.45, No.1, pp. 595-623, 2023, DOI:10.32604/csse.2023.027966

Abstract This paper proposes a low complexity control scheme for voltage control of a dynamic voltage restorer (DVR) in a three-phase system. The control scheme employs the fractional order, proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller to improve on the DVR performance in order to enhance the power quality in terms of the response time, steady-state error and total harmonic distortion (THD). The result obtained was compared with fractional order, proportional-integral (FOPI), proportional-integral-derivative (PID) and proportional-integral (PI) controllers in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed DVR control scheme. A water cycle optimization algorithm (WCA) was utilized to find the optimal set for all… More >

    Ahmed M. Agwa1, Mohamed Abdeen2, Shaaban M. Shaaban1,3,*

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.73, No.3, pp. 5525-5541, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2022.031580

Abstract In this study, a bald eagle optimizer (BEO) is used to get optimal parameters of the fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative (FOPID) controller for load frequency control (LFC). Since BEO takes only a very short time in finding the optimal solution, it is selected for designing the FOPID controller that improves the system stability and maintains the frequency within a satisfactory range at different loads. Simulations and demonstrations are carried out using MATLAB-R2020b. The performance of the BEO-FOPID controller is evaluated using a two-zone interlinked power system at different loads and under uncertainty of wind and solar energies. The robustness of the BEO-FOPID… More >
