Bruno Manoel Pasquim1, Viviana Cocco Mariani1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.79, No.1, pp. 63-82, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2011.079.063

Abstract The main aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of a Eulerian-Lagrangian methodology (ELAFINT) to accurately deal with incompressible viscous steady flow in a domain with corners and curved boundaries. Thus, a two-dimensional lid-driven cavity with an irregular bottom was selected. The equations that govern the flow are discretized using the finite-volume method with a Cartesian grid. The evolution of the velocity fields, stream function and vorticity in the irregular cavity when the Reynolds number increases from 500 to 6000 is captured by the method under investigation. The results show that with an More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.25, No.1, pp. 1-18, 2011, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2011.025.001

Abstract This paper presents methodologies for crack growth study and fatigue remaining life prediction of reinforced concrete structural components accounting for the corrosion effects. Stress intensity factor (SIF) has been computed by using the principle of superposition. At each incremental crack length, net SIF has been computed as the difference of SIF of plain concrete and reinforcement. The behaviour of reinforcement has been considered as elasto-plastic. Uniform corrosion rate has been assumed in the modeling. Corrosion effect has been accounted in the form of reduction in the diameter and modulus of elasticity of steel. Numerical studies More >

PREDICTION OF BINARY MIXTURE BOILING HEAT TRANSFER IN SYSTEMS WITH STRONG MARANGONI EFFECTS

Kenneth M. Armijo, Van P. Carey*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 1-6, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.2.3003

Abstract This paper investigates the impact of Marangoni phenomena for low concentrations of 2-propanol/water and methanol/water mixtures. In real systems the addition of small levels of surface-active contaminants can affect the surface tension of the liquid-vapor interface and thermodynamic conditions in this region. Analysis was performed for three widely accepted binary mixture correlations to predict heat flux and superheat values for subatmospheric experimental data using bulk fluid and film thermodynamic properties. Due to the non-ideal nature of these alcohol/water mixtures, this study also employs an average pseudo single-component (PSC) coefficient in place of an ideal heat… More >

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.15, No.2, pp. 65-74, 2010, DOI:10.3970/icces.2010.015.065

Abstract Genetic algorithm is an emerging technique used in engineering design activities to find an optimized solution which satisfy a number of design goals. Non-linear direct method of goal search use successive linearization techniques, which are sensitive to the chosen starting solution and quality of the objective function. The proposed technique can solve programming problems having non-convex regions, which are usually avoided in classical optimization problems. The efficacy of the proposed novel method is demonstrated by solving a number of test problems. The results suggest that the proposed method is effective and represents a practical tool More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.69, No.3, pp. 261-280, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.069.261

Abstract A three dimensional thermal-elasto-plastic FEA has been performed to predict the heat induced (inherent) deformation produced in thick steel plates formed by line heating. Using this FEA, the edge effect on inherent deformation is clarified. From the results of this study, a method to predict the edge effect is developed. Using this method, the edge effect on inherent deformation, for a wide range of plate thickness and heating condition, can be easily predicted, been this, an important step toward the automation of the process. Efficient Engineering Prediction of Turbulent Wing Tip Vortex Flows

    Sung-Eun Kim1, Shin Hyung Rhee2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.62, No.3, pp. 291-310, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.062.291

Abstract Turbulent flow past a finite wing has been computed to assess the fidelity of modern computational fluid dynamics in predicting tip vortex flows. The efficacy of a feature-adaptive local mesh refinement to resolve the steep gradients in the flow field near the tip vortex is demonstrated. The impact of turbulence modeling is evaluated using several popular eddy viscosity models and a Reynolds stress transport model. The results indicate that the combination of a computational mesh with an adequate resolution, high-order spatial discretization scheme along with the use of advanced turbulence models can predict tip vortex More >

Mesh Effects in Predictions of Progressive Damage in 3D Woven Composites

    R. Valisetty1,2, A. Rajendran1,3, D. Grove2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.60, No.1, pp. 41-72, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.060.041

Abstract A multi-scale model exhibiting progressive damage is considered for a 3D-woven composite. It is based on the evolution of some fundamental damage modes in a representative volume element (RVE) of a composite's woven architecture. The overall response of a woven composite due to a variety of damage modes is computationally obtained through a transformation field analysis (TFA) that is capable of quantifying the effects of spatial distribution of micro stresses and strains on strength. Since the model is computationally intensive, its numerical requirements are to be understood before it can successfully be used in design More >

    G.I. Giannopoulos1, S.K. Georgantzinos2, D.E. Katsareas2, N.K. Anifantis2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 231-248, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2010.056.231

Abstract A hybrid finite element formulation, combining nanoscopic and macroscopic considerations is proposed, for the prediction of the elastic mechanical properties of single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT)-based composites. The nanotubes are modeled according to the molecular mechanics theory via the use of spring elements, while the matrix is modeled as a continuum medium. A new formulation concerning the load transfer between the nanotubes and matrix is proposed. The interactions between the two phases are implemented by utilizing appropriate stiffness variations describing a heterogeneous interfacial region. A periodic distribution and orientation of the SWCNTs is considered. Thereupon, More >

Numerical Formulations for the Prediction of Deformation, Strain and Stress of Un-patterned ETFE Cushions

    N.J. Bartle1, P.D. Gosling1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.20, No.1, pp. 19-62, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.020.019

Abstract ETFE cushions are increasingly being used to form high-profile facades and structural forms. This investigation aims to extend an analytical theory of large deformation in order to predict the shape and stress distributions of an un-patterned square ETFE cushion without the need to resort to discretised numerical methods. In order to assess the validity of the theoretical procedure a prototype cushion has been analysed using a finite element simulation. The theoretical procedure is also compared with alternative approximate equations proposed for the design of ETFE cushions. More >

Pressure-Force Transformation for Transient Wear Simulation in Two-Dimensional Sliding Contacts

    Chen Y J1,2, Huber N2,3

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.16, No.1, pp. 1-24, 2010, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2010.016.001

Abstract An efficient wear integration algorithm is crucial for the simulation of wear in complex transient contact situations. By rewriting Archard's wear law for two dimensional problems, the wear integration can be replaced by the total contact force. This avoids highly resolved simulations in time and space, so that the proposed method allows a significant acceleration of wear simulations. All quantities, including the average contact velocity, slip rate and total contact force, which are required for the pressure-force transformation, can be determined from geometric and motion analysis, or alternatively, from Finite Element simulations. The proposed CForce More >
