    Abstract The lung of the toad, Melanophryniscus stelzneri stelzneri was studied using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In M.s.stelzneri the parenchyma forms a polygonal network arrangement, therefore the parenchyma is edicular. These spaces are delimited by the interconnection of third order septa which are covered by respiratory epithelium. Small patches of ciliated epithelium without goblet cells appear irregularly distributed on the septa. The respiratory epithelium consists of one type of pneumocyte, which shows characteristics of both type I and type II alveolar cells of higher vertebrates.     Abstract The ultrastructure of the ovariole sheath along the Diatraea saccharalis ovariole was studied by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Each ovariole is surrounded by an epithelial sheath, a tunica propria and scattered lumen cells. These three components of the ovariole sheath show different ultrastructural features along the ovariole, in the germarium or in the vitellarium; these differences are more evident in the epithelial sheath cells.     Abstract NADPH-diaphorase is a useful technique to reveal NO producing neurons at light microscopic level (LM). A modification of the technique using the tetrazolium salt BSPT as susbtrate, is useful to study the ultrastructure of NO neurons. The aim of this work was to perform a detailed analysis of NADPH diaphorase reactive neurons in rat mesencephalon both at light and electron microscopic levels.

    Abstract We examined the presence of estrogen receptors (ER) in vascular mast cells and a possible genomic effect of estrogens on the expression of mast cell (MC) mediators such as chymase, TNFα, NOS and IL-10, which are known to affect the course of atherosclerosis.     Abstract The Boundary Element Method (BEM) is used to compute the three-dimensional variation pressure field generated by a point pressure source inside a flat waveguide channel filled with a homogeneous fluid, in the presence of infinite rigid circular pipelines.     Abstract Polynomial driving-force comb drives are designed using numerical simulation. The electrode shapes are obtained using the indirect boundary element method. Variable gap comb drives that produce combinations of linear, quadratic, and cubic driving-force profiles are synthesized. This inverse problem is solved by an optimization procedure. Sensitivity analysis is carried out by the direct differentiation approach (DDA) in order to compute design sensitivity coefficients (DSCs) of force profiles with respect to parameters that define the shapes of the fingers of a comb drive.     Abstract We present three techniques to accurately model the thermomechanical response of microsystem components: a new, accurate and stable Kirchhoff-Love multi-layered plate model implemented as an Argyris finite element, a model for the amplitude fluctuations of vibrational modes in micro-mechanical structures within a gaseous environment, and the consistent refinement of a finite element mesh in order to maximize the computational accuracy for a given mesh size.
