Crude Flavonoid Extract of Medicinal Herb Zingibar officinale Inhibits Proliferation and Induces Apoptosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells

    Ayman I. Elkady*†, Osama A. Abu-Zinadah*, Rania Abd El Hamid Hussein‡§

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.6, pp. 897-912, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504016X14816352324532

Abstract There is an urgent need to improve the clinical management of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most common causes of global cancer-related deaths. Zingibar officinale is a medicinal herb used throughout history for both culinary and medicinal purposes. It has antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, and free radical scavenging properties. Previously, we proved that the crude flavonoid extract of Z. officinale (CFEZO) inhibited growth and induced apoptosis in several cancer cell lines. However, the effect of the CFEZO on an HCC cell line has not yet been evaluated. In this study, we explored the anticancer activity of CFEZO against… More >

Abstract NFBD1, a signal amplifier of the p53 pathway, is vital for protecting cells from p53-mediated apoptosis and the early phase of DNA damage response under normal culture conditions. Here we investigated its expression in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and we describe the biological functions of the NFBD1 gene. We found that NFBD1 mRNA and protein were more highly expressed in NPC tissues than in nontumorous tissues. To investigate the function of NFBD1, we created NFBD1-depleted NPC cell lines that exhibited decreased cellular proliferation and colony formation, an increase in their rate of apoptosis, and More >

Preimplantation embryotoxicity after mouse embryo exposition to reactive oxygen species

    ELISA CEBRAL1,2, ISABEL CARRASCO1 , DAVID VANTMAN1, ROSITA SMITH1

    BIOCELL, Vol.31, No.1, pp. 51-59, 2007, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2007.31.051

Abstract Exposure of either gametes or embryos to conditions and/or factors that generate oxidative stress has been associated with impaired early embryogenesis. The effects of reactive oxygen species (ROS) on mouse preimplantation development, depending of the ROS-concentration and time of exposition, were studied. Two-cell embryos were incubated with 5, 10, 25 and 50 μM of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) for 30 and 60 minutes of exposition and allowed to develop for 72 h to study the quality of development. The incubation with 50 μM H2O2 for 30 or 60 minutes, strongly inhibited the 2-cell embryo development as compared… More >

Brief Note: Reactive oxygen species in bovine embryo in vitro production

    G.C. DALVIT, P.D. CETICA, L.N. PINTOS, M.T. BECONI

    BIOCELL, Vol.29, No.2, pp. 209-212, 2005, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2005.29.209

Abstract Oxidative modifications of cell components due to the action of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the most potentially damaging processes for proper cell function. However, in the last few years it has been observed that ROS participate in physiological processes. The aim of this work was to determine ROS generation during in vitro production of bovine embryos. Cumulus-oocyte complexes were recovered by aspiration of antral follicles from ovaries obtained from slaughtered cows and cultured in medium 199 for 22 h at 39ºC in 5% CO2: 95% humidified air. In vitro fertilization was carried out in… More >
