Abstract Recently, addition of various natural fibers to high strength concrete has aroused great interest in the field of building materials. This is because natural fibers are much cheaper and locally available, as compare to synthetic fibers. Keeping in view, this current research conducted mainly focuses on the static properties of hybridized (sisal/coir), sisal and coir fiber-reinforced concrete. Two types of natural fibers sisal and coir were used in the experiment with different lengths of 10, 20 and 30 mm and various natural fiber concentrations of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 1.5% by mass of cement, to investigate… More > Graphic Abstract

    Yantai Zhang1,*, Yongan Shi2, Baoyin Sun3, Zheng Wang4

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.130, No.1, pp. 73-96, 2022, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2022.016857 - 29 November 2021

Abstract Based on the multiple stripes analysis method, an investigation of the estimation of aleatory randomness by Sa(T1)-based intensity measures (IMs) in the fragility analysis is carried out for two typical low- and medium-rise reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures with 4 and 8 stories, respectively. The sensitivity of the aleatory randomness estimated in fragility curves to various Sa(T1)-based IMs is analyzed at three damage limit states, i.e., immediate occupancy, life safety, and collapse prevention. In addition, the effect of characterization methods of bidirectional ground motion intensity on the record-to-record variability is investigated. It is found that the… More >

The Measurement of the Local Slip in Bamboo-Reinforced Concrete Beams Using Moment-Curvature and Bond-Stress

    Muhtar*

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.9, No.9, pp. 1631-1646, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jrm.2021.015452 - 23 April 2021

Abstract This paper presents a method of measuring local slip in bamboo-reinforced concrete beams. Local slips (so) are calculated by reducing the elongation of the bamboo reinforcement (ebo) with the elongation of the concrete (eco). The elongation of bamboo reinforcement (ebo) is determined in two ways, namely, read directly through a straingauge mounted on the bamboo reinforcement and calculated based on the force analysis or curvature moment as a control. The elongation of the concrete (eco) is calculated using force analysis or curvature moment. The process of calculating curvature moments and bond stress employs the Excel program. The steps… More > Graphic Abstract

Peridynamic Modeling and Simulation of Fracture Process in Fiber-Reinforced Concrete

    Zhuang Chen1, Xihua Chu1,2,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.127, No.1, pp. 241-272, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2021.015120 - 30 March 2021

Abstract In this study, a peridynamic fiber-reinforced concrete model is developed based on the bond-based peridynamic model with rotation effect (BBPDR). The fibers are modelled by a semi-discrete method and distributed with random locations and angles in the concrete specimen, since the fiber content is low, and its scale is smaller than the concrete matrix. The interactions between fibers and concrete matrix are investigated by the improvement of the bond’s strength and stiffness. Also, the frictional effect between the fibers and the concrete matrix is considered, which is divided into static friction and slip friction. To More >

A Multi-objective Invasive Weed Optimization Method for Segmentation of Distress Images

    Eslam Mohammed Abdelkader1,2,*, Osama Moselhi3, Mohamed Marzouk4, Tarek Zayed5

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.26, No.4, pp. 643-661, 2020, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2020.010100

Abstract Image segmentation is one of the fundamental stages in computer vision applications. Several meta-heuristics have been applied to solve the segmentation problems by extending the Otsu and entropy functions. However, no single-objective function can optimally handle the diversity of information in images besides the multimodality issues of gray-level images. This paper presents a self-adaptive multi-objective optimization-based method for the detection of crack images in reinforced concrete bridges. The proposed method combines the flexibility of information theory functions in addition to the invasive weed optimization algorithm for bi-level thresholding. The capabilities of the proposed method are More >

Experimental Study on Fatigue Performance of Reinforced Concrete Beams in Corrosive Environment with Cyclic Loads

    Hui Wang1,2, Shiqin He1,*, Xiaoqiang Yin3, Zeyang Cao1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 95-108, 2020, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2020.06595 - 23 June 2020

Abstract In marine environments, reinforced concrete bridge structures are subjected to cyclic loads and chloride ingress, which results in corrosion of the reinforcing bars, early deterioration, durability loss, and a considerable reduction in the fatigue strength. Owing to the complexity of the problem and the difficulty of testing, there are few studies on the fatigue performance of concrete structures under the combined action of corrosion environment and cyclic load. Therefore, a coupling test device for corrosion and cyclic load is designed and fatigue tests of reinforced concrete beams in air environments and chlorine salt corrosive environments… More >

Seismic Vulnerability Analysis of Single-Story Reinforced Concrete Industrial Buildings with Seismic Fortification

    Jieping Liu1, Lingxin Zhang1,*, Haohao Zhang2, Tao Liu1

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.13, No.2, pp. 123-142, 2019, DOI:10.32604/sdhm.2019.04486

Abstract As there is a lack of earthquake damage data for factory buildings with seismic fortifications in China, seismic vulnerability analysis was performed by numerical simulation in this paper. The earthquake-structure analysis model was developed with considering the influence of uncertainties of the ground motion and structural model parameters. The small-size sampling was conducted based on the Latin hypercube sampling and orthogonal design methods. Using nonlinear analysis, the seismic vulnerability curves and damage probability matrix with various seismic fortification intensities (SFI) were obtained. The seismic capacity of the factory building was then evaluated. The results showed… More >

Mohammad Reza Salami1,*, Ebrahim Afsar Dizaj2, Mohammad Mehdi Kashani3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.120, No.3, pp. 677-691, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.05666

Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the dynamic performance of rectangular and circular reinforced concrete (RC) columns considering biaxial multiple excitations. For this purpose, an advanced nonlinear finite element model which can simulate various features of cyclic degradation in material and structural components is used. The implemented nonlinear fiber beam-column model accounts for inelastic buckling and low-cycle fatigue degradation of longitudinal reinforcement and can simulate multiple failure modes of RC columns under dynamic loading. Hypothetical rectangular and circular columns are used to investigate the failure modes of RC columns. A detailed ground motion More >

    Mohammed A. Mohammed1, Andre R. Barbosa1,*

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.120, No.3, pp. 583-627, 2019, DOI:10.32604/cmes.2019.06052

Abstract A three-dimensional nonlinear modeling strategy for simulating the seismic response of slender reinforced concrete structural walls with different cross-sectional shapes is presented in this paper. A combination of nonlinear multi-layer shell elements and displacement-based beam-column elements are used to model the unconfined and confined parts of the walls, respectively. A uniaxial material model for reinforcing steel bars that includes buckling and low-cyclic fatigue effects is used to model the longitudinal steel bars within the structural walls. The material model parameters related to the buckling length are defined based on an analytical expression for reinforcing steel More >
