    Strength Failure Conditions of the Various Structural Materials: Is there some Common Basis existing?

    Abstract The paper deals with the application of phenomenological, invariant-based strength conditions (fracture failure) and their interrelationships. The conditions have been generated and are just applied here for a variety of materials. These might possess a dense or a porous consistency, and belong to brittle and ductile behaving isotropic materials, brittle unidirectional laminae and brittle woven fabrics. The derivation of the conditions was based on the author's so-called Failure Mode Concept (FMC) which basically builds up on the hypotheses of Beltrami and Mohr-Coulomb.

    Abstract Although insects lack the adaptive immune response of the mammalians, they manifest effective innate immune responses, which include both cellular and humoral components. Cellular responses are mediated by hemocytes, and humoral responses include the activation of proteolytic cascades that initiate many events, including NO production. In mammals, nitric oxide synthases (NOSs) are also present in the endothelium, the brain, the adrenal glands, and the platelets.     Abstract The results of 2D simulation of strain localizations on the meso-level in the surface layer of a polycrystal with a highly pronounced Portevin Le Chatelier (PLC) effect are presented. For such a purpose the Relaxation Element Method (REM) has been used. A fundamental property of solid "plastic deformation is accompanied by stress relaxation in local volumes of a loaded solid" lies on the basis of this method. The elaborated REM model operates on the principle of cellular automata. The results are in good qualitative agreement with known experimental data. More >

    Abstract The Meshless Local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) Method is applied to solve large deformation problems of elasto-plastic materials. In order to avoid re-computation of the shape functions, the supports of MLS approximation functions cover the same sets of nodes during the deformation; fundamental variables are represented in spatial configuration, while the numerical quadrature is conducted in the material configuration; the derivation of shape function to spatial coordinate is pushed back to material coordinate by tensor transformation.     Abstract A numerical implementation of the Somigliana identity in displacements for the solution of 3D elastic problems in exponentially graded isotropic solids is presented. An expression for the fundamental solution in displacements, Ujl, was deduced by Martin et al. (Proc. R. Soc. Lond. A, 458, pp. 1931--1947, 2002). This expression was recently corrected and implemented in a Galerkin indirect 3D BEM code by Criado et al. (Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng., 2008).     Abstract Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite causing Chagas disease, contains a number of proteolytic enzymes. The recent completion of the genome sequence of the T. cruzi CL Brener clone suggests the presence of 70 cysteine peptidases, 40 serine peptidases (none of them from the chymotrypsin family), about 250 metallopeptidases (most leishmanolysin homologues), 25 threonine peptidases, and only two aspartyl peptidases, none of them from the pepsin family.     Abstract Spermatocytes from the two armadillo species, C. villosus and D. hybridus were studied in microspreads for synaptonemal complexes (SCs) and in thin sections for electron microscopy (EM). The complete SC karyotype generally agrees with previous reports on mitotic chromosomes, except for the sex chromosomes. The X chromosome is submetacentric in both species and the Y is the shortest one in C. villosus and the second shortest in D. hybridus, and an extremely acrocentric one.     Visualization of the ribosomal DNA (45S rDNA) of Indica rice with FISH on some phases of cell cycle and extended DNA fibers

    Abstract The ribosomal DNA (45S rDNA) behaviors during the cell cycle were analyzed on interphase nuclei, prophases, metaphases, pachytene chromosomes and extended DNA fibers in rice (Oryza,sativa ssp.indica cv.Guangluai No.4) by using high-resolution fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH). The results show that 45S rDNA is located at the ends of short arms of chromosomes 9 and 10. But the signals are much more intense on chromosome 9 than on chromosome 10 in metaphase.
