PREDICTION OF BINARY MIXTURE BOILING HEAT TRANSFER IN SYSTEMS WITH STRONG MARANGONI EFFECTS

Kenneth M. Armijo, Van P. Carey*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.2, pp. 1-6, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.2.3003

Abstract This paper investigates the impact of Marangoni phenomena for low concentrations of 2-propanol/water and methanol/water mixtures. In real systems the addition of small levels of surface-active contaminants can affect the surface tension of the liquid-vapor interface and thermodynamic conditions in this region. Analysis was performed for three widely accepted binary mixture correlations to predict heat flux and superheat values for subatmospheric experimental data using bulk fluid and film thermodynamic properties. Due to the non-ideal nature of these alcohol/water mixtures, this study also employs an average pseudo single-component (PSC) coefficient in place of an ideal heat transfer coefficient (HTC) to improve… More >

AERATION OF COMPOST HEATING SYSTEM USING MAGNETIC FIELD

    Harumi Toriyama*, Yutaka Asako

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-6, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.1.3005

Abstract Effects of a magnetic field on aeration through porous medium compost have been investigated numerically. Some composts yield heat over 60 degrees Celsius in fermentation process. That exothermic reaction produces a considerable amount of heat, which could be a potential heating source. Fermentation reaction requires aeration, sufficient supply of paramagnetic oxygen gas and exhaust of metabolized diamagnetic carbon dioxide gas. Continuous and forced air supply is more efficient rather than conventional manual turns or stirrings as aeration means. In magnetoaero-dynamics, the magnetizing force acting on a paramagnetic oxygen gas is applied for the enhancement of airflow, heat and mass transfer.… More >

SYSTEMATIC STRATEGY FOR MODELING AND OPTIMIZATION OF THERMAL SYSTEMS WITH DESIGN UNCERTAINTIES

Po Ting Lin, Hae Chang Gea, Yogesh Jaluria*

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.1, No.1, pp. 1-20, 2010, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v1.1.3003

Abstract Thermal systems play significant roles in the engineering practice and our lives. To improve those thermal systems, it is necessary to model and optimize the design and the operating conditions. More importantly, the design uncertainties should be considered because the failures of the thermal systems may be very dangerous and produce large loss. This review paper focuses on a systematic strategy of modeling and optimizing of the thermal systems with the considerations of the design uncertainties. To demonstrate the proposed strategy, one of the complicated thermal systems, Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), is simulated, parametrically modeled, and optimized. The operating conditions,… More >

    Jean-Pierre Chery1, Marie Gradeler1, Vincent Bonnal2,3,4

    Revue Internationale de Géomatique, Vol.31, No.2, pp. 355-376, 2022, DOI:10.3166/RIG.31.355-376© 2022

Abstract The need to enhance and share generic and original information from different research projects, led to the design of a dedicated geoweb, called NAMO. Its design uses open and free functionalities that demonstrate their flexibility in an agile and iterative approach. It is in particular the development of two dimensions of valorization and positioning in geoweb 2.0 that is highlighted: narrative mapping and systemic modeling. The use of geographic information, in particular in co-construction and open science approaches, can thus be better equipped.

    Oncology Research, Vol.32, No.4, pp. 769-784, 2024, DOI:10.32604/or.2023.044276

Abstract Bone metastasis secondary to breast cancer negatively impacts patient quality of life and survival. The treatment of bone metastases is challenging since many anticancer drugs are not effectively delivered to the bone to exert a therapeutic effect. To improve the treatment efficacy, we developed Pluronic P123 (P123)-based polymeric micelles dually decorated with alendronate (ALN) and cancer-specific phage protein DMPGTVLP (DP-8) for targeted drug delivery to breast cancer bone metastases. Doxorubicin (DOX) was selected as the anticancer drug and was encapsulated into the hydrophobic core of the micelles with a high drug loading capacity (3.44%). The DOX-loaded polymeric micelles were spherical,… More > Graphic Abstract

    H.E. Dillon, A.F. Emery, A.M. Mescher, O. Sprenger, S.R. Edwards

    Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 1-14, 2011, DOI:10.5098/hmt.v2.2.3002

Abstract The stability of free convection in an annulus is governed by the boundary conditions on the inner and outer walls of the annulus and the upper and lower boundaries. This paper explores the effect of free convection on the inner surface of the annulus, where the boundary conditions for the outer wall and the upper and lower boundaries are controlled. The temperature is measured in the center of the air cavity and just below the surface of the inner annular boundary. Experimental results are shown for a radius ratio of 0.40, aspect ratio of 20.7. These more recent experimental results… More >
