    Abstract Results of residual stress measurements on Inconel 718 turbine components after machining are here presented. The work is focused on the experimental detection of the residual stress state produced after turning (orthogonal cutting and standard) and milling. The aim of the experimental activity was to supply an experimental data base of proved reliability for milling and turning model validation.     Crystallite Size Distribution Determination By X-Ray Diffraction

    Abstract X-ray diffraction is a useful technique for the estimation of size distributions of smaller crystallites. With the constant improvement of experimental techniques, especially with the advent of new-generation synchrotron and neutron sources with superior resolution, these size distributions can be precisely determined. Furthermore, modern methods for the analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns, such as Rietveld refinement, increasingly go beyond the determination of structural parameters and include refinable parameters for a physical crystallite size distribution.

    Statistics of High Purity Nickel Microstructure From High Energy X-ray Diffraction Microscopy

    Abstract We have measured and reconstructed via forward modeling a small volume of microstructure of high purity, well annealed nickel using high energy x-ray diffraction microscopy (HEDM). Statistical distributions characterizing grain orientations, intra-granular misorientations, and nearest neighbor grain misorientations are extracted. Results are consistent with recent electron backscatter diffraction measurements. Peaks in the grain neighbor misorientation angle distribution at 60 degrees (∑3) and 39 degrees (∑9) have resolution limited widths of ≈ 0.14 degree FWHM.     Abstract Graphite materials are widely used in gas-cooled nuclear reactors as both moderators and reflectors. The graphite properties change when the microstructure damage occurs due to the in-core radiation and oxidation, thereby having a strong impact on the service life of graphite.
