    Anas Basalamah1, Shadikur Rahman2,*

    Computer Systems Science and Engineering, Vol.40, No.1, pp. 375-388, 2022, DOI:10.32604/csse.2022.016949

Abstract This paper demonstrates empirical research on using convolutional neural networks (CNN) of deep learning techniques to classify X-rays of COVID-19 patients versus normal patients by feature extraction. Feature extraction is one of the most significant phases for classifying medical X-rays radiography that requires inclusive domain knowledge. In this study, CNN architectures such as VGG-16, VGG-19, RestNet50, RestNet18 are compared, and an optimized model for feature extraction in X-ray images from various domains involving several classes is proposed. An X-ray radiography classifier with TensorFlow GPU is created executing CNN architectures and our proposed optimized model for classifying COVID-19 (Negative or Positive).… More >

Sajib Sarker, Ling Tan*, Wenjie Ma, Shanshan Rong, Osibo Benjamin Kwapong, Oscar Famous Darteh

    Journal on Internet of Things, Vol.3, No.2, pp. 39-51, 2021, DOI:10.32604/jiot.2021.014877

Abstract The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) rapidly spreading around the world and turns into a pandemic situation, consequently, detecting the coronavirus (COVID-19) affected patients are now the most critical task for medical specialists. The deficiency of medical testing kits leading to huge complexity in detecting COVID-19 patients worldwide, resulting in the number of infected cases is expanding. Therefore, a significant study is necessary about detecting COVID-19 patients using an automated diagnosis method, which hinders the spreading of coronavirus. In this paper, the study suggests a Deep Convolutional Neural Network-based multi-classification framework (COVMCNet) using eight different pre-trained architectures such as VGG16, VGG19,… More >

    Munif Alotaibi1,*, Bandar Alotaibi2

    Intelligent Automation & Soft Computing, Vol.29, No.3, pp. 885-898, 2021, DOI:10.32604/iasc.2021.018350

Abstract The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is one of a large family of viruses that cause illness, the symptoms of which range from a common cold, fever, coughing, and shortness of breath to more severe symptoms. The virus rapidly and easily spreads from infected people to others through close contact in the absence of protection. Early detection of COVID-19 assists governmental authorities and healthcare specialists in reducing the chain of transmission and flattening the curve of the pandemic. The widespread form of the COVID-19 diagnostic test lacks a high true positive rate and a low false negative rate and needs a… More >

VGG-CovidNet: Bi-Branched Dilated Convolutional Neural Network for Chest X-Ray-Based COVID-19 Predictions

    Muhammed Binsawad1,*, Marwan Albahar2, Abdullah Bin Sawad1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.68, No.2, pp. 2791-2806, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.016141

Abstract The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a devastating impact on the health and welfare of the global population. A key measure to combat COVID-19 has been the effective screening of infected patients. A vital screening process is the chest radiograph. Initial studies have shown irregularities in the chest radiographs of COVID-19 patients. The use of the chest X-ray (CXR), a leading diagnostic technique, has been encouraged and driven by several ongoing projects to combat this disease because of its historical effectiveness in providing clinical insights on lung diseases. This study introduces a dilated bi-branched convoluted neural network (CNN)… More >

Real-Time Anomaly Detection in Packaged Food X-Ray Images Using Supervised Learning

    Kangjik Kim1, Hyunbin Kim1, Junchul Chun1, Mingoo Kang2, Min Hong3,*, Byungseok Min4

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.67, No.2, pp. 2547-2568, 2021, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2021.014642

Abstract Physical contamination of food occurs when it comes into contact with foreign objects. Foreign objects can be introduced to food at any time during food delivery and packaging and can cause serious concerns such as broken teeth or choking. Therefore, a preventive method that can detect and remove foreign objects in advance is required. Several studies have attempted to detect defective products using deep learning networks. Because it is difficult to obtain foreign object-containing food data from industry, most studies on industrial anomaly detection have used unsupervised learning methods. This paper proposes a new method for real-time anomaly detection in… More >

Abstract Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic outbreak has devastating effects on daily lives and healthcare systems worldwide. This newly recognized virus is highly transmissible, and no clinically approved vaccine or antiviral medicine is currently available. Early diagnosis of infected patients through effective screening is needed to control the rapid spread of this virus. Chest radiography imaging is an effective diagnosis tool for COVID-19 virus and follow-up. Here, a novel hybrid multimodal deep learning system for identifying COVID-19 virus in chest X-ray (CX-R) images is developed and termed as the COVID-DeepNet system to aid expert radiologists in rapid and accurate image interpretation. First, Contrast-Limited… More >

Abstract The quick spread of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) infection around the world considered a real danger for global health. The biological structure and symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other viral chest maladies, which makes it challenging and a big issue to improve approaches for efficient identification of COVID-19 disease. In this study, an automatic prediction of COVID-19 identification is proposed to automatically discriminate between healthy and COVID-19 infected subjects in X-ray images using two successful moderns are traditional machine learning methods (e.g., artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), linear kernel and radial basis function (RBF), k-nearest neighbor… More >

Abstract Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an extremely infectious disease and possibly causes acute respiratory distress or in severe cases may lead to death. There has already been some research in dealing with coronavirus using machine learning algorithms, but few have presented a truly comprehensive view. In this research, we show how convolutional neural network (CNN) can be useful to detect COVID-19 using chest X-ray images. We leverage the CNN-based pre-trained models as feature extractors to substantiate transfer learning and add our own classifier in detecting COVID-19. In this regard, we evaluate performance of five different pre-trained models with fine-tuning the weights… More >

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.62, No.2, pp. 591-605, 2020, DOI:10.32604/cmc.2020.08580

Abstract Chronological age estimation using panoramic dental X-ray images is an essential task in forensic sciences. Various statistical approaches have proposed by considering the teeth and mandible. However, building automated dental age estimation based on machine learning techniques needs more research efforts. In this paper, an automated dental age estimation is proposed using transfer learning. In the proposed approach, features are extracted using two deep neural networks namely, AlexNet and ResNet. Several classifiers are proposed to perform the classification task including decision tree, k-nearest neighbor, linear discriminant, and support vector machine. The proposed approach is evaluated using a number of suitable… More >
