A Three-Point BVP of Time-Dependent Inverse Heat Source Problems and Solving by a TSLGSM

    Weichung Yeih1,2, Chein-Shan Liu3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.2, pp. 107-128, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.107

Abstract We consider an inverse problem for estimating an unknown time dependent heat source H(t) in a heat conduction equation ut(x,t) = uxx(x,t) + H(t). First this inverse problem is formulated as a three-point boundary value problem (BVP) for ODEs discretized from the transformed homogeneous governing equation. To treat this three-point BVP we develop a two-stage Lie-group shooting method (TSLGSM). The novel approach is examined through numerical examples to convince that it is rather accurate and efficient; the estimation error is small even for identifying discontinuous and oscillatory heat sources under noise. A Numerical Method for Estimating the Maximal Temperature Gradients Reached in Fire-Damaged Concrete Structures Based on the Parameter Identification

    Dong Wei1, Yinghua Liu1,2, Zhihai Xiang1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 77-106, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.077

Abstract Taking advantage of the parameter identification, a new numerical method is developed in this paper to estimate the maximal temperature gradients reached in fire-damaged concrete structures. This method can avoid the hypotheses of temperature-time curve and fire duration usually made in conventional numerical methods, availably evaluate the depth and degree of fire damage of concrete structures and consider the effects of localized fire. A material model taking into account the properties of fire-damaged concrete is firstly proposed in the present research. The least-squares estimation and the Gauss-Newton method are used to identify the material parameters… More >

Tracking Features in Image Sequences with Kalman Filtering, Global Optimization, Mahalanobis Distance and a Management Model

    Raquel R. Pinho1, João Manuel R. S. Tavares1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 51-76, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.051

Abstract This work addresses the problem of tracking feature points along image sequences. In order to analyze the undergoing movement, an approach based on the Kalman filtering technique has been used, which basically carries out the estimation and correction of the features' movement in every image frame. So as to integrate the measurements obtained from each image into the Kalman filter, a data optimization process has been adopted to achieve the best global correspondence set. The proposed criterion minimizes the cost of global matching, which is based on the Mahalanobis distance. A management model is employed More >

A Computational Approach for Pre-Shaping Voltage Commands of Torsional Micromirrors

    T. Starling1, M. F. Daqaq1, G. Li1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.45, No.3, pp. 207-226, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.045.207

Abstract Input-shaping is an open-loop control technique for dynamic control of electrostatic MEMS. In MEMS applications, open-loop control is attractive as it computes a priori the required system input to achieve desired dynamic behavior without using feedback. In this work, a 3-D computational electromechanical analysis is performed to preshape the voltage commands applied to electrostatically actuate a torsional micromirror to a desired tilt angle with minimal residual oscillations. The effect of higher vibration modes on the controlled response is also investigated. It is shown that, for some structural design parameters, the first bending mode of the More >

Matching Contours in Images through the use of Curvature, Distance to Centroid and Global Optimization with Order-Preserving Constraint

    Francisco P. M. Oliveira1, João Manuel R. S. Tavares1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.43, No.1, pp. 91-110, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.043.091

Abstract This paper presents a new methodology to establish the best global match of objects' contours in images. The first step is the extraction of the sets of ordered points that define the objects' contours. Then, by using the curvature value and its distance to the corresponded centroid for each point, an affinity matrix is built. This matrix contains information of the cost for all possible matches between the two sets of ordered points. Then, to determine the desired one-to-one global matching, an assignment algorithm based on dynamic programming is used. This algorithm establishes the global More >

Micromechanical analysis of aligned and randomly oriented whisker-/ short fiber-reinforced composites

    S.H. Pyo1, H.K. Lee1,2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.40, No.3, pp. 271-306, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.040.271

Abstract This paper presents a micromechanical approach for predicting the elastic and multi-level damage response of aligned and randomly oriented whisker-/ short fiber-reinforced composites. Based on a combination of Eshelby's micromechanics and the evolutionary imperfect interface approach, the effective elastic moduli of the composites are derived explicitly. The modified Eshelby's tensor for spheroidal inclusions with slightly weakened interface [Qu (1993b)] is extended in the present study to model whiskers or short fibers having mild or severe imperfect interfaces. Aligned and random orientations of spheroidal reinforcements are considered. A multi-level damage model in accordance with the Weibull's More >

Nonlinear Micro Circular Plate Analysis Using Hybrid Differential Transformation / Finite Difference Method

    Cha’o-Kuang Chen1,2, Hsin-Yi Lai1, Chin-Chia Liu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.40, No.2, pp. 155-174, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.040.155

Abstract Electrostatically-actuated micro circular plates are used in many micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) devices nowadays such as micro pumps and optical switches. However, the dynamic behavior of these circular plates is not easily analyzed using traditional analytic methods due to the complexity of the interactions between the electrostatic coupling effects. Accordingly, this study develops an efficient computational scheme in which the nonlinear governing equation of the coupled electrostatic force acting on the micro circular plate is solved using a hybrid differential transformation / finite difference approximation method. In deriving the dynamic equation of motion of the micro… More >

Applications of the Phase-Coded Generalized Hough Transform to Feature Detection, Analysis, and Segmentation of Digital Microstructures

    Stephen R. Niezgoda1, Surya R. Kalidindi1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 79-98, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.014.079

Abstract The generalized Hough transform is a common technique for feature detection in image processing. In this paper, we develop a size invariant Hough framework for the detection of arbitrary shapes in three dimensional digital microstructure datasets. The Hough transform is efficiently implemented via kernel convolution with complex Hough filters, where shape is captured in the magnitude of the filter and scale in the complex phase. In this paper, we further generalize the concept of a Hough filter by encoding other parameters of interest (e.g. orientation of plate or fiber constituents) in the complex phase, broadening More >

    Yeau-Ren Jeng1,Ping-Chi Tsai1,Guo-Zhe Huang1, I-Ling Chang1

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 109-126, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.109

Abstract This study performs a series of Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Molecular Statics (MS) simulations to investigate the mechanical properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) under a uniaxial tensile strain. The simulations focus specifically on the effects of the nanotube helicity, the nanotube diameter and the percentage of vacancy defects on the bond length, bond angle and tensile strength of zigzag and armchair SWCNTs. In this study, a good agreement is observed between the MD and MS simulation results for the stress-strain response of the SWCNTs in both the elastic and the plastic deformation regimes. The… More >

Analytical Full-field Solutions of a Piezoelectric Layered Half-plane Subjected to Generalized Loadings

    Chien-Ching Ma1,2, Wen-Cha Wu2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.11, No.2, pp. 79-108, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2009.011.079

Abstract The two-dimensional problem of a planar transversely isotropic piezoelectric layered half-plane subjected to generalized line forces and edge dislocations in the layer is analyzed by using the Fourier-transform method and the series expansion technique. The full-field solutions for displacements, stresses, electrical displacements and electric fields are expressed in explicit closed forms. The complete solutions consist only of the simplest solutions for an infinite piezoelectric medium with applied loadings. It is shown in this study that the physical meaning of this solution is the image method. The explicit solutions include Green's function for originally applied loadings… More >
