TWO DIFFERENT APPROACHES FOR ANALYSING HEAT TRANSFER IN A POWER-LAW FLUID FLOW BETWEEN PARALLEL PLATES

    Fábio A. Caldasa,*, Paulo M. Coelhob,†

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.8, pp. 1-8, 2017, DOI:10.5098/hmt.8.32

Abstract In this paper, Nusselt numbers for a power-law fluid in a fully developed laminar flow between parallel plates with constant, and different, wall heat fluxes in the presence of dissipation effects are presented. The Nusselt numbers values were obtained following two different approaches. One is the “classical” approach, based on a single bulk temperature, and this approach is used in this work to obtain for the first time generic analytical expressions for Nusselt numbers. In the new approach, different bulk temperatures are used for each Nu′ determination, one bulk temperature for each side of the More >

    Alamelu Manghai T.M.1, Jegadeeshwaran R2, Sugumaran V.3

    Structural Durability & Health Monitoring, Vol.11, No.1, pp. 43-67, 2017, DOI:10.3970/sdhm.2017.012.043

Abstract Diagnosis is the recognition of the nature and cause of a certain phenomenon. It is generally used to determine cause and effect of a problem. Machine fault diagnosis is a field of finding faults arising in machines. To identify the most probable faults leading to failure, many methods are used for data collection, including vibration monitoring, thermal imaging, oil particle analysis, etc. Then these data are processed using methods like spectral analysis, wavelet analysis, wavelet transform, short-term Fourier transform, high-resolution spectral analysis, waveform analysis, etc., The results of this analysis are used in a root More >

    Nishant Patel1, Jason Woo1, Michael A. Liss1, Kerrin L. Palazzi1, J. Michael Randall2, Reza Mehrazin3, Ramzi Jabaji1, Hossein S. Mirheydar1, Kyle Gillis1, Hak J. Lee1, Anthony L. Patterson3, Christopher J. Kane1, Frederick Millard2, Ithaar H. Derweesh1

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.23, No.2, pp. 8227-8233, 2016

Abstract Introduction: To compare surgical complications and tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI)-toxicities in patients who underwent primary cytoreductive nephrectomy (CN) followed by adjuvant TKI therapy versus those who underwent neoadjuvant TKI therapy prior to planned CN for metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC).
Materials and methods: Two-center retrospective analysis. Sixty-one mRCC patients underwent TKI therapy with sunitinib between July 2007 to January 2014. Patients were divided into three groups: primary CN followed by adjuvant TKI (n = 27, Group 1), neoadjuvant TKI prior to CN (n = 21, Group 2), and primary TKI alone (no surgery, n = 13, Group… More >

    MEETING REVIEW

Risks, benefits, and approaches to hormonal blockade in prostate cancer
Highlights from the European Association of Urology Meeting, March 20-24, 2015, Madrid, Spain

    Jack Barkin

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.22, No.3, pp. 7847-7852, 2015

Abstract Several abstracts presented at the 2015 European Association of Urology Meeting highlighted new developments in hormone therapy for prostate cancer management. One abstract described how the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH)/gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist leuprolide, but not the LHRH/GnRH antagonist degarelix, induced plaque instability in a mouse model. A second abstract showed that in patients with a history of severe cardiovascular disease, degarelix was associated with fewer cardiovascular events than treatment with an LHRH agonist. A third abstract showed how primary androgen-deprivation therapy was linked with increased all-cause mortality in a US registry. A fourth abstract More >

Mathematical Programming Approaches for Interval Structural Behaviour and Stability Analysis

    Di Wu1, Wei Gao1,2, Chongmin Song1, Zhen Luo3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.108, No.5, pp. 331-373, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.108.331

Abstract Two novel mathematical programming approaches are proposed to separately assess non-deterministic behaviour and stability of engineering structures against disparate uncertainties. Within the proposed computational schemes, uncertainties attributed by the material properties, loading regimes, as well as environmental influences are simultaneously incorporated and modelled by the interval approach. The proposed mathematical programming approaches proficiently transform the uncertain structural analyses into deterministic mathematical programs. Two essential aspects of structural analysis, namely linear structural behaviour and bifurcation buckling, have been explicitly investigated. Diverse verifications have been implemented to justify the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed approaches More >

Assessment of Cell-centered and Cell-vertex Finite Volume Approaches for Computation of 2D Structural Dynamics on Arbitrary Quadrilateral Grids

    Kazem Hejranfar1, Mohammad-Hadi Azampour1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.106, No.6, pp. 395-439, 2015, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2015.106.395

Abstract In this study, cell-centered (CC) and cell-vertex (CV) finite volume (FV) approaches are applied and assessed for the simulation of two-dimensional structural dynamics on arbitrary quadrilateral grids. For the calculation of boundary nodes’ displacement in the CC FV approach, three methods are employed. The first method is a simple linear regression of displacement of boundary nodes from the displacement of interior cell centers. In the second method, an extrapolation technique is applied for this purpose and, in the third method; the line boundary cell technique is incorporated into the solution algorithm in an explicit manner.… More >

Imaging approaches with advanced prostate cancer: techniques and timing

David Leung, Saravanan Krishnamoorthy, Lawrence Schwartz, Chaitanya Divgi

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.21, Suppl.2, pp. 42-47, 2014

Abstract instruction: Introduction: In conjunction with biomarkers, imaging is an important component of the diagnostic workup and subsequent management of men with prostate cancer.
instruction: Materials and methods: The relevant literature was retrieved from a search of MEDLINE with appropriate keywords.
instruction: Results: Osseous metastases develop in close to 90% of patients with metastatic prostate cancer, thus making bone scans (single photon, using Tc-99m labeled phosphonates) the mainstay of imaging in advanced prostate cancer. Bone scans are limited by their lack of specificity and an unclear relationship between bone scan changes and disease progression or response to therapy. In… More >

Traditional androgen ablation approaches to advanced prostate cancer: new insights

Kyle O. Rove, E. David Crawford

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.21, Suppl.2, pp. 14-21, 2014

Abstract instruction: Introduction: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is a mature therapy for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, and yet despite many years of use, there is still much about its use, side effects, efficacy, and outcomes for which the urology community does not have answers.
instruction: Materials and methods: A literature search was performed to review ADT use in the modern era, specifically examining adjuvant ADT after primary therapy, continuous versus intermittent ADT, disadvantages of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists versus newer LHRH antagonists, and controversies of combined androgen blockade.
instruction: Results: ADT has little role as primary… More >

Singular Boundary Method: Three Regularization Approaches and Exterior Wave Applications

    Zhuo-Jia Fu1, Wen Chen1,2, Jeng-Tzong Chen3, Wen-Zhen Qu1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.99, No.5, pp. 417-443, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.099.417

Abstract This study investigates the singular boundary method (SBM) with three regularization approaches for solving 2D and 3D exterior wave problems. The singular boundary method is a recent meshless boundary collocation method, which introduces the concept of source intensity factors to eliminate the singularity of the fundamental solutions. Recently, three approaches, the inverse interpolation technique (IIT), the semi-analytical technique with boundary IIT (SAT1) and the semi-analytical technique with integral mean value (SAT2), have been proposed to determine the source intensity factors for removing the singularities of Helmholtz fundamental solutions at origin. This study compares numerical accuracy… More >

Elucidating functional context within microarray data by integrated transcription factor-focused gene-interaction and regulatory network analysis

    Thomas Werner1,2, Susan M. Dombrowski3,4, Carlos Zgheib5, Fouad A. Zouein5, Henry L. Keen6, Mazen Kurdi5,7, George W. Booz5

    European Cytokine Network, Vol.24, No.2, pp. 75-90, 2013, DOI:10.1684/ecn.2013.0336

Abstract Microarrays do not yield direct evidence for functional connections between genes. However, transcription factors (TFs) and their binding sites (TFBSs) in promoters are important for inducing and coordinating changes in RNA levels, and thus represent the first layer of functional interaction. Similar to genes, TFs act only in context, which is why a TF/TFBS-based promoter analysis of genes needs to be done in the form of gene(TF)-gene networks, not individual TFs or TFBSs. In addition, integration of the literature and various databases (e.g. GO, MeSH, etc) allows the adding of genes relevant for the functional… More >
