Antioxidant capacity of vitamin C in mouse liver and kidney tissues

ALICIA WEYERS, LAURA I. UGNIA, HUGO GARCÍA OVANDO, NORA B. GORLA*

    BIOCELL, Vol.32, No.1, pp. 27-31, 2008, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2008.32.027

Abstract In the present study, the antioxidant capacity of vitamin C was examined in the liver and the kidney tissues of mice with or without ciprofloxacin (CFX) treatment. The antioxidant capacity of the vitamin was evaluated in terms of lipid hydroperoxides (LOOH) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs). The experimental design was 15 days of water (control and CFX groups) or vitamin C (vitamin C and vitamin C plus CFX groups) in drinking water. One dose of CFX was injected, 15 minutes before sacrifice, in the corresponding mice.
The initial nmol of lipid hydroperoxides/g of tissue… More >

Application of System Dynamics in Analysis of Carrying Capacity of Water Resources in Yiwu City of China

    L. H. Feng1, J. H. Feng1

The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.5, No.1, pp. 15-20, 2008, DOI:10.3970/icces.2008.005.015

Abstract The primary scheme of unilaterally pursuing fast economic development at the expense of the environment and the secondary scheme focusing on environmental protection as the primary goal by slowing economic development are both undesirable for Yiwu. The third scheme balancing economic development with environmental protection is the most effective scheme. More >

Highly Accurate Computation of Spatial-Dependent Heat Conductivity and Heat Capacity in Inverse Thermal Problem

    Chein-Shan Liu1, Li-Wei Liu2, Hong-Ki Hong2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.17, No.1, pp. 1-18, 2007, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2007.017.001

Abstract In this paper we are concerned with the parameters identification of the inverse heat conduction problems governed by linear parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs). It is the first time that one can construct a closed-form estimation method for the inverse thermal problems of estimating the spatial-dependent thermophysical parameters. The key points hinge on an establishment of a one-step group preserving scheme (GPS) for the semi-discretization of PDEs, as well as a closed-form solution of the resulting algebraic equations. The new method, namely the Lie-group estimation method, has four advantages: it does not require any prior More >

A lattice-based cell model for calculating thermal capacity and expansion of single wall carbon nanotubes

    Xianwu Ling1, S.N. Atluri

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.14, No.2, pp. 91-100, 2006, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2006.014.091

Abstract In this paper, a lattice-based cell model is proposed for single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). The finite temperature effect is accounted for via the local harmonic approach. The equilibrium SWNT configurations are obtained by minimizing the Helmholtz free energy with respect to seven primary coordinate variables that are subjected to a chirality constraint. The calculated specific heats agree well with the experimental data, and at low temperature depend on the tube radii with small tubes having much lower values. Our calculated coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) are universally positive for all the radial, axial and More >

An Anisotropic Damage Model for the Evaluation of Load Carrying Capacity of Composite Artificial Ligaments

    P. Vena1, R. Contro

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.4, No.3&4, pp. 497-506, 2003, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2003.004.497

Abstract The adoption of artificial ligaments in current surgery is still characterised by a low success rate due to the fact that mechanical properties of the biomedical devices are such that a biomechanical compatibility is not fully satisfied. A durable artificial ligament should exhibit stiffness as well as strength properties which are such that a full articulation functionality is guaranteed. To this purpose, reliable numerical methods able to predict the mechanical behaviour of such devices both in the elastic and in inelastic range until complete rupture, could be used for designing of devices with tailored mechanical More >
