Negotiable Fate Belief and Suicidal Ideation among Left-Behind Children: The Mediating Role of Coping Self-Efficacy and Gender Differences

    Xiao Hu1,#, Biao Li2,#, Jun Qin2,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.27, No.8, pp. 1203-1220, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2025.066297 - 29 August 2025

Abstract Objectives: Suicidal ideation is a strong predictor of suicide deaths, which refers to the consideration or desire to give up one’s own life. Left-behind children in rural China are more vulnerable to psychological problems and suicidal ideation compared to their non-left-behind peers. The aim of the current study was to examine two potential protective factors, negotiable fate belief and coping self-efficacy, and to test the mediating role of coping self-efficacy in the relationship between negotiable fate belief and suicidal ideation. We also analyzed gender differences in this mediation model. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted… More >

    Journal of Psychology in Africa, Vol.35, No.4, pp. 535-540, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jpa.2025.070124 - 17 August 2025

Abstract The study investigated the effects of monetary rewards and punishments on the behavioral inhibition in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) tendencies. The present study adopted the signal stopping task paradigm, with 66 children with ADHD tendencies as the research subjects. A mixed design of 2 (reward and punishment type: reward, punishment) × 2 (stimulus type: monetary stimulus, social stimulus) was used. The analysis applied a between intervention group (with reward and punishment type variables) and within type of reward approach (by stimulus type as intra subject variables). The results showed that monetary punishment More >

Abstract This study investigated the relationship between parental cognitive ability and child logical reasoning ability, and the role of academic expectation and family environment in that relationship. Based on the 2020 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) data, 1491 children (girls ratio = 53.78%; average grade = 6.023 years, school grade standard deviation = 1.825 years). Results following multiple regression model (OLS) show that the higher the parental cognitive ability, the higher the children’s logical reasoning ability. Secondly, parental academic expectation serves as a mediator between their cognitive ability and children’s logical reasoning ability for higher logical More >

    Xia Hu1, Zhu Li2, Yawen Shi1, Xiaopei Xing1,*

    Journal of Psychology in Africa, Vol.35, No.4, pp. 471-480, 2025, DOI:10.32604/jpa.2025.070062 - 17 August 2025

Abstract This longitudinal study examined the association between parental autonomy support and school-aged children’s adjustment across four major domains of school functioning, as well as the mediating role of children’s executive function. Participants were 476 school-aged children (girl: 49.2%, Mage = 10.49 years, SD = 1.32 years), who completed the Psychological Autonomy Support Scale, the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function–2, and the Primary School Students’ Psychological Suzhi Scale at baseline and at two subsequent follow-up assessments. Results from unconditional latent growth curve models and structural equation modeling indicated that paternal autonomy support was a significant predictor… More >

Pilot Study of a School-Based Parenting Intervention: Prevention of Emotional and Behavioral Problems among Chinese Children

Jin Peng, Jiabei He*, Na Li*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.27, No.7, pp. 953-977, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2025.066405 - 31 July 2025

Abstract Background: Parenting exerts a profound influence on children’s mental health and behavioral development. Despite the high prevalence of children’s emotional and behavioral problems (CEBP) in China, evidence-based parenting interventions remain scarcely investigated as preventive public health strategies. This pilot study evaluated a school-based intervention for preventing CEBP. Methods: We employed a quasi-experimental design with propensity score matching (PSM) to select 28 families (intervention: n = 13; control: n = 15) from two matched urban primary schools. Quantitative data from seven validated scales were analyzed using t-tests and ANCOVA. Qualitative insights were derived from 10 semi-structured interviews… More >

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.20, No.3, pp. 347-355, 2025, DOI:10.32604/chd.2025.065354 - 11 July 2025

Abstract Background: Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare congenital anomalous coronary artery origin disorder. Objective: We sought to summarize the clinical experience and prognostic characteristics of surgical treatment of ALCAPA. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical information on patients who had ALCAPA and underwent surgery at our center from February 2016 to October 2023. Results: This comparative study of 23 ALCAPA patients (9 infants <1 year; 14 children >1 year) demonstrated significant age-dependent outcomes. Infant patients exhibited markedly prolonged mechanical ventilation (183 ± 105.6 vs. 48.5 ± 62.2 min, p =… More >

The Relationship between Parental Phubbing and Problem Behaviors in Preschool Children

    Qiulan Gu1,2, Mei Zhao1,2,*

    International Journal of Mental Health Promotion, Vol.27, No.5, pp. 607-623, 2025, DOI:10.32604/ijmhp.2025.062796 - 05 June 2025

Abstract Objectives: With the widespread adoption of smartphones, parental phubbing behaviors have become increasingly prevalent, potentially affecting preschool children’s development. Current research primarily focuses on adolescent populations, while the mechanisms through which parental phubbing and authoritarian parenting style influence preschool children’s behavioral problems within the Chinese cultural context remain to be explored. Our investigation seeks to examine the factors contributing to behavioral difficulties among children of preschool age and provide theoretical guidance for prevention. Methods: In our research, we utilized a convenience sampling approach to collect data from parents whose children (n = 612) were between… More >
