Abstract Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the one of most common gynecological malignant tumors with high mortality. A series of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been validated to play a vital role in EOC tumorigenesis. Colon cancer-associated transcript 2 (CCAT2) has been verified as an oncogenic lncRNA in multiple tumors; however, the role of CCAT2 in EOC genesis is still unclear. The purpose of the present study was to probe the function of CCAT2 on EOC. Preliminary experiments found that CCAT2 expression was significantly upregulated in EOC tissues and cell lines compared to noncancerous tissue and More >

The 745.5 issue in code-based, adult congenital heart disease population studies: Relevance to current and future ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM studies

    Fred H. Rodriguez III1,2,3,4, Georges Ephrem1,2, Jennifer F. Gerardin1,2, Cheryl Raskind-Hood5, Carol Hogue5, Wendy Book1,2

    Congenital Heart Disease, Vol.13, No.1, pp. 59-64, 2018, DOI:10.1111/chd.12563

Abstract Objective: Although the ICD-9-CM code 745.5 is widely used to indicate the presence of a secundum atrial septal defect (ASD), it is also used for patent foramen ovale (PFO) which is a normal variant and for “rule-out” congenital heart disease (CHD). The ICD-10-CM code Q21.1 perpetuates this issue. The objective of this study was to assess whether code 745.5 in isolation or in combination with unspecified CHD codes 746.9 or 746.89 miscodes for CHD, and if true CHD positives decrease with age.
Design: Echocardiograms of patients with an ICD-9-CM code of 745.5 in isolation or in combination… More >

Feature Relationships Learning Incorporated Age Estimation Assisted by Cumulative Attribute Encoding

    Qing Tian1,2,3,*, Meng Cao1,2, Tinghuai Ma1,2

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.56, No.3, pp. 467-482, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.02197

Abstract The research of human facial age estimation (AE) has attracted increasing attention for its wide applications. Up to date, a number of models have been constructed or employed to perform AE. Although the goal of AE can be achieved by either classification or regression, the latter based methods generally yield more promising results because the continuity and gradualness of human aging can naturally be preserved in age regression. However, the neighbor-similarity and ordinality of age labels are not taken into account yet. To overcome this issue, the cumulative attribute (CA) coding was introduced. Although such More >

Reversible Natural Language Watermarking Using Synonym Substitution and Arithmetic Coding

    Lingyun Xiang1,2, Yan Li2, Wei Hao3,*, Peng Yang4, Xiaobo Shen5

    CMC-Computers, Materials & Continua, Vol.55, No.3, pp. 541-559, 2018, DOI:10.3970/cmc.2018.03510

Abstract For protecting the copyright of a text and recovering its original content harmlessly, this paper proposes a novel reversible natural language watermarking method that combines arithmetic coding and synonym substitution operations. By analyzing relative frequencies of synonymous words, synonyms employed for carrying payload are quantized into an unbalanced and redundant binary sequence. The quantized binary sequence is compressed by adaptive binary arithmetic coding losslessly to provide a spare for accommodating additional data. Then, the compressed data appended with the watermark are embedded into the cover text via synonym substitutions in an invertible manner. On the More >

Abstract Glioma, with varying malignancy grades and histological subtypes, is the most common primary brain tumor in adults. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are non-protein-coding transcripts and have been proven to play an important role in tumorigenesis. Our study aims to elucidate the combined effect of lncRNA maternally expressed gene 3 (MEG3) and microRNA-19a (miR-19a) in human glioma U87 and U251 cell lines. Real-time PCR revealed that MEG3 was downregulated and miR-19a was upregulated in malignant glioma tissues and cell lines. Bioinformatics analyses (TargetScan, miRanda, and starBase V2.0) showed that phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) is a… More >

    Ya-Li Gao*1, Zi-Shen Zhao†1, Ming-Yun Zhang*, Li-Jie Han*, Yu-Jin Dong, Bo Xu

    Oncology Research, Vol.25, No.8, pp. 1391-1398, 2017, DOI:10.3727/096504017X14881559833562

Abstract Emerging evidence suggests that the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (PVT1) gene is involved in the pathogenesis of cervical cancer. However, the potential mechanism is rarely reported. Our study found that PVT1 was upregulated in cervical cancer tissue and cell lines. After transfecting PVT1 siRNA, the proliferation, migration, and invasion of cervical cancer cells were markedly decreased. miRNA expression profiles demonstrate that miR-424 was markedly downregulated in cervical cancer tissue. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that miR-424 was potentially targeted by PVT1, which was confirmed by dual-luciferase reporter assay. Pearson’s correlation analysis showed that More >
