Abstract There are little data on the efficacy and safety of taxane/platinum with definitive radiotherapy (RT) for esophageal/GEJ cancer. This article is a retrospective analysis of patients who received weekly paclitaxel 50 mg/ m2 and carboplatin AUC 2 with radical definitive RT for locally advanced esophageal/GEJ cancer. Between February 2011 and July 2014, 179 patients were included. The median age was 54 years. Ninety-two percent of patients had squamous histology. Mean RT dose was 58.7 Gy in 32 fractions over 53 days, with mean of six chemotherapy cycles. Fifty-six percent of patients developed ³grade 3 acute… More >

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.21, No.3, pp. 7283-7289, 2014

Abstract Introduction: To evaluate the ability of endorectal coil (e-coil) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to identify early prostatic fossa recurrence after radical prostatectomy.
Materials and methods: We identified 187 patients from 2005–2011 who underwent e-coil MRI with dynamic gadolinium-contrast enhancement followed by transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided prostatic fossa biopsy for possible local prostate cancer recurrence. For analysis, local recurrence was defined as a negative evaluation for distant metastatic disease with a positive prostatic fossa biopsy, decreased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) following salvage radiation therapy, or increased lesion size on serial imaging.
Results: Local recurrence was identified in 132 patients, with… More >

EXPERIMENTS ON HEAT TRANSFER CHARACTERISTICS OF SHEARDRIVEN LIQUID FILM IN CO-CURRENT GAS FLOW

Tomoki Hirokawaa,*, Masahiko Murozonoa, Oleg Kabovb,c, Haruhiko Ohtaa

Frontiers in Heat and Mass Transfer, Vol.5, pp. 1-8, 2014, DOI:10.5098/hmt.5.17

Abstract Experiments are performed to study the liquid film behavior and corresponding local heat transfer to shear-driven liquid film flow of water in the cocurrent nitrogen gas flow. The heated channel has a cross section of 30mm in width and 5mm in height, where the bottom is operated as a heating surface of 30mm in width and 100mm in length. The heated section is divided into segments to evaluate the local heat transfer coefficients. Under most gas Reynolds numbers, the local heat transfer coefficients are increased with increasing heat flux, where three mechanisms are important; (i) More >

    Fengwei Xie1,*, Paul Luckman1, John Milne1, Lachlan McDonald1, Conor Young1, Chen Yang Tu1, Teo Di Pasquale1, Reinhard Faveere1, Peter J. Halley1,2

    Journal of Renewable Materials, Vol.2, No.2, pp. 95-106, 2014, DOI:10.7569/JRM.2014.634104

Abstract Starch is a biopolymer that is widely available from agriculture/nature and thus is renewable and cheap. In addition, starch-based materials are biodegradable, offering a great advantage over traditional nonbiodegradable synthetic polymers. However, the poor processibility and product performance of starch have greatly impeded the wide application of starch in real applications. This paper reviews the current developments of the production of thermoplastic starch as a commodity renewable material. The biological origins of the feedstock, formulation development, processing requirements, as well as the important aspects that need to be addressed when designing a product from starch More >

Voxel-based Analysis of Electrostatic Fields in Virtual-human Model Duke using Indirect Boundary Element Method with Fast Multipole Method

    S. Hamada1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.102, No.5, pp. 407-424, 2014, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2014.102.407

Abstract The voxel-based indirect boundary element method (IBEM) combined with the Laplace-kernel fast multipole method (FMM) is capable of analyzing relatively large-scale problems. A typical application of the IBEM is the electric field analysis in virtual-human models such as the model called Duke provided by the foundation for research on information technologies in society (IT’IS Foundation). An important property of voxel-version Duke models is that they have various voxel sizes but the same structural feature. This property is useful for examining the O(N) and O(D2) dependencies of the calculation times and the amount of memory required by More >

Lactobacillus for preventing recurrent urinary tract infections in women: meta-analysis

    Peter M. Grin1,2, Paulina M. Kowalewska3, Waleed Alhazzani1, Alison E. Fox-Robichaud1,2

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.20, No.1, pp. 6607-6614, 2013

Abstract Introduction: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common infections affecting women, and often recur. Lactobacillus probiotics could potentially replace low dose, long term antibiotics as a safer prophylactic for recurrent UTI (rUTI). This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to compile the results of existing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) to determine the efficacy of probiotic Lactobacillus species in preventing rUTI.
Materials and methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched from inception to July 2012 for RCTs using a Lactobacillus prophylactic against rUTI in premenopausal adult women. A random-effects model meta-analysis was performed using a pooled risk ratio,… More >
