Discrete Constitutive Equations over Hexahedral Grids for Eddy-current Problems

    L. Codecasa1, R. Specogna2, F. Trevisan3

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.31, No.3, pp. 129-144, 2008, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2008.031.129

Abstract In the paper we introduce a methodology to construct discrete constitutive matrices relating magnetic fluxes with magneto motive forces (reluctance matrix) and electro motive forces with currents (conductance matrix) needed for discretizing eddy current problems over hexahedral primal grids by means of the Finite Integration Technique (FIT) and the Cell Method (CM). We prove that, unlike the mass matrices of Finite Elements, the proposed matrices ensure both the stability and the consistency of the discrete equations introduced in FIT and CM. More >

Current management of small renal masses

Michelle L. Ramírez, Christopher P. Evans

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.14, Suppl.6, pp. 39-47, 2007

Abstract The incidence of small renal masses (< 4 cm) is increasing due to the widespread use of imaging studies. Many of these incidental lesions may remain asymptomatic or in fact be benign, and recent insight into their natural course has contributed to modifications in management. With improvements in biopsy technique and minimally invasive technologies, appropriate diagnosis and treatment of these masses are further being evaluated. Other contemporary approaches, including surveillance, laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, enucleation, ablative procedures, and high-intensity focused ultrasound, are weighed against open nephron-sparing surgery, the current gold standard for treatment. Here, we review More >

Single-channel response of hamster oocytes to fertilization with homologous spermatozoa

LEONOR M.E. ITUARTE*, TERESA B. VIERA*, TEOBALDO A. SALDEÑA*, JUAN C. DE ROSAS**, MABEL FÓSCOLO**, JORGE E. IBÁÑEZ*, FERNANDO D. SARAVÍ*

    BIOCELL, Vol.30, No.1, pp. 43-49, 2006, DOI:10.32604/biocell.2006.30.043

Abstract Electrophysiological events occur early after fertilization, along with changes in intracellular Ca2+ concentration . Passive electrical parameters were determined in golden hamster oocytes by whole cell patch-clamp method. In separate experiments the effect of 4-aminopyridine on resting oocytes was tested. The single-channel patch clamp configuration was employed to assess the electrical response to fertilization with homologous sperm. Structure of oocytes submitted to patch clamp was evaluated with scanning electron microscopy and found to be preserved.
Oocyte diameter was 70.2 ± 2.2 µm; their resting parameters were: membrane potential 23.8 ± 0.8 mV; total membrane specific… More >

    Penile cancer: current challenges

    Woei Yun Siow, Christopher Cheng

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, Suppl.1, pp. 18-23, 2005

Abstract Penile cancer remains a formidable challenge in many developing countries because of its high incidence and the advanced disease stage at diagnosis.
For early penile cancer, surgery alone offers a high cure rate. Penile sparing therapies are proposed as alternative treatment options for select patients with the added advantages of preservation of body image and improved quality of life.
The optimal management of lymph node disease remains controversial. The role of the sentinel lymph node biopsy, lymphatic mapping, prophylactic lymphadenectomy and the template for lymph node dissection are discussed.
For advanced, metastatic penile cancer, more effectiveand less More >

Defining high-risk prostate cancer: current status

    Neil Fleshner

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, Suppl.1, pp. 14-17, 2005

Abstract Defining men at high risk for prostate cancer treatment failure and death continues to evolve. Identifying these men allows for better disease prognostication, patient decision treatment making and facilitates accrual for appropriate clinical trials. Men at traditional high risk for prostate cancer progression and death include men with advanced clinical stage, higher levels of PSA and Gleason pattern 4. Utilizing accepted methods of risk stratification including nomograms can aid in case identification. Softer risk factors such as obesity, race, socioeconomic status, and genetic polymorphisms are increasingly being studied. Ultimately high-throughput genomics will aid in identification More >

Current status of treatment for patients with metastatic prostate cancer

    Celestia S. Higano

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.12, Suppl.3, pp. 38-41, 2005

Abstract Introduction: Men with advanced prostate cancer now have many treatment options which include first and second-line hormonal therapy, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, (either directed external beam or systemic radio-isotope), and investigational agents on protocols. Additional adjunctive therapy with the bisphosphonate, zoledronic acid, to reduce skeletal complications should be considered.
Discussion: This review will discuss appropriate timing of many of these options and summarize the randomized trials demonstrating survival benefit for docetaxel and decreased skeletal morbidity for zoledronic acid.
Conclusion: The clinical trials conducted to date do not address the question of when to give chemotherapy in the course of More >

    CASE REPORT

An unusual case of concurrent breast and prostate cancer

Tony Choon Seng Woo, Richard Choo, Sarat Chander

    Canadian Journal of Urology, Vol.11, No.5, pp. 2390-2392, 2004

Abstract Breast and prostate cancer occurring concurrently is a rare occurrence. However, the recent literature has reported that there is an increased incidence of male breast cancer in prostate cancer patients. The authors describe the case of a man who presented with breast cancer, which was preceded by prostate cancer. There are some common features in terms of the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of these two tumors which are discussed. More >
