The International Conference on Computational & Experimental Engineering and Sciences, Vol.12, No.3, pp. 75-82, 2009, DOI:10.3970/icces.2009.012.075

Abstract Stay cables are some of the most critical structural components of a bridge. However, stay cables readily suffer from corrosion damage and stress corrosion damage. Thus, health monitoring of stay cables is important for ensuring the integrity and safety of a bridge. Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer Optical Fibre Bragg Grating (GFRP-OFBG) cable, a kind of fibre Bragg grating optical sensing technology-based smart stay cables, is proposed in this study. The fabrication procedure of the smart stay cable was developed and the self-sensing property of the smart stay cable was calibrated. The application of the smart More >

Xueying Huang*, Chun Yang, Chun Yuan, Fei Liu, Gador Canton, Jie Zheng§, Pamela K. Woodard§, Gregorio A. Sicard, Dalin Tang||

    Molecular & Cellular Biomechanics, Vol.6, No.2, pp. 121-134, 2009, DOI:10.3970/mcb.2009.006.121

Abstract Image-based computational models for atherosclerotic plaques have been developed to perform mechanical analysis to quantify critical flow and stress/strain conditions related to plaque rupture which often leads directly to heart attack or stroke. An important modeling issue is how to determine zero stress state from in vivo plaque geometries. This paper presents a method to quantify human carotid artery axial and inner circumferential shrinkages by using patient-specific ex vivo and in vivo MRI images. A shrink-stretch process based on patient-specific in vivo plaque morphology and shrinkage data was introduced to shrink the in vivo geometry first to find the zero-stress… More >

    G.S. Li1, D. Yao2, Y.Z. Wang3, H.Y. Jiang2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.51, No.1, pp. 53-72, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.051.053

Abstract In this paper, an undisturbed soil-column infiltrating experiment is investigated, and a mathematical model describing multi-components solutes transport behaviors in the column is put forward by combing hydro-chemical analysis with advection dispersion mechanisms, which is a group of advection-dispersion-reaction partial differential equations. Since the model involving six reaction coefficients which can not be obtained directly, an optimal perturbation regularization algorithm of determining these parameters is performed, and numerical simulations under different conditions are carried out. Furthermore, the inversion algorithm is applied to solve the real inverse problem by utilizing the measured breakthrough data. The reconstruction More >

Tracking Features in Image Sequences with Kalman Filtering, Global Optimization, Mahalanobis Distance and a Management Model

    Raquel R. Pinho1, João Manuel R. S. Tavares1

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.46, No.1, pp. 51-76, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.046.051

Abstract This work addresses the problem of tracking feature points along image sequences. In order to analyze the undergoing movement, an approach based on the Kalman filtering technique has been used, which basically carries out the estimation and correction of the features' movement in every image frame. So as to integrate the measurements obtained from each image into the Kalman filter, a data optimization process has been adopted to achieve the best global correspondence set. The proposed criterion minimizes the cost of global matching, which is based on the Mahalanobis distance. A management model is employed More >

A Highly Accurate Technique for Interpolations Using Very High-Order Polynomials, and Its Applications to Some Ill-Posed Linear Problems

    Chein-Shan Liu1, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.43, No.3, pp. 253-276, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.043.253

Abstract Since the works of Newton and Lagrange, interpolation had been a mature technique in the numerical mathematics. Among the many interpolation methods, global or piecewise, the polynomial interpolation p(x) = a0 + a1x + ... + anxn expanded by the monomials is the simplest one, which is easy to handle mathematically. For higher accuracy, one always attempts to use a higher-order polynomial as an interpolant. But, Runge gave a counterexample, demonstrating that the polynomial interpolation problem may be ill-posed. Very high-order polynomial interpolation is very hard to realize by numerical computations. In this paper we propose a… More >

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.42, No.2, pp. 131-150, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.042.131

Abstract This paper describes a comprehensive and high-fidelity finite element meshing approach for patient-specific arterial geometries from medical imaging data, with emphasis on cerebral aneurysm configurations. The meshes contain both the blood volume and solid arterial wall, and are compatible at the fluid-solid interface. There are four main stages for this meshing method: 1) Image segmentation and geometric model construction; 2) Tetrahedral mesh generation for the fluid volume using the octree-based method; 3) Mesh quality improvement stage, in which edge-contraction, pillowing, optimization, geometric flow smoothing, and mesh cutting are applied to the fluid mesh; and 4) More >

A Fictitious Time Integration Method for the Numerical Solution of the Fredholm Integral Equation and for Numerical Differentiation of Noisy Data, and Its Relation to the Filter Theory

    Chein-Shan Liu1, Satya N. Atluri2

    CMES-Computer Modeling in Engineering & Sciences, Vol.41, No.3, pp. 243-262, 2009, DOI:10.3970/cmes.2009.041.243

Abstract The Fictitious Time Integration Method (FTIM) previously developed by Liu and Atluri (2008a) is employed here to solve a system of ill-posed linear algebraic equations, which may result from the discretization of a first-kind linear Fredholm integral equation. We rationalize the mathematical foundation of the FTIM by relating it to the well-known filter theory. For the linear ordinary differential equations which are obtained through the FTIM (and which are equivalently used in FTIM to solve the ill-posed linear algebraic equations), we find that the fictitous time plays the role of a regularization parameter, and its More >
